A great steam deck experience and is interwoven well with its inspirations. Solid 16-bit JRPG experience!
This is a fun little game. Interesting combat and good exploration. There are areas where it could use some work, like the script and the UI, but overall, it's a fun, bite-sized JRPG.
Given my like since its a fairly solid game overall. Story is a little forced since some people are obviously evil, but the party just kind of ignores them until it gets to a point, ending is a little open for a sequel though i wont say in what way. Visuals are a nice 16-bit look but as you progress you're reminded a lot of pokemon funnily enough. Exploration is alright, you just pick a cardinal direction to go from the main castle and the enemies/bosses scales up based on order you pick, so there is no real right or wrong answer unless you are aiming for something specific. Like each one has a QoL key item that'll let you do various things, like a item to move over water, item to hover over spikes (and just move faster overall), and an item to let you teleport. You'll also notice numbered chests near regular ones, which is just implemented progression for each area you clear, since each clear adds 1 to the number of chest you can open (it not tied to getting the crystal at the end as i found out, but more how many bridge passes you collected after the first one). Usually they contain a more powerful version of an item you got from the un-numbered chest. Game has various QoL options as well, you can increase or decrease how much exp you get. You can also turn off encounters at any point if you don't feel like doing them, or are backtracking to open chests (which you'll do a lot), or once you're done with the beastiary there. Trash mobs don't actually drop anything so unless you are using them to level then there is no reason to have them on otherwise. Battle system is good, usual turn-based stuff with the ability to turn spells into AoEs with the R button (on my controller). That said, for trash fights there really is no reason not to just AoE enemies and ST bosses every time. You can also change the element of your ally with gems, doing so will increase your damage with that element and makes you take less from that element and resistant element, so there is no reason not to until enemies with multiple elements starts showing up. Similarly with skills, each member starts out with one and unlocks more every few levels (though they aren't really unique since others will unlock them in order eventually). Your 1st mc starts out with the spin ability and honestly, its something you'll just use the entire game it's so broken, just give them 2 ailment or an elemental weapon and they'll just apply both to everything. Even when it gets to the point where its better to fight trash mobs with frenzy (perform 2-5 attacks on regular autos), having your supporter spin ailments after buffing allies is very valuable. Also stat changes are broken, give em a go. TLDR: Good game, solid if you like turn-based games and broken combos, trash fights are only for exp, you can boost the exp you get if you want, or turn them off when you're done, just collect everything.
Recomendo demais, 10/10
TLDR - It's pretty good! Might not be for everyone. Hoping for a sequel. You can find a video version of this review on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gw_pZfIzvaQ Starlight Legacy is a love letter to classic RPGs like Final Fantasy and Pokémon, delivering an experience that feels both familiar and engaging. The battle system is its strongest feature—simple enough to be accessible but with enough depth to keep combat interesting. Summoning is undeniably powerful, sometimes to the point of overshadowing other strategies. The variety of abilities inspired by classic job systems provides additional strategic options, making battles feel rewarding and dynamic. Accessibility options allow you to earn up to double the experience to allow faster progression and it is also possible to turn off random encounters. The game’s structure allows for some non-linearity, as players can choose between four different zones to explore in any order. This adds a welcome sense of freedom, letting players tackle objectives at their own pace. However, this also contributes to an issue with battle difficulty near the end of the game. Depending on how much optional content, such as a secret dungeon, the player completes, the final battles can feel either far too easy or unexpectedly difficult, leading to an imbalanced late-game experience. The soundtrack is a mixed bag. While the battle themes are energetic and memorable, the rest of the music struggles to leave the same impact. This contrast makes certain moments feel less immersive than they should, especially during exploration or key story beats. A more consistently strong soundtrack would have elevated the game’s atmosphere significantly. Narratively, Starlight Legacy starts off with a simple but serviceable story before gradually leaning into overly familiar RPG tropes. While there are moments of intrigue, the second half struggles to maintain momentum, making it difficult to stay fully invested. Stronger character development or perhaps better handled unexpected twists could have helped keep the story engaging throughout. Visually, the game embraces a retro pixel-art style that suits its old-school inspirations well. The environments are colorful and well-designed, though some areas feel repetitive after a while. The character sprites and enemy designs are well-crafted, but additional animations or visual effects could have helped bring battles to life even more. Despite its flaws, Starlight Legacy is an enjoyable throwback RPG with a solid foundation. The addictive combat and nostalgic charm make it worth playing for fans of the genre, but it also feels like a stepping stone to something greater. If the developer refines their vision, a sequel could turn Starlight Legacy into something truly special. My verdict is that this game is a solid throwback RPG with great combat—but it just needs stronger storytelling, better balance, and a more refined soundtrack.

🌌🗡️ “Classic JRPG vibes turned up to eleven! Starlight Legacy drops you into the kingdom of Evaria, where the fate of the land rests on three warriors and four powerful relics. Forests, mountains, deserts, skies—pick your path, explore in any order, and embrace that sweet retro 16-bit nostalgia. It’s non-linear, adventurous, and scratches that old-school RPG itch perfectly.” 🎶✨ ⭐ 5/5 — Highly recommend! Extremely charming retro JRPG! I love this game. It has so much charm and you can literally feel the love the developer put into the game. The music is fantastic and was one of the reasons why I bought it after playing the demo. It really feels like a game from the 16-bit era, not just a homage. Like a forgotten classic from the 90s, similar to the first Final Fantasy games. It has that magic. The story is your classic "find the relics" but it has some nice plot twists (I haven't finished it until now.). The fighting system is simple, yet effective. It is turn based with special abilities, summon, status effects, a rage meter and a lot of cool items. The game even has some metroidvania elements where you need items like a hammer or a flying carpet to progress. The graphics are lovely with some nice effects like snow or footprints in the sand and capture that 90s Super Nintendo feeling perfectly. You can even fly in 3D with a dragon. There were some minor issues but the developer fixed them immediately. Thanks a lot for that. In my opinion the game deserves much more attention. I hope it does well and we see a sequel. All in all if you like JRPGs, especially from the 90s, or the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters, you will love Starlight Legacy. Just buy it, it's fantastic.
A old-school JRPG made in 2025 needs to be praised and talked about more. The game is incredibly intuitive with the gameplay system as well as the wide array of items and skills you can use. The classic pixelart style and the music ties this game together perfectly with it's enthralling story. If you love the JRPG's from many years ago, classic Final Fantasy, classic Dragon Quest, with it's own uniqueness that stands out, this JRPG is for you!
