I get it, I get it.. Everything queer is obligated to be sad. But why? Why did they force the player to control an elderly grandmother that is homophobic and says stuff like "she's disgusted" by her own grandson, and that she is mad about his "choice of being gay"? Why do I have to sit there for 30 minutes hearing this typical trope? Why should we always turn the other cheek and accept the hate. Why is the main character making excuses and has to "understand and accept the hate because it's just so"? Shallow, pretentious and stereotypical wannabe-tearjerker that doesn't live up to the ratings imho.
Will dies in a car accident and the people in his life put together the “fragments of him” via recalling memories. Information • POV changes a lot: Will, his grandmother, his ex-girlfriend, and his current partner. Praises • Point-and-click storytelling sets the tone for certain thoughts and actions. • The presentation of Will’s partner’s grief was well done enough that I got a bit teary-eyed. • Will’s queerphobic grandmother admits she was wrong, so there’s some satisfaction in that. • Tidbits regarding life in England. The player even gets to see a simulation of what it’s like to drive on the left side of the road. Complaints • For some reason, Will’s parents aren’t included in recalling memories of him, even though nothing in the story indicated that they weren’t still around. • Ridiculous platitudes. “Life isn’t cruel because it gave us Will in the first place.” Like, no, it can be both. You can be grateful to have known someone at all and resent that they were taken away from you. Life is cruel in that death is completely arbitrary. At first I thought this might be an obvious queers-can’t-be-happy story, but it really isn’t about that. Yeah, Will is queer and is romantically with a man at the time of his death, but I feel like the story is more about dealing with grief than anything else. It isn’t an enraged queerphobe that kills Will, it’s just a random car accident. One could claim that the story is coded to make queers believe that they can’t be happy, but I don’t think that’s the devs’ intentions. Overall, I liked it. It’s short, but it gets an emotional narrative across nonetheless. I don’t recommend it to anyone that’s particularly sensitive to grief though, especially if they’ve been in a similar situation.
a simple point and click game to know the story of main character Will, his grandma, his ex-gf, current bf and a tragedy. nothing much for a game here just a visual novel, enjoy the story or not
Good effort, bad execution. I can see the effort that went into the game, and I believe it was developed in a very short period of time - about three years - however, I just cannot recommend it. Game-wise, it is boring. I don't mean it needs sword and sorcery action scenes and hack-and-slash, but it doesn't really have gameplay, which is a crucial part of a game; and the lack of basic level design understanding makes it notorious to go through. I agree with other reviewers on the fact the pacing is slow, however, with the general narrative, it might just be a good thing. Story-wise... I don't mean to sound rude, but not only it's cliche on top of another cliche, but also a very tiresome trope of "bury your gays" which isn't very appreciative. The devs did try to pull onto your heart strings, and I appreciate a good cry, but not here. The only thing that would make you sad was the music, and as for the story, well, it's been done before numerous times, and done better, unfortunately. I can see the effort, and I believe this is the first project of this team, but in all my good conscience, being completely and utterly honest with myself, I cannot recommend it.
Fragments of Him is a beautiful and emotional 2 hour click game. This game is really emotional too me and there's a lot of emotional hurt in this game. The emotional hurt on this game legit made me cry. I loved how you get to see the other characters perspective on things and how the characters grew up and matured more further on in the game. You see a lot of personal struggles from the whole cast including the main protagonist. All in all this was a beautiful 2 hour LGBTQ+ click game and I really like it! I definitely recommend trying this game out! Don't play this game if you can't handle sad depressing things or tragedies. I personally like these LGBTQ+ stories and they're really amazing! - signed by a Bisexual Male. Happy Pride Month everyone! :D <3
This game had me crying so hard What a tragically beautiful journey
It's a great story with good soundtrack managing to capture in a short amount a variety of topics , such as struggling and learning to deal with the loss of someone, learning to live with no regrets and feeling remorse. The main takeaway here is how much a person can change your life and that no matter what happens you should learn to cherish those memories you both share
I found this game kind of stilted and slow, with a lot of looking for things in silence. The environments were great, the narration definitely was fantastic, and as a queer person I thought the story was pretty good. (Hey other reviewers, it's not a "bury your gays" story if only one dies, come on.) I love walking sims and I love interactive fiction, but here it felt off-putting when the narration felt like a storybook, but each page turn took 10-60+ seconds of hunting for things to click on. I would've preferred to freely navigate while the narration was more automatic. I also thought the character models - while effective at conveying grief - lacked personality and made it hard for me to emotionally buy into what I was seeing. I was far more invested in what I was hearing than anything else.
love and cherish these people around you
