About
Species: Unknown is a first-person survival horror game, playable in co-op with up to 4 players (private or public servers) or solo. You play as a mercenary sent aboard an abandoned spaceship. Your job? Execute high-risk contracts, make it out alive, and claim your reward. But keep in mind that you’re not alone. Something is hunting you…
Form a squad of up to 4 players to take on different contracts with escalating difficulty. Each mission plays differently depending on your objective, your teammates, the map and which of the 5 intelligent threats is stalking you. No one survives alone, but you can try.

Proximity Chat & Radio are available: distance matters, walls matter. Proximity Chat is bringing more tension, sometimes chaos, and unforgettable moments to your co-op sessions.

Every contract drops you into a different nightmare. Whether you're tasked with extracting a black box, capturing or eliminating an unknown threat, or even destroying the ship to prevent the creature from escaping… Each mission demands a specific strategy and none of them are easy.
The specimen is chosen procedurally from a growing roster of terrifying monsters. Each one comes with distinct behaviors, hunting patterns, strengths, and weaknesses. You’ll need to investigate your surroundings to gather vital clues and identify the threat in order to proceed smoothly (or not). Do your job and get rewarded, or die without anyone knowing.

Strategize as a group, make smart use of your tools that can turn the tide, if only for a moment:
Motion Tracker : Detect nearby movement and prepare for what's coming
Shield : Block deadly attacks and buy time for your team
Health Syringe : Heal yourself or allies in the heat of battle
Mini-Map : Navigate pitch-black corridors with real-time positional data
Guns won’t always save you. Some threats are too resistant or simply untouchable. But the right weapon, found at the right time, can help you push through or even take the creature down.

The higher the risk, the higher the reward. Completing contracts earns you credits you can use to:
Upgrade your gear
Buy new tools
Customize your appearance
Gather lore and build your own creature museum

Best indie horror game I've played. Decent lore behind the specimens and the spaceship you visit every match, the HSS Hawking, along with fun and equally horrifying species to go up against as you attempt to complete your selected objective and scram as fast as you can. There are ways to combat each specimen through finding special Tier 3 weapons around the map. Of course, all of the weapons spawn in no matter what as long as you're in the correct modes, "Kill the Specimen" and "Capture the Specimen." Through their descriptions, you can find out their vulnerabilities, and exploit them as intended by the objective. For specimen 005, you technically don't need a Tier 3 weapon to kill or capture it. I've completed most of my runs against it by using my revolver and running around the central safe room and shooting its weapon, and then its core as needed. Going against some of these species can be genuinely horrifying at times, especially as a solo player. With the right (or wrong) modifiers, you can be left without a chance of reviving or opening a door that might have been your only saving grace for escorting yourself back to the safety of your ship. The items and upgrades you obtain during your downtime in between operations make for good initial motivation to go for the operation with the highest pay, which typically has the highest modifiers, and will therefore be much more difficult and scarier. Essentially all 3 of the player upgrades are mandatory to have a fighting chance as a solo player. Regarding the items, the only 2 practical ones are the mini-map for missions that have the map disabled, and the shield, which can save you from impossible situations you will find yourself in. Everything else serves little purpose unless you're in a group of more than 2 players. And even then, just go with the shield and have one player with the mini-map. For the starting/Tier 1 weapons, the pistol and the revolver are the only guns of said category that are great options. the full auto pistol on the other hand is in absolute need of some sort of buff. It has little damage, and since its full auto, has little staggering capability unlike the revolver, or in some cases, even the pistol. The revolver is technically the 3rd best weapon in the entire game behind the shotgun and the laser weapon, but considering that you can get it the instant you spawn in, and considering how much damage and knockback it deals, it's easily #1 if you can hit your shots. The pistol, in my opinion, is a bit beneath the revolver, as even with its extra ammo and faster firing capability, the only times you will need a faster firing gun is when you're against the zombies from Specimen 010. Obviously, you don't play against 010 every single time, and when you are, canisters tend to be a better alternative than spraying all of them down anyways. The only flaws I have with this game in my time playing are that the newly-added turrets are in need of changes, and no substantial updates since 005. Turrets, off of changelogs alone, sounded like a great addition. But upon experiencing them, I don't see much of the appeal for them in their current state. As of September 13th, they're initially invisible (hidden inside of the ceiling), and will pop out once you're close enough and begin firing. That alone isn't that bad, but when you're low on HP, carrying something, or especially out of ammo, they can be slightly frustrating. For the revolver, they die in one shot, but they activate so quickly that you're guaranteed to take at least some damage. I'm also not 100% certain of this, but I believe they MIGHT be able to explode any canisters you're carrying, which will either one-shot you, or leave you very low on HP depending on your health upgrades. Regarding new content, the singular map so far has gotten fairly repetitive over the course of 40 hours. And with the new map arriving in October, It's going to be quite a boring wait, at least for super fans of this game (aka me). I would have easily had at least 75 hours if new species AND a new map was introduced. Finally, for the price, this is a must-purchase for $10. Not to give the developers any ideas for now, but for launch, I would easily pay $20, maybe even $25 for this on its quality and fun-factor alone. That was my experience as a largely solo player. If you're solo, pick this up. If you have friends, pick this up. It will entertain you regardless.

