Gem of a game, the reviews didn't lie. Silent hill vibes. The last minigame sucked though

I'm currently trying and failing to get through Episode 1. I've been struggling with the heartbeat mini-game. Although I think there's a good game in here somewhere, I just can't get to it. Let me back up a bit. The game itself is billed as third-person fixed-camera survival horror with a limited number of characters. While I am not a big fan of third-person fixed-camera games (worst of all worlds, in my opinion), it is a good choice for a puzzle-oriented game with a strong story. I do love the atmosphere and the setting. Your character is trying to find a man who disappeared in a writer's old mansion, as well as to find out what happened to the writer and his family. This is done very nicely. Occasionally, however, your character will need to hide from the malevolent presence within the house--and this is where I'm running into issues. Assuming you make it into a hiding spot (not a given thanks to the janky controls), you then have to calm yourself and slow down your heartbeat with a mini-game. Which I just can't get to work. What's frustrating about this is that in theory it should be so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ simple; you click both triggers on your controller (or hit your spacebar) when the white icon fills up. Easy, right? Except I keep dying here. Permadeath also means that I can't do what you'd do in nearly another game: just go back to a save and try again. No, I have to go back in as a new character and play the game some arbitrary amount of time until I run into the stupid heartbeat mini-game again. One mistake I may have made was to turn off vibrations on my controller. I usually play with just keyboard and mouse and frankly find vibration annoying (seriously, does it need to vibrate every time I go into a new room?), but the vibration is supposed to give you some feedback for the heartbeat mini-game. So I re-enabled it. No luck. I also tried it with the spacebar. Died again. Looking back at the forums, the developers did acknowledge an issue with this back when the game was initially released--but I don't feel they actually fixed it (and I saw people having trouble with it well afterwards). At this point I don't really care; it's not fun. I don't feel it actually adds anything to kill the character in a way that frankly feels arbitrary. I'm not sure if I'm failing because I just don't get the cues or if my controller input is not being read properly or if it's something else entirely. Anyway, I feel this is a good game ruined by a horrible design decision (or a horrible implementation of that design, take your pick). I may try this in easy mode (I've been playing in the default Edgar Allan Poe mode) and see if I can actually get through the damn thing. If so, I will update my review.
Game is cool but drags on way too long (or maybe it seemed long bc i play so slowly). Reached the final chapter but I got burned out. The puzzles are becoming way too obscure and tedious. The good: 1. Pacing is great, always an atmosphere of suspense and anticipation. 2. Some really good horror setpieces , some really subtle too (think The Haunting of Hill House, great stuff). 3. Some clever fun puzzles. 4. Art direction is pretty neat. The bad: 1. Very ugly females (might be some woke there). 2. Puzzles near the end become very obtuse and tedious. 3. Attack mini games become repetitive and more of a chore rather than challenging. 4. Some bs insta deaths you have no way of avoiding or anticipating. All in all a pretty good experience 7/10, altho i mostly preffer action horror like RE4.
Pretty good game. Its fun. Spooky atmosphere, cool different characters to play. I personally prefer plain old fashioned point and click, its just so much easier to only use mouse. Then i can hold my coffee in the other hand! I like the no permadeath option. Dont care how people think something is meant to be played, I get too stressed. Plus short attention span, I mean way back when we had no choice, now that we do, Ill go play something else. So thats a plus. And so is third person, yay no motion sickness.
I haven't finished the game yet, but so far its been interesting. Spooky without being outright scary and maybe a couple of jump scares. There are moments where the game forces you to view at a different camera angle and then it will switch back pretty abruptly which I'm not a fan of. Also, it is possible to accidently do some puzzles out of the correct order and confuse the entity about where in the narrative you are so it can get a little buggy at times that way? Nothing you cant salvage by referencing a guide and getting back to proper order but still. Over a decent game.
Great game. Clearly inspired by classic survival horror. Certainly more interesting than modern RE games that fail to capture the fear factor of older games. Puzzles can be a bit confusing but the game makes me worried about doors and floors. 🤣 Ps: Recommended with headset if want the game to make you more scared.
