I am not a fan of giving poor reviews to games (this is my first). As someone who’s made games, I know countless hours go into the programming, art, music, etc. It’s not easy. However, with that being said, this game feels like it was someone’s final project for a college course. Specifically, by an art major. And I’m not trying to throw shade to artists, since this review is coming from one. Artists can be just as talented programmers as anyone else. But I’ll tell you why I think so: this game felt like the product of someone having to fulfill a technical requirement at their university and decided to take a game development class where they could apply their artistic skills and panicked when they had to create a game for their final project. Did they successfully load assets into the game? Yes. Can you move a character around? Yes. We’re there any bugs? No. (Well, arguably that’s a maybe since there are always bugs to be squashed). This is all the say that this game felt like a bare minimum to pass the requirements in order to pass a class. A+ on paper, D- in execution. And I know that these types of final projects can be well polished, given enough love and care. But this felt rushed and there hasn’t been any new content, at least, since last I checked. Honestly, I was so excited to play this because of the art and the cute concept of serving and preparing food and I cannot begin to describe my disappointment with the gameplay loop. There was nothing preventing me from purchasing the more expensive foods before the cheaper foods, which just totally destroys the point of any progression whatsoever. What’s the point?? I’m sorry, but this game has been living rent free in my head since I completed it back in September, and that is not a good thing. I’ve been taking this long racking my brain trying to figure out…. What the hell went wrong? Why did I feel slightly sick playing it? This could’ve been a great game, and it just wasn’t. Again, the art is adorable, the developer had something brewing here. I just wished it was more *developed*, if you will.
I'm kinda in the middle with this one. Shokudo Underworld feels strangely polished and unfinished at the same time. You get a hint of a story in the opening, but it never really develops. The game suggests you might be able to “liven things up” for the gloomy little creatures you gather resources from (who, by the way, live in what looks like a grubby basement dungeon) but that thread also goes nowhere. There’s no real way to improve the afterlife for any soul, despite the setup hinting at that possibility. Running the restaurant is cute, and the skill/item tree is fun at first, but upgrades come quickly and without much challenge. Once everything is unlocked (and that happens surprisingly fast) there’s not much left to do. Unless I missed something, you’re basically just serving food on repeat, and the loop gets repetitive pretty quickly (especially if you've figured out how to sell just a single item daily to make maximum $$$). Overall, it’s not a bad game. It’s charming enough, and works well as a short “boredom buster,” but there’s not a lot of depth, story, or replay value once the initial novelty wears off.
Toplamda 6 saat oynamışım. Bitirdim oyunu.
A hand drawn tale of being a chef in the underworld with unique and interesting ingredients to juggle. It's short, sweet, and casual with a restaurant reminiscent of what you'll expect in Ghibli's Spirited Away. The powers aren't substantial but there is a skill-tree to help a bit. The real struggle comes in the form of having too many ingredients and a "waiter" who does not clean or take orders, only delivers them. Recommended for those who like casual food management scenarios!
Very cute and chill game for a restaurant-management type. I had so much fun I had to rope one of my friends in to try it. You can build a strategy with how you unlock the upgrades and which menu you choose for each round. Honestly, very fun game and not that stressful.