Reviews, worldwide (the counter carries no country): 18.86/day in the week to Jul 31 → 19.57/day in the week after.
For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 23 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 14 places towards #1, and the 2,515 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

Great concept, and I’m really enjoying playing the game so far! However, I can already feel the repetition starting to creep in. Having the same ship/map over and over again is beginning to take away some of the excitement for me. I’d really love to see a new map or some more variety added ASAP, as I think that would go a long way towards keeping players engaged. I know the game is still only at 0.24, and there’s talk of eventually reaching 1.0, so I’m hopeful there’s plenty more content and variety planned. If the updates keep adding reasons to come back, I can definitely see myself playing for a long time. Just hoping we don’t have to wait too long! 😄
Trop cool ! ( Je joue en solo j'ai pas d'amis... )
Great game for the price, it was very refreshing to have this kind of experience. I suggest playing with friends as most of the random players are kinda weird. Hopefully they add another ship and more monsters as it does get to a point where you have everything maxed out and know the layout of the map.
One of the best horror games out right now. Wait. No. This is a top 10 GAME right now. I would rather spend $60 on this game rather than the new call of duty every single time. LOVE this game. Highly recommend.
After unlocking everything and having 100% completion on all specimens i can say this game is an absolute blast to play, especially with friends. The graphics on this game are absolutely amazing and out shine a lot of triple A's, what is even more shocking is that its 5GB. There is multiple objectives you can choose from which includes "Extract the data" "Destroy the area" "Kill the Specimen" and "Capture the Specimen" each with their own unique methods of how to achieve the objective and variations depending on which specimen (Enemy) you get. There are 7 different specimens, all different from each other with special ways of killing you which you have to learn the best way to avoid. On top of that there are modifiers for each match that you play that will make the game more challenging, there are 10 modifiers total and depending on which difficulty you are playing on, there will be more or less modifiers. For example there could be low power on the ship keeping the place dark and eerie or there could be no map on the ship which adds to the mystery of where things could be or the power could already be on when you arrive which causes the specimen to more likely be aggressive instantly. Also when you first start you will find dead crew members which the specimen has killed, the wounds on their body will give you a good idea of which specimen you're up against and allows you to formulate a plan on how you are going to play. There is only 1 map at the time of writing this but trust me when i say you will have plenty of fun with this especially with friends. Adding to all of this it is only early access, which is astonishing. Would easily pay double or triple the price for this game. 10/10 recommend.
enemy ID 10, Jiggle physics when?
This game is AWESOME!!! The graphics and audio on this game are unreal and really help make the entire vibe of the game feel very immerse. The first time I played this at night with all the lights off on my OLED monitor was so fun. When the flashlight goes out, it was pitch black, it was lowkey scary in a fun way and the audio really made me feel like I was there. I hope they add new maps and a few more mobs into this game cause it has so much potential. 10/10 would recommend !
