Old Flash Classic, brought back with a nice fresh coat of paint.

I was so intrigued by the setting of this game series, and remember the list of Submachine games on the various flash game sites I would go through. I could never understand how to progress then. But I'm happy to fully finish this series now. Beautiful art and the feeling when exploring these various areas is incredible. I loved delving deeper and deeper throughout this world.
Mateusz Skutnik is a genius. Nobody does liminal spaces like this
Such wasted potential. TLDR : if you dislike pixel hunting and solutions to puzzles that make no sense within the game world, this game won't be for you. This game started so well, with its beautiful hand drawn graphics, some fairly original puzzles and its incredible world building, but also with the fact that from a very early point you understand that there will be more to it than simply finding the exit to each level, and that one big interconnected puzzle is hidden right there, waiting to tie everything together when you'll revisit the game. So after finding the first ending (and getting to that point was a really pleasant experience overall) I was very eager to tackle that final puzzle. But what a huge disappointment and waste of time that turned out to be... I'm not going to spoil anything but let me just tell you that it relies on several highly questionable design choices, in my opinion. - Firstly, some parts of the solution make no sense at all within the game world because it requires you to navigate between different levels through the main menu by quitting levels and restarting others. This completely broke the otherwise amazing world building for me. - Secondly, the final optional level is such a huge maze of thematically unrelated locations connected through teleporters that it became very tedious to navigate and to remember what was where. Now if it were just for these two points, I would have considered it forgivable and would still have considered the game an overall pleasant, if unequal, experience. - But, unfortunately, the final puzzle also relies on some of the most obnoxious and just plainly anti-fun pixel hunting I've ever seen in a point and click game. Calling it pixel hunting is actually too generous, because in several instances you can't even see what you're looking for on screen, you just have to move your cursor everywhere methodically, hoping to discover an invisible interactable spot. In the end I had to give up and resort to using a guide to know where the last two of them where, and when I found out I was glad I didn't lose any more time on it because the solution was just dumb. This left me with a huge feeling of disappointment, and I genuinely don't understand how could anyone find this kind of "difficulty" fun.
Every few years I would go back and replay the entire flash-game series again, so finding out that this remastered version came out was quite exciting. The atmosphere of Submachine is something special, and it was a great experience as always, although honestly the new Shattered Quadrant post-game was not the best.
Incredible puzzles, spooky music, intriguing lore. It was super satisfying to solve the ultimate puzzle with everything coming together, even if there's so much to have to think about at the same time ! Notes on what is needed where are very useful to make.
it has deep story... ...i don't like story games... ...but this one? damn! 100% recommend! Not giving anyone any spoilers... but it's not easy game.
