This is a game which I can tell has so much love poured into every aspect. Something I hadn't expected is quite how Ghibli-esque this game is, but that only makes me even fonder. The character designs and the tone of the story feels so wholesome and deeply enriching, with many natural intersections between the "people" in the neighbourhood and the player's journey. I found the forest sprites to be really charming, reminscent of the soot sprites or the kodama from Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke respectively, and the main animal characters are each very unique while still forming a cohesive cast of friends. Gameplay wise, the loop is very satisfying with enough versatility already that nothing feels too repetitive or forced. Upgrades feel earned but not too grindy with tangible improvements. It's not too complex while still remaining simple enough to fit into a "cozy" niche, especially as you upgrade your skills. The developer is actively engaged in trying to ensure as smooth and rewarding a gameplay experience as possible and I feel that effort translates into an early access game well worth its price tag. For players concerned about customisation, Tailside has a rather astonishing amount of aesthetic options for a game not yet fully released, and you can even import your own character sprite to replace the main character, plus it recently got steam workshop support which means it's only going to get more options for customisation in the future! I think if you're someone who likes cafe sims, someone who enjoys a cozy story and gameplay experience, and especially if you've been eyeing it for a while, I urge you to give Tailside a chance. I've been having a lot of fun with this game already and really am excited to see what its future holds.
I LOVE THE GAME SO MUCH! The moment I started playing, I fell in love with its warm pixel art, relaxing music, and adorable animal characters. I didn’t expect making coffee to become one of my favorite parts, but it really is. I love unlocking recipes and learning how to make different drinks, and I often find myself happily reading the customers’ conversations while making their drinks. I love that you can expand your menu to sell fresh pastries alongside your drinks, which makes the cafe feel even more complete. Decorating is another feature I spent way too much time on. I kept moving chairs, rotating plants, and trying different furniture combinations because I wanted every corner to feel just right. Being able to decorate both the indoor cafe and the outdoor terrace made it even more fun to create my own cozy little space. I also love how the game lets you collect plushies, and I placed them all over my bedroom, turning it into a warm and personal space. I even started imagining having my own real cafe like this, with a shop downstairs and a cozy home upstairs. I honestly think if this cafe existed in real life, I would never leave… LOL. I'd probably live there forever, surrounded by adorable animals, waking up upstairs and walking downstairs every morning to serve coffee, pastries, and chat with a cafe full of animal customers. Highly recommend this game to anyone who loves cozy games!
TL;DR: Playing it after work? Yes. Playing the game for the sake of gameplay? No.
I can see myself playing this once I get home from my job. It’s pretty chill and slow-paced. You can turn your brain off and enjoy a cozy evening. But if you want to play a game during the day and really get swallowed by the mechanics, I’d skip it.
Pros:
+ adorable art style + lots of furniture and decorations for customizing your cafe + collectibles. This includes rare furniture that you can’t get through the shop and plushies.
