IndieGems Curator
Fight Your Programming
SJ-19 Learns To Love is a pretty solid, short, and simple metroidvania-style game where you take the role of a robot in a series called SJ-units. You are number 19 in a line of robots who have accomplished things for better or worse, and you are tasked to take out a corrupt professor on a planet. As far as a metroidvania goes this is a pretty simple one. There aren't many different types of weapons and powers you can discover. There are save points, quick travel stations, and upgrade pods throughout the 100+ rooms available to explore. You can choose to play on Normal or Easy. There is also an accessibility option that allows you to either hold to fire or fire for each time you hit the button. The dialogue is fun and quirky. The music is fitting to the environment and doesn't overstay the welcome. Get ready to take down frogs, turtles, milkmen, and other interesting enemies throughout the adventure. Aside from the simplicity and casual play, the strongest point of this game has to be the bosses. Overall, the bosses have simple to learn, yet fun to overcome mechanics. They never feel overpowered and can be quickly retried if they defeat you. The controls and movement feel fluid. It's pretty fun to maneuver around enemies as they approach.
The Minor Gripes
This game sets out to create a short boss-focused experience and it does that very well. The quality is pretty good for an indie game, it's just short. It's not a huge issue, but just about my only gripe. It's a fun game and I enjoyed going through it a second time to record footage, but it took a little over an hour my first playthrough. Just a slightly higher price for the amount of time you are expecting to get out of this is all. I do hope to see more from the developer in the future and am interested to check out their previous game that's on Steam as well. The playtime experience and replayability are lacking for the price tag, so I'd recommend waiting for a sale. Either way, it's a solid platformer with cute aesthetics and simple casual play. A fun microvania about a killbot rebelling against his murderous instincts during a mission to send a scientist back to the carbon cycle. He will encounter tea-sipping ex-military, hardcore milk enthusiasts, and a massive (albeit diffident) weeaboo skull on a roughly two-hour journey of self-discovery that's very much worth tagging along for! Have you noticed that it's done up in a candy heart palette to emphasize the theme? That's quite a nice touch, and I didn't even notice till after I'd beaten and closed the game! It's made by the creators of Spooky Ghosts Dot Com, which I also enjoyed and do recommend -- but which I criticized for a dash that was "blinky" rather than "swooshy." Well, get ready to slip the surly bonds of Earth (or whatever this planet is called) and chase the wind, gents! The dash in SJ-19 is full of swoosh, with cartoon motion lines and everything! And it's exactly what I wanted, actually. Did you do that because of me? A fine game indeed with a morning cup of vanilla black tea!
A very cute metroidvania. If you like the graphic style you will probably enjoy it. The story is daft and charming as well. As advertised it has a focus on boss fights. I can't fault it for that as they make that clear on the store page. For me personally I prefer a larger world to explore and fewer boss fights but this was certainly fun either way. I was able to complete it on easy mode as a not too skilled player. The battles can be tricky, so it doesn't feel too easy. A nice way to spend 2-3 hours, fun ending. Good work to the devs for making a small game that does what it sets out to and feels complete.
It's a nice, but somewhat linear metroidvania. Movement feels good, bosses are nice. The only real downside is how short it is. I completed the entire thing in 100 minutes, all achievements, normal difficulty. Also, enable hold to shoot. I feel like it should really be the default.
Loved it. Tons of charm.
This is an enjoyable mini-metroidvania that doesn't occupy you for long but makes the most of that time. You play as a robot tasked with killing some people but across his adventure learns the error of his ways and in the end revolts against his killer-bot programming and saves the people and beings he’s tasked to destroy. The game doesn’t do anything unique or special, at most is the final boss fight where instead of killing your enemies you have to replenish their health bar until it’s filled up. But what the game has is a cute vibe, nice minimalist graphics, and a metroidvania pared down to its core gameplay essentials. This won’t keep you occupied for too long. It has a a couple varied sections with the best probably the sewer system, some neat boss fights that aren’t completely pushovers and overall is just fun to play. There’s nothing here you haven’t seen elsewhere in some variation but the overall package is really nice and fun. If you need a smaller-sized metroidvania you want to finish in a short amount of time and don’t mind a cutesy style then this is pretty good.
Disclaimer: My scores/reviews are almost always based on having bought the game at close to the "lowest historical price" on steam at time of purchase. Quick score: 4/5 Notes: Pretty fun little metroidvania. Only real complaints are that I had a couple screen transition issues, 1 of which forced me to relaunch the game, and also the game is only about 90 minutes long. Game is very simple, but extremely well made and enjoyable from start to finish. Would recommend checking the options menu and consider turning on "hold to fire" option.
They really made an awesome game out of a few pixels, which reminds a bit of megaman or supermetroid no doubt. Great music, nice humor, good bossfights, cool concept overall.
