Sinopsis

Considering that this is the developer's second game, it does display a lot of potential. However, Xeodrifter does leave a lot to be desired. I believe the game excels the most at it's visuals, music and general atmosphere. The pixel art is generally very well done and each planet is very memorable, with very solid, albeit simple level design. But simple does not mean bad, as Xeodrifter does offer a nice, bite-sized metroidvania experience and the minimalist level design, while not groundbreaking, does not need to be in order to achieve it's objective of being a fun, little game. Where I think Xeodrifter fails is in it's controls and general gameplay loop. I have enjoyed the different power-ups you unlock after each boss and I like the foreground and background level design idea, similar to Wario Land on the Virtual Boy. The problem is that your character does not feel great to control. I personally don't like how floaty the astronaut feels to move around, especially whilst jumping because the fast speeds he can go to often result in running into enemies or other dangerous elements of the environment. My primary gripe with the gameplay is the blaster's upgrades. I have found the majority of them useless and only focused on the firerate and the zig-zag upgrades. The other upgrades make the game feel bloated and as if there is more content that what is really necessary. Not to mention the very repetitive boss fights, which are all visually the same and only add one new attack pattern to keep track of every time you come across another one. If you are looking for a small metroidvania experience or are trying to get into the genre, this game might be worth a try when it's on sale. It's a short game, so you won't waste much of your time if you don't enjoy it. However, it isn't particularly acceptional and too basic for me, personally.
This short 'vania couldn't outstay its welcome simple as it is

This game was not for me. The play it until the skill and luck line up is too frustrating for a guy like me with limited time for gaming. I need a higher effort-to-fun payoff.
The fullscreen issue is impossible to fix. I've tried everything and nothings worked. Looks like the devs aren't interested in fixing it either.
The game is cute in an 8-bits way. However, it has awful controls and design in general. The game runs differently depending on your screen refresh rate. Better be sure your is at 60Hz Movement feels very imprecise. From the start, you have access to four planets. Three are un-doable so you have to chose the right one. There, fighting the clunkiness, you'll eventually reach a check-point and a damage-sponge boss. If you reach with 1 health (from 3) the game makes you restart the fight from right before the boss with that 1 HP. The boss has only four moves but given how bad the controls are, it just feels stupid. Not worth the 0.97 EUR I paid for it during a sale.
I feel like there's a bug attached to screen refresh, because I've seen that before in something else. The game runs way too fast to actually be playable. A shame, because the music and art are nice.
I enjoyed this game so much. Granted I like Mutant Mudds Deluxe more but yeah I did like this game as well. Really glad I finally beated this game. I give this game 8/10. :)
