Sid Meier's Pirates! Gold Plus (Classic)

wow, such a disappointment, sticky sailing controls and fast moving ships make it nearly unplayable, no damage meter from gun fights is a major omission that is painful, the ease of which the big ships can sail away is also a bummer, so far its a complete waste of money and time, guess I should find the original game on GoG site, must be better than this mess

This is not the one I thought it was this is Way too old for my liking, I was thinking it was Pirates from 2004

A true classic. A great game that I remember playing long ago, I think on the SNES. Seems to hold up well, though there are a few foibles with a direct port (when the game had an anti-piracy feature that requires use of the game manual). Still, decent enough.

Pretty fun once you get the hang of it. Replayability is ok but after about 8 hours I've had my fill,

Pirates Gold is quite an interesting experience for me. You go on adventures to grow in rank through your starting country while looting gold, stealing cargo and ships, attacking a town, and more. I found looting to be very satisfying. Part of the reason it's so addictive is it takes work to earn gold, everything you do is risky meaning you could easily screw up and lose everything you have, but this fact makes me want to keep at it to see how much I can get before I lose. Another positive about the game is the variation. You will sail across the sea one moment, and sword fight the next. You will also fire at ships and attempt to board them, a similar mechanic has you attacking towns and i'm not a fan of this. The idea is using the wind to dodge shots from forts and get to land. But the wind changes at random. The idea is to leave if the wind isn't in your favor, but leaving can be just as hard which has got me killed. The graphics and sound design get the job done for a dosgame, though I found my crew yelling YO-HO-HO when they see a ship to be really annoying. Those are my biggest issues with the game. Now the steam version does have issues, it ran very slow to the point of being unplayable. You need to mess with the cycles in the config to fix this. This was a nice suprise. While not perfect, I personally had a blast. It was addictive and fun.

Played for 40 minutes and cannot do anything. Seems controls r too bugy I need to find the 1991 verison as this one is crap

Terrible - cannot play it on Mac or Steam deck. Loads on steam deck but cant even scroll the whole screen with cursor so makes it unplayable. Loved the game so extremely disappointed I cant play it though it says it is compatible with both.

Horrible controls, HORRIBLE screen tearing, the bottom half of the screen is basically just black. (on Linux, default Mint installation). Refunded. Shame, such a nice game. If you want the best experience (for free) just create your own DOSBox installation with files from archive.org. The SEGA Genesis version of this game is also great.
