its fun but how to explain it FIDK you figure it out
awesome arcade puzzle with the most beautiful pixel art! definitely a hidden gem worth checking out
nice mix of real-time and turn-based
I really wish Yacht Club would just make a proper sequel instead of derping about making these mediocre spinoffs.
Repetitive and generally uninteresting to me. The art is very nice though
It’s a puzzle game, not a great one either. It’s just okay and I think on that alone, it’s hard to recommend. Shovel Knight is so good, that I have to wonder what this fictitious character did to deserve being dropped into sub par miss after sub par miss. Presentation is great, look is great, music is great, but at the end of the day…it’s just middling gameplay wise at best.
Great, with a few drawbacks...
Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon is a very good game, with creative gameplay and nice visuals; however, it's far from perfect. While the issues with this game haven't bothered me to the point where I decided not to buy it, it's good to know what you're getting into.
Roguelike, NOT roguelite
While it's not a negative aspect of the game in my opinion, something that tends to deter people away, not just from this game, but in general, is the fact that this is a roguelike, not a roguelite. A common misconception, however, these are two separate things. In a rogueLITE, which is what most people would expect, you generally lose all the items that you obtained in your run, while keeping some sort of thing that can make you stronger for following runs, like XP to upgrade your character or some sort of permanent item. In a rogueLIKE, you lose absolutely everything, meaning your first run would be the same as your millionth. A disinterest towards roguelikes is becoming normal, so ensure you're okay with losing everything.
Far too expensive
This is my opinion, but the game is NOT worth 20 dollars! This is easily a 5-10$ game. I got it on sale, so I suggest you do the same, because 20$ is just too much for what the game offers.
Plays like a mobile game
This game plays better as a 'grab-and-go' sort of thing, like "one quick run while I'm in the waiting room". The game's UI and format would also translate very well in a vertical standpoint, seeing as only about a third of the info on screen is really necessary. It's a shame that there isn't a mobile version of the game, seeing as, like I previously stated, it plays better as a game meant for 'snack-size sessions' rather than having to sit down at your PC or console and put time into it (of course, that hasn't stopped me from grinding on it)
Final thoughts
While many would consider the gameplay too repetitive, I find the combination of puzzle and roguelike elements to be a very captivating mix. The game is cute and charming, and despite the flaws, it's definitely a must grab (WHEN ON SALE)! For how great the game is, it definitely deserves some more recognition!
