Been on an indie/RPGM kick lately, this one is my favorite! 42 hours played. 0 crashes, no game-breaking bugs. Native English text. Gameplay- What you'd expect from a turn-based RPG. Game is super committed to the retro mindset. But, being able to swap out party members mid-fight WITHOUT losing a turn is great and allows for some real strategizing. You can save any time you want, no desperately hoping for a nearby save point or needing to replay 40min because of a boss death. Grind-None thankfully. If I lost a fight it was only bad luck or I needed to adjust my gear n try again. Puzzles-Not difficult, but varied enough to keep it interesting. Few hidden objects and secret paths I only found by wall-hugging, which I rather appreciated. Music-Superb. My hat's off to the music designer cause wow. Characters-Unique and believable. They feel like real characters with agency, not just empty shell avatars along for the ride. Story-Compelling from start to finish. Some lulls here n there, but overall I just HAD to keep playing. Visuals-Charming sprites, RPGM cutscenes, nothing to write home about but well done. Dialogue-Corny, cute, and occasionally ham-fisted, but overall very solid. As an artistic choice, dialogue moves at the speed of an actual conversation, no mashing the Confirm button to skip. Not everyone's gonna like that, but I thought it was neat. Overall, an excellent addition to the library for anyone who enjoys this style of game. I'd buy anything this Dev team wants to create from now on.
8-Bit Adventures 2, developed and published by Critical Games, is a vibrant and heartfelt tribute to classic turn-based JRPGs, yet it goes far beyond being a simple nostalgia project. While it carries the aesthetic and mechanical spirit of NES, SNES, and early PlayStation RPGs, the game carefully modernizes nearly every aspect — pacing, combat logic, encounter design, narrative depth, and quality-of-life features — to create something that feels timeless rather than retro for retro’s sake. From the opening minutes, it becomes clear that this is a game made with enormous affection for the genre, but also with full awareness of what contemporary players expect from a polished, story-driven RPG. The story begins with recognizable fantasy motifs — threats from another dimension, heroes scattered across the world, the reappearance of a destructive force known only as the Glitch — but 8-Bit Adventures 2 doesn’t simply lean on trope familiarity. It builds its narrative slowly and thoughtfully, taking time to flesh out each character’s motivations, traumas, quirks, and personal histories. The cast feels grounded in a way that older sprite-based games often hinted at but could not fully achieve. Dialogue is warm, sometimes funny, sometimes surprisingly emotional, and the game gives many of its companions moments to shine beyond their archetypes. As the plot progresses, themes of identity, purpose, and perseverance take center stage, and the early lighthearted tone gradually deepens into something more meaningful without sacrificing charm. Combat is one of the game’s strongest assets. At first glance, it adheres to the traditional JRPG formula: turn-based battles, a three-character active party, and classic roles such as healer, tank, mage, and damage dealer. Yet beneath this familiar shell lies a clever layer of refinement. Swapping party members mid-battle allows for fluid tactics, and every character comes equipped with unique skills that encourage synergy and experimentation. Defense isn’t an afterthought — many defensive moves restore HP or apply helpful buffs, encouraging thoughtful turn economy rather than reckless aggression. Boss encounters in particular shine: they demand strategy, understanding of status effects, and careful team coordination. While difficulty can spike here and there, these spikes tend to feel earned, pushing players to explore new strategies rather than brute-forcing their way through. Exploration benefits enormously from modern design sensibilities. Unlike many retro RPGs that rely on random encounters, enemies here are visible in the environment. They don’t respawn unless intentionally reset, allowing players to engage or avoid combat as they choose. This opens the door for smoother dungeon traversal, puzzle-solving, and world exploration without the constant interruption associated with older titles. Dungeons themselves are thoughtfully built, mixing straightforward layouts with occasional clever gimmicks, optional treasure paths, or light environmental challenges. Towns feel lively and distinct, encouraging players to wander, interact with characters, and uncover side quests that expand the world’s lore and personality. The audiovisual presentation ties everything together beautifully. The pixel art, while evocative of classic 16-bit and 32-bit games, is polished with a level of detail and animation that surpasses most titles from those eras. Character portraits convey emotion, environments are colorful and varied, and battle animations strike a satisfying balance between simplicity and flair. The chiptune soundtrack is a highlight in its own right — energetic during battles, atmospheric during exploration, and emotionally striking in key narrative moments. It feels like a true evolution of the classic JRPG soundscape, proving both catchy and dramatically effective when needed. Though the game excels in many areas, it isn’t without imperfections. A handful of difficulty jumps may surprise newer players, some pacing dips appear in the middle chapters, and certain dungeons or story segments linger a bit longer than necessary. Additionally, players expecting sweeping innovation may find the overall structure traditional. Yet these minor limitations rarely overshadow the strengths of the experience. Rather than trying to reinvent the genre, 8-Bit Adventures 2 refines it — polishing beloved systems, presenting them with sincerity, and avoiding the clunkiness or frustration often associated with retro design. Ultimately, 8-Bit Adventures 2 is a deeply affectionate, meticulously crafted love letter to the golden age of JRPGs. It honors the genre’s roots while smoothing out its rough edges, delivering a story with genuine heart, a combat system that rewards strategy, and a world that feels vibrant and inviting from beginning to end. For long-time fans of turn-based RPGs and newcomers alike, it stands as one of the most impressive modern entries inspired by classic role-playing traditions — a game that understands why people fell in love with the genre in the first place and rekindles that spark with confidence and care. Wanted to 'check it out' before sleep and couldn't stop playing, really had to force myself to put it down, haha! As a HUGE Final Fantasy nerd this has all the right ingredients to sail straight into my heart. Don't let this one pass you by, it's amazing I PROMISE! My verdict after only an hour.. I can't wait to continue this journey, the story so far is very intriguing and the characters lovable.
