Starship Traveller (Standalone)

Starship Traveller is another videogame adaptation of the popular Fighting Fantasy book series, which, by the way, are really good to read and play with. And with the videogame you basically do the same thing, except that it tracks your stats and items, draws a map for you and tosses the dices. And that’s my main problem with these adaptations. Doing all that manually is what also makes those books interactive, and in here it gets removed. You’re only left with the choices. This book has a refreshing sci-fi setting, in which you are a captain in charge of a crew and a ship. This adds more complexity, although I personally prefer medieval and classic themes. And the books are also cheap to get, even cheaper than the videogame. This doesn’t mean that this game is bad. It’s more intuitive, but less immersive.

[h1] Star Trek simulator? [/h1] This game is based on Steve Jackson's gamebook and is presented in a very sci-fi way and this shows stark contrast to the other more fantasy & classic gamebooks. It was the first sci-fi gamebook, it was also only the fourth gamebook of the Fighting Fantasy series so the genre was just developing. That's why you shouldn't expect crazy, complicated and super sophisticated things in this adventure. It's not the best sci-fi story nor the best Star Trek special episode but it definitely captured well its spirit. The plot is like Star Trek Voyager (lost far far away from home and need to go back!) and you get plenty of exploration to do on various different planets/star bases and some classic encounters with the usual space anomaly. There's nothing incredible or brand new (especially if reading now in the XXIst century) but it ticks the box for a standard Star Trek episode. It's not easy and you might spend many tries trying to get it right but it's not impossible. It's also very short compared to other gamebooks (so easy to understand/map). There is somehow a way to win without even fighting once (which is crazy if you spent hours making your stats, your ship's stats and even your crew-members' stats!!) The music and the presentation is top notch, it match perfectly the book and really help immerse yourself, this is a big plus since otherwise, it's exactly the same as reading the book (almost as the illustrations are different and it's easier to cheat here). I recommend this game to fans of the original book, those who like it even though it has its shortcoming. It's a bit harder to please non-gamebook fans or people without experience, especially due to the challenge (it's harder than Mass Effect!) but it's probably one of the closest thing to Star Trek that isn't Star Trek! PS: as of early 2024 it's also the only way to play digitally this game as it's not in the Fighting Fantasy Classics game's library currently.

On sale for $1 it's ok. It is a port of the old cyoa books so you have to consider than when reading it. My main complaint is that it seems to be very linear. I went back to try a few other choices and you seem to often end up exactly where you were before or it's a pass/fail situation where in one choice you get the information/item you need, and if you skip it or beam back to the ship you fail at the end. On sale for a $1 I'll give it a positive. BTW devs- there's a bug at the last space station that tells you with a popup that <crew 1> <crew 2> etc is being left behind as code when you pay to enter the station.
