had a rough first impression, the gunplay was horrendous, I had no idea why some shots connected and some didn't. the game also crashed so frequently I was quicksaving every few minutes as well as every time before entering/exiting an area. I probably wouldn't have continued playing it in it's base state a friend suggested for me to get just the stability patches from the community created "viva new vegas" modpack, which instantly fixed all of my issues with the game. the ♥♥♥♥ gunplay was largely because the base game's iron sights are misaligned, which this mod fixed. it also adds the option to enable weapons to fire while transitioning from hipfire to aiming down sights, which makes things feel much less clunky without completely overhauling things too much. the extremely frequent crashing went from multiple per play session to maybe one crash every few days of playing with these fixes in place, wow what a game this is. you really can roleplay as whatever character archetype you want and the game will respond in kind, it treats some of your smallest choices with so much respect. actions you take within your first few hours of playing will shape the rest of your playthrough and/or will get some kind of acknowledgement by major characters even 50 hours in. you can play the whole game without using vats at all and just clicking heads with a bolt action rifle in the heat of combat as I've mostly done, or sneak around and stealth kill your way through the game and play in an entirely different manner I've finished the base game and have just finished the first DLC with 62 hours played, all I can think of is how much more stuff there still is to experience on a replay when factoring in how many character builds you can create from starting stat points and traits, faction alignments, your character's morality and how you handle the seemingly endless number of quests that each have multiple ways of solving them that all end up saying something about your character it's no wonder this game is up there with the best of all time, I finally get it now lol
One of the best open world RPGs to ever be made, might as well review it after 1k hours. :D Modding it is easy simply look up Gopher on youtube for his modding guides or follow one of the many modding guides on Nexus. The story is amazing and the DLC is some of the best story telling in gaming. DLC's in ranked order just the story ones and not gra/cs. Dead Money, it's a challenging DLC for new players but once you know what to build into you can kinda just beat it in like 4 hours give or take. Look at my dead money review for more info. Old World Blues, I do love old world blues but I'll be honest after 1k hours I do tend to skip the 40 min long talk at the start since I mainly do the dlc for the perks and player home, it's still a fun romp and has some of the best weapons in the game. Look at OWBs review for more info. Lonesome Road, a fantastic final DLC for the game. Not a day goes by that I don't wish Ulysses was a base game companions but the amount of voice acting he was going to have was to much for the xbox 360 and ps3 lol. If you want more info on LR look at my review of it. Honest hearts, you might think with me putting this one at the lowest that it's the worse dlc in the game, it's not it's just rather short and I wish it lasted longer, theirs fantastic story telling in the terminals of this dlc I highly recommend looking up Randle Clark on youtube to see his full story. The Burn Man is one one of the best written characters in the whole game. Just wish their was a proper evil side of the dlc where you side with Legion but it's good no matter, plus .45 auto pistols are so good and the Tomi guns are peak. I don't really want to say much about the story of game for those who haven't played it yet so from here on I might spoil some stuff so you have been warned. The companions in this game have so much charm. ED-E: A flying Eyebot you find him in Primm he might see like a simple Eyebot but they probably have the most content related to them. Arcade Gannon: A doctor for the followers of the apocalypse, his family might of not been the best but he's making up for it with working with the FotA, just note he doesn't like the Legion but he gives some of the best armor in the game, just wish you got to keep him after his companion quest. Craig Boone: An ex first recon sniper in the NCR, he might seem to have a stone wall personality and he does but if you get to know him you know he's a man with so much guilt and hatred for himself as well as the legion. Also if you have him as your companion be prepped for across the map kill cams as he just sniped a fly in the capital wasteland from the top of his dino, also make sure to give him a dinky toy, he's found in you guessed it a big t-rex. :D Rose of Sharon Cassidy, aka Cass: Cass is a drunk found at the ncr outpost, look for the big statues of the NCR Ranger and Dessert Ranger shaking hands. You won't be able to get Cass until you work a bit for the Crimson Caravan Company. She really likes Whisky, I'll be honest I don't know much about Cass as I don't think I've ever had her as a full time companion as I don't tend to use them. Raul Tejada: Raul is a mechanic located at the top of black mountain, he is probably my favorite human companion in the game. Raul is old and by old I mean old, he was born before the great war 234 years old as of the story of the game. He's lost everything his family all but his sister died in a house fire then his sister got gunned down. So he became a gunslinger to get revenge on the people who killed his family, in his old age he feels like he's to old to keep being a Vaquero, it's your choice to get him to pick back up his vaquero outfit and revolver or to become a master mechanic, oh and he's voiced by Danny Trejo so that's neat. Veronica Santangelo: She likes to punch people and is looking for a dress, her story is tied to Dead Money. She's a Brotherhood of Steel Scribe, I've also yet to really do her main line quest but she's fun and really like punching things. found at the 188 trading post look for the girl in robes. Rex aka the King's dog: He's a robotic police dog that has had many owners as of the game his main owner is the King a Elvis impersonator in Freeside, his brain is dying. :c You can find 3 dog brains all of which will give him different stats. He hates hats, Idk what else to say about him he's a dog lol.
i beat the game four times, secured every faction ending, and did it all without viva new vegas, just grinding through crash after crash until my saves were so corrupted the game would quit straight from the main menu. i pushed through every dlc on the last run and now i'm just stuck at my final save, loop-slaughtering the legate via stealth sniping him with a single explosive round or dropping the dinner bell with flechette to turn him into jello. sure, some quests feel monotonous and grindy, but the more you play, the less they feel like a chore. i'll always be installing this over fallout 4, no contest.
