genuinely a really great game *holds you down and starts forcefully having sex with you* thank you for the years of servcice
Cubes and knights is a grumpy little game that dares you to play it and try to squeeze some fun from its adorably creepy low-poly body. It's not that hard once you get a hold of the basic mechanics of dodging and parrying. The levels are pre-made, with only element of randomness to them being the items present, and the placement of entrances and exits - which means it would take a lot less time to beat if it didn't limit the number of lives like some old NES game, and just gave you the option to save, rather than make you replay the first levels again and again. Funny enough, the game's creator suggests a simple cheat to effectively do that (just backup the folder with the savegames), but won't implement it as the game's feature officially, insisting that it should be treated as a roguelike experience. Oh well. In any case, the game is a lot of fun, and I'd be happy to pay more for a truly roguelike sequel, based around the same mechanics and aesthetics, but with more variety in weapons, powers and enemies - and, crucially, procedurally generated levels.
Unique mysterious medieval fantasy game where the king sends you down into the eerie dungeon depths to slay the wandering undead, cruel wizards and (hopefully) put an end to whatever evil lurks at the lowest layers. The game feels kinda janky and floaty, but it has a lot of charm and it's satisfying to master the combat and to unravel the secrets. There are some slight roguelike elements (permadeath and random items/spawn location) but it's mostly just battling through the same dungeon until you get lucky or get the hang of things. The style and atmosphere are phenomenal. The game presents a formidable challenge. It's quite short but I'd still recommend.
Artstyle is unique, interesting, and looks good. Sound design is good, despite lackluster ambiance and no music. Gameplay is simple but effective, weighty and fun. How environments can be destroyed is also cool: attacks can break barrels, wooden gates and vases, but only falling enemy bodies and magic can break the walls, ceiling and floor. This is sometimes used for secrets, even. But the main problem is: it lacks mechanics and content. Some RPG stuff would do wonders to make the game more enjoyable... but another big problem is that levels are barely randomized, which is a bit sad and boring, but at least it makes progression consistent (you always get the same weapons in the same order). Not enough to make up for the fact this makes retries super repetitive, specially when the rooms+enemies you go through each floor are basically the same, just in slightly different positions. Other annoyances are: -Mouse sensitivity and FOV do not go high enough; -Wonky translation; -Interface feels unfinished and is not up to par, might be a bit buggy too. Specially the dialogue/interaction window and the minimap; -Animations are not good enough for such a heavily parry-based game; -Poison gas of lower areas not only is not distinct from normal fog at all, but also seems random as to when it actually damages you; -Aiming with the wand is... not aligned at all and lacks a crosshair, which would be ok if the projectile hitbox wasn't not only very precise, but also seems to fly randomly; -Mages can cast (unblockable) spells instantly, making it extremely frustrating to fight them; -Resurrection Relics simply allow you to try the current floor again (with no items, and the same possibly low HP you started it with). It's pretty weird and amkes them almost useless; Overall, it's neat, but lacks meat. It's a very cheap game so that's OK. I hope the developer keeps making more games, with just more stuff, in the future.
The combat system is quite janky and there isn't really anything to the game beyond that. It's fun for half an hour or so.
So much more depth than it seems.
