cool
If you aren't easily subject to Nostalgia; this game isn't for you. Sonic Mania combines the slippery feeling of Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Genesis, with some of the worst level design since 3D Blast. The acquittal of key stable features like the Spin Dash and having fun truly baffles me to this day. Do you hate exploring levels and performing cool tricks? Great! Because Sonic Mania sticks you into a binary game-play loop of watching a blue circle bounce around a visual ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and slow, boring, and confusing 2D platforming. Sonic Mania effectively serves as a repackage for Sonic CD with new Mario Maker tier level design. If you want Classic Sonic, you can play Generations, CD, 2, 3, Rush, or even Advance. If you want fun 2D platforming, you can play any other game. I can easily slot this into the worst Sonic games of all time, alongside Sonic 4, Boom, and Chronicles. And could happily say I'd never want to finish this game had I not already paid for it 2 years ago. My collective 20 odd hours between Switch and PC are hours I retrospectively wish I had spent playing a better game.
20/10 y god
looks great, sounds great, Very fun, but I don't like how stubbing your toe on moving platforms instakills you.
So I was playing Sonic Adventure 2 (different game, I know, just stay with me here) and I had the realization that it's actually pretty hard to convey depth in a 3D platformer. There's so many parts of that game where you try to boost at an enemy but instead you fall to your death or go shooting off wherever, and why? It looks like you were exactly on point. That's because you understand distance, failing binocular vision, using shading and motion, comparing how fast objects move in perspective with how fast they should be moving relative to distance. If you ever look closely at your eyes you see they're constantly twitching if only slightly. This also helps you cover up the natural blind spot where your optic nerve connects to your eye. If you mark a piece of paper and focus just right you'll find that the mark disappears, the paper just looks blank. That's your brain covering up your blind spot so you don't get distracted. So, next time you play a very primitive but functional 3D platformer like Mario 64, just remember all the artistry and technique that went into making it playable and "fair"!
