Strategic Command: World at War: I tried this game twice in 2023 (Rostov and the Axis High Tide scenarios). I didn't like it after ten hours of playing, so I abandoned it. Fast forward 3+ years to last week, I was feeling disappointed/annoyed with the complexity of Hearts of Iron IV, so I decided to try this game again. The third time as it turns out, is the charm! I get it. This is a really good, fun game. I have been playing it nonstop over the past couple of days and find myself thinking about it when I am not. It is a punishing game in a good way because it makes you examine why you lose units or the flaws in your strategy. For example, I lost BR 1st Airborne to a German counterattack in June '44 and Omar Bradley's HQ was overrun in July outside of Caen. That taught me to bring it when I launch a naval invasion and to not go it alone with airborne troops unless you have a plan to get them support immediately. Frankly after those fiascos, I deserve to be hauled in front of Congress to explain myself. You also learn quickly that you are fighting a comprehensive, world war. I am constantly looking to upgrade my air defenses and send reinforcements forward to the various fronts. I feel like Alfred Thayer Mahan as I agonize over naval chokepoints and shipping lanes in Asia, the North Sea and the Middle East. Escorting convoys from NYC to England across the North Atlantic is terrifying. And I am eagerly awaiting the moment when I can bomb Germany from my northern Italian airbases over the Alps. This kind of strategic warfare is exciting, at least to me. There is more to this game than meets the eye. I really can't believe that I missed it the first two times. Please check it out again, if it didn't click for you the first time or second time. I do not think you will regret it.
Capitulated the USA through losses in the Pacific and Euopean Theaters+occupation of San Fran. in the regular campagin/scenario Didn't even get Hawaii ceded to Japan despite occupying it, also got hit with the oil embargo as Japan and the Pacific/Atlantic security zones and they started drifting towards the allies again. I'm sorry, but it's not that hard to code that into the scenario. That's something that they even have with their WWI game. Now despite inflicting the most humiliating defeat possible on an enemy and forcing them to sign a peace while holding one of the most populous cities on the west coast and sinking their fleet, *nothing* changes and they go back towards war all chip and cheerful? No.
My favorite multiplayer game. The community is helpful and supportive. Easy to find an opponent. The game appears simple but the strategy and tactics are deep. You'll need to invest some time learning the game before you take on an online opponent. The developers have provided years of excellent support. They talk with the gamers, answer questions, and have provided hundreds of gamer requested updates. For free. Where other developers provide updates with expensive DLC, Fury supports all of their games for free. I play Civilization, Sins of a Solar Empire II, Age of Wonders 4, Old World, Dominions. They are all great games. But when I want to play against a human, I choose World at War.
I used to play Avalon Hill Third Reich in the 1970s. This is a more sophisticated resurrection of that game. I'm just learning but so far its very promising
Excellent re-playability and support
Unrealistic AI, even on the lowest difficulty setting. AI is very powerful. Cut off units maintain difficult to destroy, Air units are ineffective in gorund attack, even with bonuses,. Naval units atttacking a ship in port only damage, if you're lucky. The port receives some damage and your attacking ship always does, but the ship in port remains full strength. Naval usits bombarding shore rarel if ever damage units on shore but always receive damage. I do not recomend, don't waste your money unless you like banging your head against the wall to try and get to 1942 from the 1939 game. Different strategies result in prolonged frustration.
Awesome WW2 simulation. You can tailor the game to your needs and skill level. New to the game? They have a novice level. Old hand at turn based strategy games? They have an expert level. Play as either the allies or the axis and customize each games rules to suit your style of gameplay. Hotseat and internet games are available as well if you would rather play another human rather than the computer. Give 5 stars and would recommend all war game and turn game enthusiasts to give this a try.
One of the biggest challenges for any World War II strategy game is capturing the sheer scale and complexity of the conflict while still keeping the experience enjoyable and playable. For me, SCWW2 strikes that balance perfectly. As an older player who grew up with Avalon Hill hex-and-counter board games, this feels like a natural evolution of that classic style. It delivers the same thoughtful, methodical gameplay but adds a remarkable level of depth that genuinely affects how battles unfold. Success isn’t simply about building the biggest army or fielding the strongest weapons. Instead, victory comes from careful planning and understanding the many interconnected systems at play. Assigning the correct HQ to a battle group, monitoring supply lines, and even considering the terrain where combat takes place all have meaningful consequences. Every decision matters. I began my first campaign while off sick from work and ended up clocking more than 90 hours in a single playthrough. Unlike many modern games that can be completed in a few evenings, this is very much a long-term thinking game — one that rewards patience and strategic foresight. I would strongly recommend new players read strategy guides before starting and decide early on what path to victory they want each controlled power to follow. Personally, I take a long time between turns, carefully planning attacks and searching for every possible advantage. Online resources and AI-assisted searches have been invaluable in helping me understand the deeper mechanics, especially how combined arms tactics work together effectively. This is definitely not a “biggest guns win” type of game. Intelligence, preparation, and the ability to outthink the AI are what ultimately determine success — and that’s exactly what makes it so satisfying.
