Stonemachia is an absolute marvel, a stunning game in every aspect. During all the hours I dedicated to it, it never ceased to amaze me. It has become not only one of my all-time favorite games but also my Game of the Year. What makes this work so special? As everything is the sum of its parts, in terms of art—visual, auditory, and narrative—it is simply outstanding. From beginning to end, the designs of the enemies and locations ooze charisma, managing not only to be memorable but also unique in many moments, with some of the most memorable designs I've seen in years. The game uses its inspirations masterfully, combining Italian culture and art history with chess to create something truly original. The music is no less impressive, following the same philosophy, using its diverse inspirations to create not only moving, thematic, emotive, charismatic, and utterly unique pieces, but also surprisingly varied throughout the entire game. And the narrative is surprisingly more solid than it might seem, with a deep and complex lore, a story with diverse and memorable twists, and surprisingly well-crafted character arcs. And of course, let's not forget that it's a game. Mechanically, it remains impressive. Stonemachia offers a frenetic and dynamic experience, with fast and powerful enemies that have narrow attack windows, practically forcing you to parry. You play as Zefiro, a pawn fallen from the heavens who wields the powers of chess to transform into different pieces: the pawn, the bishop, the rook, the knight, and the queen. You're forced to combine them during combat to make the most of their varied catalog of abilities and synergies. It's not only incredibly fun but also a more than adequate challenge, testing not only your speed and precision but also your mastery of these abilities, making it incredibly satisfying to master. Like any work, it has its flaws; it can be repetitive or excessively challenging at times, but these are truly minor details in the overall great experience that Stonemachia offers. An absolutely outstanding game, and highly recommended.
I love the concept and somewhat gameplay but the only thing making it really bad for me is that certain enemies have little to no vision of their attacks so if your a player like me who tries to get as much damage in as possible then walk back you can't because you own character is bigger than the enemy and you can't see them, otherwise it's a great game just wish I could see attacks more clearly.
Stonemachia surprised me, it's a game made by a very small team where you can see the passion and hard work behind it. The combat system is pretty frenetic and customizable enough with the "4" characters available with a different playstyle for each of them. There are more than 20 bosses, each of them unique in their own way, in terms of moveset and design; some bosses are quite hard but still enjoyable, and never feel unfair. The worldbuilding is phenomenal, the italian folklore inspiration is clearly visible in the enemies and in the beautiful environment with astonishing animated skies of the skybox, completed by the soundtrack which is probably my favourite aspect of the game. The only critique I have is regarding the story: in my opinion it feels hard to understand what's happening and to follow everything, it loses the characterization of the world and it makes the overall experience less impactful. If you like fast paced fighting, fantastic worldbuilding, and want to support a small but passionate and capable team, buy the game, it's basically a steal at the current price!
Well.. I have heard about this game about a year and a half ago, and I got really excited because I am a huge fan of soulsbourne games and other games that follow the thematic feel that they have. Something about the visuals stuck with me and it popped up on my socials and on my mind from time to time, and now I can proudly say I 100% completed the game. It is bizzare as it is magnificent, the sky boxes, the music, the world design and the abundant variety of enemies (the card collection is such a great addition!!!) and more and more, I got hooked from the first hour of playing. Stonemachia oozes passion and creativity, it is not afraid from presenting new mechanics and not showing the player any hints, some players can finish the game in 6 hours while others who dig into every nook and cranny (as I did) make it after 19, the secrets are so well hidden I couldn't even be mad after I eventualluy found them. I have only 2 games I have left a review on, Nier: Automata (which I also 100%) and this game, it was truly such a refreshing experience and one that will stick with me for a while. FOR ANYONE WHO HASN'T PICKED THE GAME OUT YET - I IMPLORE YOU TO GIVE IT A CHANCE! Thank you Crossfall Games :)
Great art style and soundtrack