I think I put more time into Fallout 4, but that's only because I got hyper fixated on exploring every nook and cranny... However, this is the better game. Great story and atmosphere, good writing - I think it's the best of the franchise. It's neater and less of a time sink than Fallout 4.
The game itself is buggy as hell, and it crashes a lot and very frequently, almost every 20 minutes or so. After researching online a bit, I found out that it is better played when modded. It took a few hours just tinkering and learning on how to mod. For such an old game, there are tons of different tutorials and guides. The community consensus seems to be following the Viva New Vegas steps on modding, but for me I find that Gopher's Modding Guide is the easiest to follow for me. After modding for a bit, the game runs perfectly smooth! Immediately after finishing my first blind playthrough, I find myself hungry for more! My second playthrough added a lot more community contents mods and many other QoL mods, and it simply feels like playing free DLCs! Since I also own Fallout 3 GOTY in my account, learning to mod this game with the Tales of Two Wastelands means I get to replay Fallout 3 with the smooth awesome gameplay of New Vegas's engine! My Score: 9.5/10 (it is awesome when modded well)

This game is amazing. One of the best, and probably the best Fallout game. But it constantly crashes when you try to enter somewhere or just randomly in the middle of play. I have absolutely no clue why this popular game is a POS, but I blame Todd Howard.
Sharp writing, meaningful choices, unforgettable characters, and a world that still feels miles ahead of most RPGs today, even if it probably won’t be as fun to play now unless you mod it first.
Yes, the hype for this game is undeniably real. I started NV back in May and for some reason it didn't click for me but I just came back to it oh my god is it sooo good. The story, gameplay, and the companions is what makes fall out new vegas stick out from all the other fallout games. Safe to say, I'm super hooked and loving this game.
My feelings are a bit mixed on this one. New Vegas isn't exactly the Fallout experience I was looking for but I must admit that, aside from a few parts, I enjoyed a lot playing it. New Vegas is the first 3D Fallout I've ever played and I didn't really know what to expect. I have played the classic Fallout games fairly recently and became a huge fan. Especially blew me away with their world and atmosphere. When I first started New Vegas, I was a bit too prejudiced because I usually drop every Bethesda game I try before making any real progress. So, how did I manage to finish New Vegas? I've asked myself this a few times but honestly, I don't have a real answer. New Vegas feels like playing modded Elder Scrolls game. In other words, it’s not much different from other Bethesda RPGs. I guess the only real answer to my question might just be my love for the Fallout universe. I’ve dragged this part out a bit, so I want to get straight into talking about the game by comparing it to the classic Fallouts. With Fallout 3, the series evolved from an isometric turn based RPG into a 3D open world action RPG. Personally, I don't have a preference between the two styles. Both sides have their own pros/cons and neither outweighs the other for me. Usually, in Bethesda games, if you play a character focused on melee, then combat feels very bland and tedious. I went in with that expectation but I found myself enjoying it way more than I expected. The main reason for this is the limb dismemberment. Shouting out to the Bloody Mess perk I picked up early on and the Protonic Axe I got from the Old World Blues DLC: despite supposedly trying my best to play as a pacifist, I ultimately found myself quick saving and slaughtering the entirety of The Fort, Strip and Hoover Dam. This happens to me a lot in games for some reason. Also, weapons like the Holorifle were also among the guns that I really enjoyed using. Now, I want to address one of my biggest issues with the game: character progression. In the classic Fallout games, you could specialize in at most 4 or 5 skills, unless you went out of your way to grind extra levels. As I usually do, I started with a speech-heavy character but by the time I finished the game, almost all of my skills were completely maxed out. This meant I could easily do whatever I wanted and the game turned into a total power fantasy. Consequently, all resource management and tension completely evaporated. Frankly, I didn't like this at all. Of course, the reason for this might be that I played through the DLCs back to back right at the start of the game. I entered them at level 15 and ended up at level 42. Another criticism I have is that most of the traits and perks are quite uninteresting. Whenever it was time to pick a perk, I just usually ended up just taking an attribute point because none of the options appealed to me. My primary reasons for loving Fallout games have always been the world, the atmosphere, and the absurd characters and stories within them. Here, our story starts just like the first two games with a "go and find the [object]" quest. We are trying to track down the person who attempted to kill us and stole our cargo. Everything is perfectly fine up to this point. In the original Fallouts, after finding the [object], you receive another objective, which is "go and defeat the big bad guy." I expected something similar in New Vegas but they took a different route. You pick a side among several factions/characters and go to war against the rest. While the concept is interesting, unfortunately, these factions and characters just didn't catch my interest. In the first game, Mutant army and The Master, and in the second game, Enclave and Frank Horrigan - their motivations and presence really intrigued me. In New Vegas, however, I couldn't bring myself to care about any of them. Obviously, this is just a personal preference. Others might find this much more engaging but it just wasn't for me. I keep bringing up the atmosphere, so I want to dive into that a bit. Even though New Vegas managed to suck me in with its atmosphere from the very first second, as I said at the beginning of the review, it doesn't quite deliver that authentic Fallout feeling. I think I now fully understand why 3D Fallouts are often called "Oblivion with guns." Music wise, tracks from the classic Fallouts make a return and I have absolutely no complaints about that choice since the Fallout 1 and 2 soundtracks are simply flawless. I won't even bother mentioning how much of a technical disaster the game is because you all probably know that already. If you’ve never played a Fallout game before, I think you'd be better off playing the first two games first. There are massive differences between the classic Fallouts and Bethesda's Fallouts, so I can't really say "if you like this, you'll love that." However, even though New Vegas isn't quite on par with the classics, it's still a good game and I recommend it.
