It's like...a really mediocre game, with janky and slow gameplay, uninteresting fights, not great 2d stages with (mostly) unfun platforming, terrible antagonists, annoying protagonists and a borrowed visual identity that I don't really care for. BUT! the parkour mechanics are actually pretty fun to engage with (even if they are kinda underutilized), the 3d stages are mostly okay, even fun sometimes, and i actually kind of liked Eggmans whole deal in this one (Zavok was okay too.) It's not great, not even good, and definitely NOT worth the full price at all...but it's still kind of fun at times, enough so that i'd say it's worth buying on sale.
This game....was an experience. For the longest time, i've wanted to play the Wii U Sonic games, and this was one of the two games released for it. But since this is a Wii U port, it means we don't get the Zelda and Yoshi DLC's without the use of mods. Sonic Lost World is not a Sonic game. The reason why Sonic stands out from the rest is his speed...and speed isn't a thing in this game, which is a shame because it has parkour mechanics which would have been AMAZING to build up speed! It was very obvious it was inspired by Mario Galaxy in terms of level design (even using the Grass-Desert-Island-Forest-Snow-Lava formula most 2D Mario games use). As for the gameplay? I...would not reccomend it. The controls and physics are bad, and since Sonic is super slow in this game, it feels as if there is no momentum in jumps. Even as a long-life Sonic fan, this game felt so dry and almost soulless. It wasn't even the "so bad it's good" game like Sonic Boom, it just....felt like it had nothing special. The Deadly Six feel like they try too much to appear intimidating, and they just...don't. Sonic tries way too hard to be funny to the point where he is annoying, and Tails is treated like he's JUST Sonic's nerdy friend who can't do anything but "fix and analyze things" and nothing more. The game overall isn't terrible since at least the graphics are colorful and as always, they cooked an amazing soundtrack, but....it's not good. And since there's literally nothing that stands out, i can't reccomend this to the casual platformer players who take their time, or Sonic fans who are looking for another speedy game, which is what this game was trying to aim for...but failed.
This has got to be the only Sonic game I've played and genuinely had a heart time completing cuz of my enjoyment levels. Feels a lot more Mario than Sonic, and not only do we have a run button in this Sonic game- but not once does the game *tell* you about this through gameplay. This wouldn't be much of an issue if the game didn't REPEATEDLY do this. Due to my stubbornness I forced myself through the long last level twice trying to beat it on my own before doing a Google search and - WOULD YOU LOOK AT THAT! ANOTHER MECHANIC (CRUCIAL TO BEATING THE FINAL BOSS BTW) NOT *EVER* EXPLAINED! To play devil's advocate, maybe it's just this port that doesn't tell you anything, and the run button IS shown in the controls menu... But it just ruined my experience. I didn't wanna go back to the levels I had beat with my new-found knowledge cuz I didn't like em that much already. Genuinely think you're better off with Forces and maybe modding it to play better than this game.
Dont waste your money on this even if it was free
I can't say there isn't *any* fun to be had with this game, but even at its best: what the experience amounts to is just Generations with more baggage slowing it down.
Very chill Sonic game up until the final zone. It gets kinda hectic but overall a fun experience. The story is pretty meh but Eggman has some pretty good lines in it.
