I like the puzzles, but the game is so short (less than 3 hours) and the controls are so bad that it's really hard for me to recommend it unless you catch it on sale. To clarify on the controls, your camera is locked to isometric angles (sometimes your snake is obstructed from all isometric angles, though at least you can still drag its head if you know where it is behind obstructions), and clicking and dragging in 3D space is REALLY awkward. Your snake will often go in unintended directions because the tolerance between them is wonky, and then when you try to back it up it'll go loop around some more.
Snake Blocks is a unique puzzle game where you need to drag your snake from point A to B within a specific amount of moves. The levels are well designed, get harder as you progress, take only a few minutes each to clear, and can be challenging. With 50 levels and a level editor to create your own levels, the game offers a good amount of content to keep you busy for a while. Sadly enough, the controls and camera angles are so frustrating, it makes the game unplayable. My snake keeps going in directions where I don't want him to go, it's so annoying! This puzzle game had potential and the problems could have been fixed easily...
The lack of a free camera annoys me, its fixed on specific angles where i dont see why, making it hard to guide your snakes sometimes. Controlling them is a bit cumbersome too, but ironically easier on the harder levels (as theres less options) It's an alright concept, but i wouldnt say its worth the price.
Snake Blocks features such great positive reinforcement that I almost feel like I should give the game a positive review based on just that! http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=608149037 The game starts relatively simple and includes a tutorial to show you how to play the game and how to use the game's camera control which I personally am not a fan of but it doesn't ruin any form of the game for me. You simply have to drag the snakes to the position the game requires within the length of the snake. The more snakes that are involved, the trickier this gets as you need to prioritise getting shorter snakes to the goal first.
I am indifferent about this game... The puzzles are good and become challenging, but what's a huge turn off is the camera control and angle, and how to move the snakes. Click on a snake head and have to move it in an awkward way that it's possible, common even, for it to go in a completely direction that you have to roll it back. There are also blind spots that become difficult to feed through, even if when able to see through the walls, that you have to angle the camera to find an opening or possible route, and have to memorize it but at a specific angle. It was very frustrating to control the snake head in order to solve puzzles, than it was on the puzzles itself. I sadly can't recommend this game due to the controls and camera frustration. ----- Check out more games I see that deserve more attention from my curator group: BluePaw's Underrated Games List Join and/or follow if you wish.
is it a bad game? no. do i recommend it? no. i'm not really too happy with that but you have to have standards to offer meaningful reviews and half a recommendation is hardly a recommendation at all. snake blocks is a decent casual puzzle game. not too simple and certainly not too hard. i solved all levels without help after 3.7 hours so that is kind of what you expect. however a lot of the time you will find yourself fighting the controls and the camera and that was really infuriating. puzzle games have been around since jesus was a cowboy and you'd expect people to know how to set up intuitive controls and camera. but not here. you can rotate the camera all you want but it always snaps back to the nearest 90° angle. so that's good enough to have a look but as soon as you want to control your snakes the camera snaps back and you can't see where you're going. also you can toggle the level blocks to be transparent but the snakes stay opaque so you still can't see what you are doing. the camera snaps to isometric view but the controls don't really play along. a lot of times you will find yourself cursing as the snakes go all over the place. but not where you want them to go. that's pretty meh in my book. if you're just in for something casual then go for it but if you expect a little more than a basic puzzle game with skeleton camera and controls then look somewhere else.
-- Review for Linux version of the game -- Works on Linux (Debian 9), no performance issues. However, the puzzles are too easy, backgound is acid pink or acid light green, my eyes got almost bleeding after 15 minutes ingame (by that time i finished a chapter out or 3 or 4 available because puzzles are too easy). Why I won't continue playing it is also because of controls. You have to rotate 3D object to see your moves and to lay your path. However this part fails to deliver so your object bounces back no matter how you want to rotate it. acid colors, bad controls and too easy puzzles is what influenced me to give this game a negative review. I do appreciate it to have fully working Linux port but it's not sufficient in this case.
This game is brilliant, challenging, and tons of fun. It's calm, happy, and very relaxing. Not to mention, it's straight-up adorable. With a great level editor and Workshop support coming soon, there is only room for improvement and expansion. I definitely recommend picking this one up.
