About

Throughout your journey in Rumbral, you'll come across strange magenta puddles that allow you to travel to another reality. Shift between these parallel worlds to influence both and find your way forward.

You wake up in a dark, mysterious forest with no memory of who you are or why you're there. Move through a world filled with abandoned structures and puzzles, perhaps left behind by others. Survivors? Explorers? Discover strange magenta liquids that reveal secrets of the past… and maybe of yourself. But be careful: you might not be alone in this desolate place.

The path won’t always be easy: you’ll need to solve different obstacles that stand in your way to keep moving on.

Along the way, you'll find special collectible items, some more hidden than others. Gathering them will help you uncover the story of this broken world.

Nice homage to Playdead's Limbo and Inside. Sadly, that's the only positive I can say. I hate to call out a different studio in a review, but since this is basically a copy of both of the a.m. games, I do have to. It is such a short game, that I'm glad it's already discounted on release. And because it's so short, I barely had time to enjoy it fully. Despite playing through it twice. The atmosphere, as much as it screams Inside, is seemingly quite strong, but eventually the game becomes quite empty, considering how short it is. I would expect it to be a at least 30-40% more packed with puzzles or encounters. And as much as it tries to bring out Inside, the soundtrack is basically non-existent, so it dies on its own attempt to recreate it. As for the gameplay, it's basically weaker Limbo. The puzzles are trivial, not really engaging and bring nothing new to the table. And the reality slipping mechanic, as fun as it could be, is really not utilized as much as I would like. Especially since it seems to be a gigantic part of the story and is never explained (even though there are hints). Of course. Not sure if it was just due to lazy writing, deadlines or purely for a cosmetic reason, since the narrative seems to be building on it quite a lot. But it unfortunately feels that it was implemented only for the sake of it. The game would be the same without it. And yeah, usually these games almost always retain some sort of mysterious veil over the lore and phenomena, in this case it feels like the devs can't really afford to be too cryptic. Again, because how short and weak the game is in comparison to Limbo/Inside. I weep in anticipation for Playdead's upcoming project. Doubt I'll ever play this one again.