Having a blast so far. You really feel like a kid again.
Criminally underrated game
No need to bury the lead: this game is an absolute masterpiece. First off the music is so freaking good throughout the entire game. Every single track from the title theme to the battle theme, the towns, the "LETS GO!" hype music, all wonderful. The sound design was also really good with some of the sounds like that of the main bad guy's "laugh" being iconic and creepy. The setting is really unique, and those that have played 8BA1 (I have not played it yet but intend to) will know what it is but you are introduced to it pretty quickly in this game and it made me go "holy crap!" When I figured it out The characters are really well-written. Their motivations are believable. Their dialogue is natural and their interactions are what you would expect from real people. The story throughout is engaging and unfolds with a great pacing and flow. The battles are really fun, I love the combat system, the combo attacks, the Omega moves, being able to swap characters out on the fly. It never felt tedious to be in combat. It was fun throughout the game to the very end. Speaking of the ending, it was incredible. The last boss fight was so well done, really fun, and absolutely epic. It definitely ended with a bang. The writing in the game is masterful. I teared up multiple times throughout the game and one part of the ending had me full on crying. This is the rare type of game that you are sad to finish because you will miss the world, the characters, the music. I'll definitely be playing it again in the future. I've been playing JRPGs for nearly 40 years and this game is amongst my favorites I have ever had the pleasure to experience.
This is a great classic style game with turn based combat, strong story and interesting characters. Enjoying the great music playing this game as well.
This turn-based JRPG was a huge surprise for me. It executes everything it sets out to do extremely well. I wasn’t expecting the game’s art direction to capture the charm of classic 16-bit Final Fantasy titles so beautifully, but it absolutely does. The characters are well thought out, and their personalities clash in interesting ways that make the party dynamic feel natural. The main story also ties in nicely with both the protagonists and the NPCs you meet along the way. Even the music, presented in 8-bit form, is incredibly well made and fits the gameplay perfectly. As for the gameplay, it blends classic turn-based mechanics from older Final Fantasy games with mechanics commonly seen in JRPGs you see today. Each character has their own MP/AP resources, unique abilities, and passives, which really gives them strong identities in battle. Another great feature is there are no random encounters, enemies are visible in dungeons and on the world map, so you can choose whether to fight or avoid them. Overall, 8-Bit Adventures 2 left a fantastic impression on me. I’m really glad I played it all the way through and even 100% the achievements (though I still plan to check out the free endgame content soon). If you're looking for a fantastic JRPG, or wondering what to play after Expedition 33, I highly recommend checking out 8-Bit Adventures 2. It perfectly blends classic turn-based design with modern gameplay ideas, and the story and characters make the journey genuinely memorable. And the best part: you can jump straight into this game without needing to play the first one.
There is nothing I love more than to see simple, smaller projects like these get their due. Just because a story treads familiar ground and writing ideas doesn't mean it can't be good. Sometimes a simple, well written plot, with good characters and themes is all you need. And 8BA2 has that in spades. There is so much heart in this game, so much care, and clear love of the genre itself. You can tell this game was made by a gamer who loves the medium and wanted to use it to express their own ideas. And between this game and the original I think they have succeeded wonderfully. The game doesn't over stay it's welcome, it's not overly complicated or difficult, it's story is well written and touches on some heavier subjects. But over all it's just a straight forward, fun time, harkening back to an age us older gamers miss dearly. So cheers to you Critical Games and thank you for sharing your world and ideas with us. I wish you nothing but success on your future projects. PS - Sarah, the thief, is best girl <3
This is the best pixel rpg that I have played so far. Its really good, I love the story, the characters, the battle mechanics and I am really invested in the world building. Also really like the item and skill descriptions. Keep it up!