Cons:
- it's repetetive. The game is definitely chill and cute, but at some point, you realize that it’s actually boring. I got all the achievements by day 25, but honestly, it felt like a chore. Nothing happens during the day, you just keep serving the same drinks over and over. I got bored by day 12 but kept playing because I wanted to see if it would get more entertaining once I opened the terrace. Well, it didn’t. The problem is that nothing goes on throughout the day. There’s a "rush hour", but you just get a few more orders. It would be nicer if we had additional duties besides serving coffee and picking up empty cups - like mopping the floor, helping a customer choose a coffee, or resolving disputes between NPCs. What about special days with discounts or festivals? There are so many possibilities for interactions and events. - features are not as well-developed as I expected. The game introduces some nice ideas, but you quickly come to the conclusion that they don’t change the gameplay or affect much of anything. For example, you meet a bunny-baker who sells you pastries. So, besides serving coffee, now you can sell sweets. But how does it work? You just order the pastries and showcase them in your cafe. That’s it. No additional mechanics: you don’t warm them, cook them in the oven, or prepare them. You just get XP for displaying what you’ve bought. - character irrelevance. Every character is unique and prefers a specific type of coffee, and you can see their preferences in the character list. Does this somehow affect the gameplay? Again, no. This bunny likes lattes, and that’s it. It’s just information, but you don’t actually do anything with it. It would be way more fun if the characters weren't just static NPCs. It would be nicer if they had a specific craving for the day, and you had to guess what they wanted. For example, in Touhou Mystia's Izakaya, you meet important NPCs, learn their preferences (spicy, sweet, seafood, etc.), and have to decide what to serve them. But here, we just give them the coffee they ordered, and that’s it. I don’t even notice who ordered a drink - some important NPC or a random creature - because it simply doesn’t matter. - no side quests. You can trade items, but there’s nothing really interesting. It’s just a basic exchange. - lack of lore and world development. You read the newspaper every day, but there’s nothing interesting in it. It would be much better if it shared info about events happening outside the cafe. For example, a TV star visiting town, which could bring in more customers hoping to meet them. Instead, we just get news like "Wow, what a big spider I’ve seen today!". - minor bugs. I don’t really see this as a huge problem, it’s expected since Tailside is in early access. The dev updates the game frequently, so it’s not a big deal for me. Still, bugs do exist, so if you are easily annoyed by little issues, be prepared.
Again, if your goal is relaxing after a hard day, it’s a nice game.
But if you actually want to play a game, not just kill time, I can’t really recommend it yet. I understand the game is in EA and there is only one dev working on it, which is why I’d like to revisit it once it’s fully released. I’m keeping my eyes on it, but for now, I can’t recommend Tailside.
Add Russian language!
It hurts to not recommend, I wish there was a neutral option. I can tell alot of heart went into this! the gameplay is fun, the characters and art is super cute! I will absolutely come back to change my review when it comes out of early access or if it gets an update! Unfortunately it runs pretty badly. I am unsure if playing on steam deck makes it worse, but I really struggled getting it to register clicking when placing/selecting decor. Even using the touchscreen to try to go into mouse mode, it would often miss, double click, or deselect and put the item away instead. Decorating Latte's also sucks, on deck weather you use the touch screen or the analog sticks it's bulky and terrible. On top of that there are strange lag spikes, dialog will overlap and disrupt what I'm doing, but I can still move around and do things. I think sometimes this is intentional, but possibly again due to steam deck, it disrupts the controls and blocks me from doing some actions, meaning I have to stop to click proceed anyway. The biggest frustration for me was I completed the tutorial and the game promptly closed itself before I could save. It's the first time a game has done that on my deck, and I've played plenty of games with no deck support at all. Hopefully all these problems will be fixed in the official full release! I will be keeping an eye on it and try again now and then.
This game is just so super cute and cozy. I can't recommend it enough if you just wanna sit down and be cozy for a little while ^^
There are some games where, within the first few minutes, you already know that they are going to be exactly what you hoped they would be. Tailside: Cozy Cafe Sim was absolutely one of those games for me. I recently played another cosy café game called Pour Decisions, and while I could appreciate what that game was trying to do, it never quite delivered the relaxed café experience that I had been expecting. Tailside, on the other hand, gave me precisely that. This is a game that understands what I personally want from something calling itself cosy. You run your own little café, make drinks for your customers, decorate the space around you and gradually unlock more things as you progress. The big difference here is that everything feels wonderfully relaxed. There is no constant sense of pressure hanging over you. You are not fighting against awkward physics, worrying about spilling everything everywhere or being pushed into rushing through each order as quickly as possible. Instead, you can simply take your time. You prepare the drinks, add the different ingredients and even create