If you’re familiar with atmospheric platformers, you already know the story is usually minimal, told quietly through background and foreground details. This game follows that approach from the start. Your main character, a humanoid dark figure with metallic plates on its arms and legs and a mask covering its face, wakes up in a forest. There’s no explanation, no introduction, and no text telling you what’s going on. It feels similar to other games in the genre, where the setting resembles our world, but something clearly went wrong. Everything is abandoned or in ruins. There’s no one alive, and the only thing you do encounter seems intent on killing you. As you move forward, you pass through industrial locations like mines, lumberyards, and junkyards, each introducing a new mechanic to the environmental challenges, but it doesn’t go overboard. The gameplay is simple. You move to the right, jumping, crouching, and interacting with objects to get past obstacles. Nothing is clearly marked, so you have to pay attention to your surroundings and figure things out on your own. You’ll sometimes find yourself throwing rocks, where the aim and strength are fixed, so it’s all about positioning, and mostly pushing and pulling crates to create platforms. One of the unique mechanics involves puddles of a blood-like liquid scattered across the ground. Stepping into one shifts the visuals into a bright red tone and sends you into the past. In that version of the world, structures are intact, while everything else remains the same. It’s a clever idea that’s mostly used to bypass destroyed parts of the environment, like a collapsed roof or a broken beam that no longer exists in the past. Movement comes with its own limitations. You’re confined to a single plane, moving left and right, and climbing ladders up and down. You can’t use stairs or sidestep obstacles, and you can’t jump off ladders either, which forces you to look for alternate routes instead of taking shortcuts. At times, you’ll need to switch between multiple puddles and carefully navigate your way to a crate, a switch, or some other key element. Later on, the game introduces pressure switches and elevators to add a bit more variety. Death is quick and often unforgiving. You’ll fall into pits filled with brambles or get crushed by environmental hazards like logs or cranes. Most of the time, it’s not too punishing thanks to frequent autosaves placed around puzzles and dangerous sections. However, things get frustrating when something starts chasing you. Escaping requires near-perfect timing, and even the slightest mistake can lead to a sudden death that feels a bit cheap. The good news is that this kind of chase sequence is limited to a single chapter. The bad news is that the game itself is very short. It only has six chapters, and the last two can be finished in just a few minutes. Then it simply ends, without a strong final moment or even a hint of what comes next. It leaves the whole experience feeling more like an extended preview or the first chapter of a larger game, especially since there’s even a speedrunning achievement for finishing it in under 45 minutes. Of course, this isn't a unique case, and many games gain enough popularity for a bigger sequel. I hope it happens the same to this one. To add a bit more replay value, there are collectibles hidden throughout the stages. You do unlock stage select after finishing the game, but it doesn’t tell you where the missing items are, so finding them can feel a bit aimless. On top of that, there are also several secret achievements tied to doing something unusual, which adds some incentive to spend some more time in stages.
We rarely do the opposite of what haters do, to leave positive comments when they're deserved, to leave a light, and this deserves it: Rumbral achieves something remarkable, something magical: making the real world disappear. From the first few minutes, the game has something that pulls you in, and I mean really pulls you in, like nothing else exists anymore. I'm talking about everything that's behind it: the atmosphere is crafted with a level of detail that makes you want to stop and look. The architecture of each scenario keeps conveying different emotions throughout the journey, and the sound... the sound is on another level. With headphones it's a completely different experience, it nearly touches your soul. Everything is there for a reason, placed with clear intention, like every note in a song. We often overlook details, but that doesn't mean they aren't there, and that's what has impacted me most about Rumbral: the amount of love and work that has gone into every single detail. I'm not just talking about it "looking pretty", I'm talking about technical and creative decisions that someone made consciously, one by one, investing their time in each one, thinking about how the player was going to feel. That's what real artists do. It's an intense game, and when it ends it leaves you wanting more. And that, at the end of the day, is the best compliment you can give any piece of work: that when it's over, it hurts a little. We often forget that in a world overwhelmed by noise, conflict, and uncertainty, video games have become something far greater than simple entertainment, they are a refuge. Today's developers craft entire worlds with their own rules, stories, and beauty, offering players the rare chance to step away from the chaos and simply exist somewhere else for a while. That rest is not trivial, it's necessary. The relief you feel is genuine, and nowadays, having a place to breathe, even a digital one, is one of the most valuable gifts a creator can give another human being. So, THANK YOU to the Rumbral team for giving us somewhere to land. That is priceless.
I do recommend This game it was fun and challenging with all the puzzles along the way. A lot of dif realm puzzle stages. only down side. not that it ended too short in general but that if just felt like it was short at the end. 8/10
The art direction and graphics are really pretty, and the atmosphere is great, but pushing boxes around gets old very quickly, especially considering this is a 50 minutes game and you spend most of those 50 minutes doing just that. I actually couldn't even finish the game because the last section with the animal chasing me was impossible for me to complete. The animal is extremely fast and the main characters is excessively slow. At first I thought this was a skill issue on my part, until I watched Youtube videos and realized the animal in my game did not behave the same way it does on those videos. In my game, it starts charging at me way earlier, which makes it impossible for me to reach the hiding spots before it kills me. Anyway, I really wanted to finish the game but from what I've seen, the last 10 minutes of it is also pushing more boxes so I don't feel like I missed a lot. I just wanted to give my review in case the devs want to make more games. I really love the art direction, but the level design needs work in my opinion. Update: So I decided to change to Recommend because I managed to finish the game today and actually consider it to be an ok experience. What I said on top still applies, the game is not perfect, but it's far from being a bad game I wouldn't recommend. I just think that last part with the animal at the end being so difficult got the best of me, but from what I've heard from the devs, it's gonna be updated soon so that's a good thing for newcomers. The first half of the game is repetitive but still fine. If I were to recommend other stuff, it'd be to avoid being so punishing and try to make the platforming sections more precise by giving your character more precise transitions between animations, especially jumps, so that it doesn't feel floaty (especially when landing) and also time better those parts in which you have to push boxes on top of moving platforms (those that go up and down), because you usually only have time to push the box alone on top of it (without you getting on) and then you have to wait until it comes back down to actually get on top of it. it doesn't give the player enough time to act and makes those part less fun.
Очень приятная головоломка, хорошие и не сложные уровни, мрачная атмосфера (олень реально криповый). В духе Limbo и Inside. Мне понравилась, было очень интересно. Надеюсь будет продолжение:3
