This might be the absolute most jankiest game I've ever played. The only controller buttons that do what they're supposed to do is the left analog stick, navigating the menu is an absolute pain whether using controller or keyboard and I ended up getting stuck in a menu and couldn't back out of it at all. The concept is solid, the story is kinda weak (Darksiders meets Pokemon but not as cool as it sounds), the art is awesome but by god, mechanically, this game barely functions.
I think this game has a lot of potential, but has some significant user interface issues. They have just recently redone most of the user interface and it hasn't had the time to be adjusted and fixed. In a couple of months when they have the user interface smoothed out and working correctly this game will be very enjoyable, but right now it seems to slow down everything you want to do. For a game that has a major mechanic where positioning your units in your party changes the effectiveness of the party as a whole, it is too clunky to make experimenting and changing your party around as much fun as it should be. Would I recommend the game? As it sits right now it is a tentative yes. If they keep at it and keep polishing the experience I could easily see it being an addictive game that would take a bunch of my time. Pros: Party based monster collection RPG Interesting party building mechanics Targetable grinding Carefully built world encourages exploration toward next objective Cons: Light on story, but what there is is entertaining. Need to grind against the same units you use to get any real improvement. User interface is very rough and requires far to many actions for some things. Minimap doesn't have as much information as you would want.(portal links and soul reaper fragments in particular) Plays like the Early Access title it is. Good core idea but it still needs time to be fleshed out and expanded. I will be back to try the game again after it has had a couple of months to build up. Have a wonderful day.
Hidden gem on Steam, it reminds me of Siralim a bit which is good because I love Siralim. I had to get this because I love Monster Taming games and the darker theme with it was very appealing. The monster fusion mechanic is great and so is the art and music. So far it's a lot of fun and not a regret purchase like much of my steam library. Some features I would like to see are key remapping, ability to play entirely (or as much as possible) with mouse only, and speed up as a toggle. The latter two would really make this an even greater experience for me. These things aren't deal breakers as they are now just personal preference.
Back in March a reviewer said they recently revamped the interface and in a few months it would be smoothed out. It is now January, 10 months later. In my brief experience with this game that interface have made me seriously contemplate suicide. That interface is an affront to all that is good and right in this world. That interface is perhaps the most abominable thing mankind has ever created. That interface surely once nested in Hell, however Satan himself kicked it out as it was simply too vile. It seems that interface will have an article about it added to the Geneva Conventions before the devs will fix it. Can I recommend this game? No, no I cannot. The game itself seems that it might be decent (besides the horror that is the overworld map where you walk around), but it is sadly held captive by that interface. If you are thinking about getting this game, then I urge you to flee as fast as you can before that interface gets to you.
Absolutely loving my experience. Soul Reaper feels like a love letter to the style of games I love. Soul Nomad and the world eaters, Disgaea, Cross Edge, Chaos Wars. I am currently working my way into New Game+ and plan to return to this Review with a more comprehensive take, until then Soul Reaper has my Stamp of Approval.

Follow our curator for similar games
https://store.steampowered.com/curator/35180752-3-point-play/ RPG TBS + mechanics + comedic = Similar to Heroes of Might and Magic early days with its own unique mechanics minus the castles. Also reminds me of Shaman King where you infuse weapons with souls.
It's a okay game but I wouldn't recommend it. Pros: -Nice animations, going into it I was expecting it just being sprites with a bit of animations but no it has a good array of animations for attacks, damage, etc. -enemies aren't recolored skins of each other, there are a few but just in the beginning area alone I was met with a wide array of enemies Cons: -The grind is real, I'm only in the begging area so far but each battle only awards 1-4 xp per battle that can be used to level up your monsters individually, as in you got a team of 4 and only 6 xp well that 6 xp doesn't go fort the whole team you have to decide how to distribute that xp for me I put all the xp into Soul Reaper himself -Which leads to another point if Soul Reaper dies in battle its an automatic game over, this is annoying especially in the begging when you only have 2 monsters to start out with and Soul Reaper is one of them -UI, sometimes the UI is straightforward and other times its a game of point and click adventure as you hunt down the thing you need to click -In my experience the map was useless I could barely get any real useful info from it I can see some real effort went into making this game but I can't recommend it as I found myself bored at times while playing this
Fun and addictive game. The concept is interesting in that the same resource (souls) is used for everything. You accumulate hundreds (maybe thousands) of them very quickly through battling. You can slot them into your party where they appear as creatures to help you in battle. Or you can slot them into the sockets in your gear where they’ll add stats and abilities for you to use in combat. Battles are fast and plentiful, but no matter how many you win, you and your creatures don’t gain xp or level up in a traditional sense. That’s where another use for souls comes into play. You can have your character eat them for xp, or you can fuse them with an existing creature, which gives that creature xp. There are also row bonuses, equipment to fuse together, socketed soul combos, and probably more I’m forgetting. It’s just a great game for people that like to to collect a large party and tinker with things. Almost like a Disgaea vibe, though not that level of polish, and very different gameplay. It’s seems a little pricey to me, but that’s subjective and I've been spoiled by cheap game prices. It’s clear a lot of work went into this, and it's sort of a niche genre, so it probably wouldn't make sense to make it cheaper. All in all, I’m happy to support a project like this. I don’t know of anything else quite like it.
