A very solid game, i was kept engage with the story.. Highly recommend it
Genuinely astonished this game was made with a team as small as it was. What an incredible experience start to finish. There's a slight learning curve, but if you're here you probably already enjoy soulslike games, and it goes without saying that the game does have its moments of jank and bugs- but nothing bad enough that it detracted from my experience. PROS: - If you enjoy an aggressive-defensive playstyle where parrying is king, you will not be disappointed. The combat is both intricate with its piece-swapping system and combinations while also remaining refreshingly simple, especially for a soulslike. - Also someone in another review mentioned the skyboxes and ever since reading that I made a habit of looking up in every single new zone. They're right- the skyboxes in this game are breathtakingly incredible. - The soundtrack. My god the soundtrack. Derasin theme??? And so many adventuring themes or boss themes? Simply amazing. - The monster design in this game is a beautiful hybrid between Bayonetta's Angels, and the gothic body horror that FromSoft is known for. So many of these creatures are just so creative given their inspirations and CrossFall's commitment to the chess/statue/italian renaissance themeing. - Part of the game's charm is knowing the limited resources behind making it. As the game kept going on, I expected it to end relatively soon. And the farther I got, the more blown away I was by how a single-digit team somehow produced this. I'm reviewing this after 33 hours of playing, probably 25-30 of which were of active play. - The story, much like the souls games that inspired this, is told and experienced as an aftermath more so than a present thing. You are left to put pieces together on what is what, and at least for me, i found this a great way to hook me in and get invested. Frankly I'm still confused about some aspects, but the greater narrative still made perfect sense to me. CONS: - The monster designs are extremely ambitious for better, and sometimes worse- Animations in particular suffer (which is tricky when you're trying to parry everything) because the anatomy of some of these creatures are extremely bizarre, and the animations that accompany those do seem a little more on the stiff/floaty/amateurish side. - The game suffers very heavily from "pop-in", where assets would load their higher resolution versions, only when right in your face- so unfortunately this meant getting used to that happening, literally all the time. - The options menu seemed a bit lacking as well, namely the absence of any gamma sliders. Playing this on an OLED TV was a great visual treat, but in the darker areas, it became extremely hard to see at points without closing the blinds. PERSONAL SUGGESTIONS/FEEDBACK: - Many of the boss fights, I found were best suited to the Rook or the Pawn. Knight found its most use for me as a mount for travel, and to make the R2 healing zone, but besides that not much else. - Bishop had its moments but they were few and far between, its parry-mechanic felt like it had potential, but seemed to really miss that anime swordsman feeling. - The ampule/healing orb was a really great twist on the Estus Flask standard that so many souslikes have, and I appreciate that it was a 3D object, but I think I would've preferred it to have been a UI element in the moments where things are very hectic. - I saw the vision for the piece/class upgrades and the swappable combos, but in use, many of them felt like they were fun, but not practical. Many boss fights (especially in the mid-game onwards) don't even give enough time to set anything up, and even when set up correctly, the pay off isn't always there. A few noteworthy examples (like Pawn parrying Bishop disc) however were extremely satisfying. Music: 12/10 Art Direction: 10/10 Combat: 8/10 Story: 8/10 Game Design: 8/10 FINAL SCORE: 9/10 I will be keeping a close eye on CrossFall. Should we ever be so lucky as to get a sequel for this game, I drool at the thought of what something like this would be like with an even larger team or larger budget.
