sweaty af platformer, 10/10
It was actually a bit of a surprise to me when I realized that Spelunky was kind of a rage game. Having not watched the trailer, all I really had to go off was the art and the general concept. I guess it shouldn’t have been that surprising in retrospect, I mean, are dungeoneering roguelikes supposed to be relaxing? I guess what I mean is that I was surprised by the amount of “unfairness” in the game, and I put that in quotes because most of the unfairness is by design. Now I’ve learned that this was a remake of freeware from the late 2000s, and now it makes even more sense. For perspective, there are
only 16
levels that each take 1-3 minutes to beat, and you can unlock shortcuts, but the HowLongToBeat time for this game is 20 hours (your mileage will vary with HLTB’s reliability, but this one seems reasonable). There are many ways you can die, and not just in a cosmetic sense. You can get punished when you’re too reckless and ambushed when you’re being too cautious. You can get juggled to zero health by the bounce-back and lack of invincibility, or you can get tapped by or fall into an instant death trap. One of the most painful is when you make a carefully planned maneuver that ends up hurting you because you didn’t account for everything on screen. It’s great. It’s not perfect in that respect. The control is fluid and precise, but there are times when your explorer feels just a little stiff compared to more refined platformers. Not surprising for such an old game, but then there are points where the unfairness is just tedious, and the clearest example is the ledge jump. For some reason, ledges are so sticky, you have to make a concerted effort to jump off of them, which is a real problem when you get to the Tiki traps. The worst part is that when ledges are just one block high, it’s so hard to tell when you’re attached that you might try and just walk away. There’s a decent variety of risk-reward and resource management options for a relatively small game. It isn’t too difficult; I could see a sizeable cohort on the high-skill end being able to raw-dog the game or grind for one item that breaks the game open for them. Still, I think most players will enjoy deciding how much treasure to gather and damsels to rescue to give themselves breathing room. Or you could play for a high score, I guess. My one minor issue for this is that it’s really easy to drop carrying items which you can only carry one of at a time. This might be a tradeoff for their power, but it just makes them straight up less fun to play with. My last gripe is that the final boss is pretty underwhelming, especially if you know the trick to beating it. There’s not much of a story, so it’s up to you if you want to try this or the sequel, or hell, the non-HD version of this is free, though in that case, it’s a very different experience. On top of the audio and visual upgrades, the larger sprites make looking up or down to keep yourself aware of your surroundings an essential part of navigation. Overall, a solid roguelike with an addicting fast pace. Check it out.
