Bought it early on before they switched to having to rebuy every year. That should be illegal. Dont reward shady companies.
Dev has switched to some paywalled updates system for the app, going from a perpetual license to a subscription-based model that costs $50 a year to get the latest patches. Had this since 2021 purchased assuming it would always just be usable for me, but seeing as how I'll have to keep dumping money into this app forever if I chose to use it, I'll definitely avoid using it in my workflow in the future.
It's good, I use it, but as soon as I buy it (70$ btw) they release a new, nearly identical "MAX" product for the same full price. The "discount" price they offer for those who got screwed this exact way is still half price, so Shapelab gets to celebrate scamming me out of triple digits for one product. Decent program, but man do I feel utterly scammed.
This is a good sculpting program. Maybe the best if you struggle like I am with pen tablets. I will send a thumbs up, however, this 2025 update, which I won't buy, we need to talk about that. I want your product to be successful, company to grow and the team to make great money, but amount of things you added there is too underwhelming to open up my wallet. HDRI and kit bashing I can do these things in blender just fine. align object to the ground, everyone can live without it. grab object and the scene, these things don't even add anything important to the table. It's nice you guys are keeping your perpetual licence promise, but if you want me throw cash down bring in more useful tools like simulations, things that'd help creating micro details, or go creative and create a vr unwrapping method or something. Just please bring in actual solutions, and I'll buy the next iteration. See you in 2026.
I've waited a year or so to purchase this software. I finally really needed it for work. Wonderful so far! A little expensive with the subscription as well but I will always happily pay for good tools that help make my life easier. I'm an electrical engineer. I use Fusion 360 for all of my CAD work. I was looking for some software that would allow me to easily clean up and modify my 3D scans. I needed to stay away from software that was too similar to Fusion 360, so I didn't start overwriting my muscle memory for navigating my CAD software. ( I use a lot of different software so I'm running out of brain space) This is an absolute game changer for me. The VR environment allows me to intuitively use many of the tools provided by Shapelab. I've never used a mesh sculpting software until Shapelab. Within a few minutes I had my 3D scan imported and I was making great progress on the clean up. So much better than my scanner's software! I brought a Youtube screen into the Shapelab environment so I could listen to some relaxing music, I enabled a nice environment to work in. Amazing. I love that I could quickly scale the model as big as I needed, to clean up small imperfections in the scan. Using full arm movement to smooth and fix textures felt like I was carefully sanding body filler on a vehicle or sculpting a giant statue. This was truly a beautiful and relaxing experience. I spent 3 hours perfectly cleaning up the 3D scan and I'm actually excited for the next one. Cleaning up 3D scans is great but I'm really looking forward to taking time for making custom mesh models as well. Thank you for the great software!
ShapeLab VR is a great tool, but for a more complete production workflow we really need Face Groups / Polygroups, a Quad Remesher that respects those groups, radial symmetry, and curve tools. These would make hard-surface sculpting, clean retopology, panel separation, repeated circular details, and controlled forms much easier. Can you consider adding these features?
I initially purchased ShapeLab through the Meta Store. Unfortunately, the desktop mode only worked if the headset was turned on first and the mode was selected within the app – which was quite limiting. Thankfully, the ShapeLab support team was very friendly and offered me a Steam key. With this, I can now use the program in both desktop and VR mode without having to turn on my headset first. That made a big difference for my workflow. The program itself is very intuitive and clearly structured. As an experienced sculptor, I was able to find my way around the core functions very quickly. Some time was needed to get familiar with the more advanced tools, but that’s to be expected. In my opinion, the software offers all the essential features as well as a good range of advanced options to create sculpts and further edit them in other programs if needed. Overall, I find the price-performance ratio to be excellent. For a relatively low cost, you get a fully functional and beginner-friendly sculpting tool that supports both desktop and VR use simultaneously.
Don't even think about it. I wouldn't even buy the software if it was $10. This app has been nothing but a waste of time (and money if you don't refund it before you can't) and the software does not work. Sculpting sucks, you cannot start sculpting without the grid disappearing. Also, the tools, let's talk about the tools - NONE of them work, and when they do, it's always in a way that inconveniences the user more. Go learn Blender, not this half-assed POS.
I've had Shapelab in my library for years, too afraid to dig into it. It felt daunting to me after having tried another unrelated similar software that kept crashing on me in the most inconvenient times leading to some very frustrating sessions. But I've had a dream of making a Scrooge McDuck model so I finally decided to give it a go. And I have to say, I am very, VERY positively surprised by this software. The workflow is a lot easier than I expected and working in VR is much more comfortable than I thought it would be. Also Shapelab hasn't crashed on me a single time! (phew!) So I basically finished my Scrooge model in about a day or two and I am beyond thrilled with it. Now to print it in "gold" PLA. :D Highly recommend Shapelab. Fantastic software for sculpting.
