Slipstream 5000, developed by Gremlin Interactive and The Software Refinery and published by Funbox Media Ltd, stands as a distinctive example of mid-90s experimentation, blending futuristic racing with aerial freedom in a way that still feels unusual even today. Rather than confining players to traditional tracks or even hover-based surfaces, the game places you in anti-gravity aircraft capable of full three-dimensional movement. This single design choice defines the entire experience, transforming what could have been a conventional racer into something closer to a hybrid between a flight game and an arcade competition. The core gameplay revolves around high-speed races across expansive environments, but the sense of freedom fundamentally changes how these races unfold. Players are not simply following a linear path; they are navigating open airspace, adjusting altitude, diving for shortcuts, and climbing to gain better positioning. This verticality adds a layer of spatial awareness that goes beyond the usual racing formula, forcing players to think not just about speed, but about trajectory and positioning in a fully three-dimensional environment. The result is a gameplay loop that feels both exhilarating and slightly disorienting at first, especially for those unfamiliar with older control schemes. Combat elements are woven directly into the racing structure, adding an extra layer of unpredictability. Players can equip and use weapons to disrupt opponents, turning each race into a balance between aggression and precision. While these mechanics are relatively straightforward, they serve their purpose by breaking up the monotony of pure racing and introducing moments of chaos. Deciding when to attack versus when to focus on maintaining a clean racing line becomes an important part of the strategy, even if the overall depth of the system remains limited by modern standards. Track design plays a significant role in keeping the experience engaging. Courses are built to take advantage of the game’s vertical movement, with elevation changes, open spaces, and environmental obstacles that encourage experimentation. Some routes reward risky maneuvers, while others favor safer, more controlled navigation. The sense of speed, combined with the freedom to move in any direction, gives the game a unique flow that can feel both liberating and demanding. However, this same freedom can also make the game harder to pick up, as it requires a level of control and orientation that isn’t immediately intuitive. From a modern perspective, the game’s presentation is clearly dated. The visuals reflect early 3D design, with simple geometry and minimal detail, but they remain functional and readable. There is a certain charm in the retro aesthetic, especially for players who appreciate the era, though it may not hold the same appeal for those accustomed to contemporary graphics. The audio design is similarly modest, providing basic feedback and atmosphere without standing out as a defining feature. One of the more noticeable challenges for new players is the control scheme. Originally designed with joystick input in mind, the handling can feel awkward when using a keyboard or modern setups. Mastering the controls takes time, and early races can feel clumsy until the player adapts. This learning curve is one of the game’s biggest barriers, as it can discourage those expecting a more accessible experience. However, once the controls are understood, the game reveals a smoother and more responsive system than it initially suggests. In terms of content, Slipstream 5000 offers a respectable amount for its time, including multiple tracks, different pilots, and various vehicles to choose from. The inclusion of multiplayer options adds to its replayability, though the overall progression is fairly straightforward. There are no deep customization systems or long-term progression mechanics, meaning that much of the game’s longevity comes from mastering its unique handling and improving performance across races. Ultimately, Slipstream 5000 is a product of a time when developers were willing to take risks and experiment with new ideas, and that spirit is evident in every aspect of its design. It doesn’t offer the refinement or accessibility of modern racing games, but it compensates with a concept that remains refreshingly different. For players willing to embrace its quirks and adapt to its control scheme, it delivers a fast-paced and unconventional racing experience that still holds a certain appeal decades after its release. Rating: 7/10

Boring
I was suprised it comes with emulator, because it's very old game, but still I had fun. Only what's the point of championship if it doesn't unlock tracks even if you get the first place in the championship? Nowadays these graphics can't be judged, at the time of orginal release I assuming where good. But still I had troubled in Norway because I couldn't see where snow on mountain ended and sky started. Maybe keyboard controles aren't recommended for this game, but for me they were good enough. Also I found you can control aircrafts steering with mouse, but it was worst then keyboard. Maybe too hight of mouse sesitivity or vice versa, which can't be changed in game. Which is understable for the orginal time of release.

I raced at sound speed and now my coffee floats behind me — even the mug applied for astronaut training.