pretty designs on the top of your lattes. It is one of those simple little interactions that could easily have been made stressful in another game, but here it just feels pleasant. You can work at your own pace, enjoy the process and make something nice without feeling as though the game is standing behind you tapping its watch. That relaxed approach carries through into the rest of the game too. Your café gradually becomes your own little space to shape and personalise. You can add furniture, plants and decorations, moving things around until everything feels right to you. Later on, there is even more space to work with, including an outside area and an upstairs section, giving you plenty of room to continue developing the café beyond the small starting area. For me, this is exactly the sort of progression that works perfectly in a cosy game. You start with something relatively simple and then slowly watch it grow around you. Nothing feels as though it is being thrown at you too quickly, but there is always another little thing to unlock, another area to improve or another item that might fit nicely into the café you are creating. The world itself is full of charm too. There are lovely characters to talk to, along with adorable forest sprite visitors who come into the café. These little touches give the game so much personality and help the café feel like part of a wider place rather than simply being a room where customers appear, order a drink and disappear again. I particularly liked the local newspaper. Each day, it gives you little reports and stories connected to what is happening and how you are progressing. It is such a small feature, but it adds an enormous amount of character to the experience. It makes it feel as though your café and your actions actually exist within this little world and that things are happening around you. And honestly, the more I played, the more I found myself smiling. Tailside is not trying to create tension. It is not trying to test how quickly you can serve a queue of impatient customers. It is not trying to punish you for taking your time. It simply lets you enjoy running a charming little café, making drinks, meeting characters and decorating the place exactly how you want it. That sounds like such an obvious thing for a cosy café game to do, but so many games add systems that slowly chip away at that relaxed feeling. Tailside never did that to me. Everything I encountered felt as though it belonged in the type of experience I had hoped for when I started playing. The pace was right. The atmosphere was right. The characters were charming. The decorating was enjoyable. Making the drinks was satisfying without becoming frustrating. It genuinely ticked every single box for me. I normally try very hard to find something that I would change or improve in every game I play, because no game is perfect and there is almost always something worth mentioning. With Tailside, though, I am struggling. I genuinely cannot think of a single thing that negatively affected my time with it. That does not mean that everybody will automatically love it. This is a deliberately slow and relaxed experience, and somebody looking for a demanding management game or a café simulator filled with pressure and optimisation may find it too gentle. But for the audience that Tailside is clearly aimed at, I think that gentleness is one of its greatest strengths. Cosy game fans are going to absolutely adore the pace of this one. They are going to enjoy making the drinks, chatting with the characters, meeting the little forest visitors and slowly turning the café into a space of their own. I certainly did. Tailside: Cozy Cafe Sim gave me exactly the experience I had hoped it would give me. It was charming, relaxing and genuinely lovely to spend time with. I went into it wanting a cosy café game where I could simply slow down, make some nice drinks and enjoy creating my own little space. That is exactly what I got. And sometimes, that is all a game needs to do. Absolutely loved this one.
not my cup of tea, but undeniably a good, well made game. love the cute, cozy art style. 7.8/10
I enjoyed my first 30 minutes of the game, however after that the game has continuously lagged for some reason, rendering it unplayable. I have tried closing the game and re-opening it which hasn't fixed my issue. I'd really appreciate a developer response regarding this considering that the game is still in early access.
Tailside: Cozy Cafe Sim is a relaxing café management and life simulation game developed and published by Coffee Beans Dev that embraces comfort, creativity, and community over competition and pressure. Built around the idea of creating a welcoming café in a charming world populated by friendly villagers and adorable animal visitors, the game offers an experience designed to help players unwind while gradually building their dream business. Through a combination of café management, decoration, progression systems, and light storytelling, Tailside delivers a wholesome adventure that perfectly captures the appeal of the cozy gaming genre. The game begins with a simple premise: operate a small café and transform it into a beloved gathering place for the local community. While the objective sounds straightforward, the charm comes from how every aspect of the experience is designed to feel rewarding rather than stressful. Players are encouraged to take things slowly, experiment with customization, and enjoy the everyday routines that define life in Tailside. There are no harsh penalties, overwhelming deadlines, or punishing mechanics demanding constant attention. Instead, the game focuses on creating a comfortable environment where progress feels natural and satisfying. At the center of the experience is the café itself. Players spend much of their time preparing drinks, serving customers, and improving the establishment through thoughtful upgrades. Coffee-making serves as a core activity, with new recipes and options becoming available as the game progresses. Brewing beverages feels simple yet enjoyable, creating a satisfying routine that mirrors the relaxing atmosphere the game consistently aims to achieve. The process never becomes overly complicated, allowing players to focus on the pleasure of running a welcoming café rather than mastering complex systems. Customization is one of the strongest aspects of Tailside. The game provides a large selection of decorative items, furniture pieces, and design options that allow players to personalize their café according to their own tastes. Every new item unlocked expands creative possibilities and encourages experimentation. Whether creating a rustic countryside coffee shop, a vibrant social hub, or a peaceful retreat filled with plants and cozy furnishings, players have considerable freedom to shape the environment. The ability to redesign and refine the space over time gives the progression system a strong sense of purpose. Beyond the main café area, additional spaces can be customized as well. Personal living areas, outdoor sections, and other locations gradually become extensions of the player's creativity. This broader focus on customization helps create a stronger sense of ownership and makes the entire experience feel more personal. The game understands that for many players, designing a beautiful and comfortable space can be just as rewarding as achieving business success. Progression is handled in a gentle and accessible manner. As days pass and goals are completed, players unlock new recipes, decorative objects, customer types, skills, and customization options. Every reward feels meaningful because it contributes directly to either creativity or gameplay variety. Rather than overwhelming players with endless systems from the start, the game introduces new content steadily, ensuring that there is always something new to look forward to without making the experience feel complicated. The world itself contributes significantly to the game's appeal. Tailside is populated by a collection of friendly villagers and charming creature visitors who bring life to the café. Customers arrive with their own personalities and preferences, creating the feeling that the business is becoming an important part of the local community. Watching familiar faces return and seeing new visitors discover the café creates a rewarding sense of growth that extends beyond simple financial success. A particularly interesting feature is the daily newspaper system. Small stories and local events are delivered through newspapers, gradually revealing more about the world and the characters who inhabit it. These narrative elements provide context and personality without interrupting the relaxed pace of the gameplay. Instead of relying on a large overarching storyline, the game uses these smaller moments to create a sense of connection with the town and its residents. One of the most appealing aspects of Tailside is its dedication to stress-free gameplay. Many management simulators challenge players with strict efficiency requirements, financial pressure, or difficult balancing acts. Tailside deliberately moves in the opposite direction. The game encourages experimentation and creativity while removing many of the frustrations commonly associated with business simulations. This philosophy allows players to focus on enjoying the process rather than worrying about failure. The inclusion of a sandbox mode further reinforces this approach. Players who simply want to decorate, customize, and create without restrictions can do so freely. This mode transforms the game into a creative playground where imagination becomes the primary objective. For fans of interior design and customization systems, this feature significantly increases the game's long-term appeal. Visually, Tailside embraces a charming pixel-art aesthetic that perfectly complements its cozy atmosphere. The environments are colorful and inviting, while character designs are expressive and memorable. Every location feels carefully crafted to evoke warmth and comfort. The visual style avoids excessive complexity in favor of clarity and personality, making the world feel approachable and welcoming. The soundtrack deserves special mention for its contribution to the overall experience. Gentle melodies accompany daily activities, helping establish a peaceful atmosphere that makes it easy to become immersed in the routine of café life. The music never demands attention but consistently enhances the relaxing tone of the game. Combined with subtle environmental sounds, it creates an experience that feels comforting from beginning to end. Another notable strength is the game's emphasis on player expression. Features such as character customization, decorative freedom, and even support for custom content allow players to leave their own mark on the world. These options help ensure that no two cafés feel exactly the same, increasing replayability and encouraging creativity. Tailside: Cozy Cafe Sim ultimately succeeds because it fully understands the appeal of cozy gaming. Rather than relying on complicated mechanics or high-stakes challenges, it focuses on creating a pleasant space where players can relax, create, and enjoy gradual progression. Its blend of café management, customization, charming characters, and peaceful worldbuilding results in an experience that feels genuinely comforting. For players who enjoy life simulations, creative building systems, and management games that prioritize relaxation over difficulty, Tailside: Cozy Cafe Sim offers a delightful and rewarding experience. It is a game that celebrates small achievements, personal creativity, and the simple joy of serving a good cup of coffee in a warm and welcoming community. Rating: 9/10
