Gorgeous pixel art. Intense, blazing fast battles. An epic adventure. This is the must-play retro indie JRPG built for the modern era.

It pains me to give a negative review to a lovingly handcrafted game such as this, but I'm obligated to warn you it's not fun. -It falls victim to the classic JRPG blunder of having way too many tedious, repetitive fights. -There's not a single interesting strategic decision. Abilities are unlocked on a fixed schedule with no customization, and party composition never changes. -The story is generic and doesn't compel me to keep playing.
JRPGs often get bogged down in unnecessary complexity and padding, Shadows of Adam stands out as a beacon of concise and engaging storytelling. This retro-style gem is a testament to the power of focused game design, delivering a narrative that is both emotionally resonant and expertly paced. From the moment you start playing. Every scene, every conversation, and every plot twist serves a purpose, propelling the story forward with a sense of urgency and momentum. The game's combat system is turn-based and strategic, with a unique AP system that rewards careful planning and execution. Battles are challenging but never feel overwhelming, and the sense of satisfaction you get from developing strats for bosses is great! There is not any excessive exposition or tedious backtracking. The game's world is meticulously crafted, with a clear sense of history and lore that feeds the narrative. No fetch quests for the sake of time padding, no "oh he's in the OTHER castle" bull, just good proper story and gameplay.
Short and sweet, Shadows of Adam is an easy recommendation for a solid, lean RPG that you can finish in a few sittings.
A terrific game for the price, would highly recommend if you crave some turn based combat. It's somewhat similar to Final Fantasy Mystic Quest for the SNES, but with more characters and options.
If you're really looking for a throwback JRPG, this is just fine. There's some interesting light puzzling to find hidden treasures and some varied skills among the party members. The story and dialogue don't hold up their end, however.
Oh man, I really wanted to like this game but the juvenile dialogue really kills the story and character development. The developer is clearly inspired by games like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI, but fumbled on the execution of what made those games great. Overall, it's a disappointment.
This is a simple short RPG that i believe targets a younger audience as some of the writing/ conversations between the characters are kiddy. Nevethless, i am surprise that a normal mobs can be quite hard and you cannot keep using the same attackes for every mobs. Can be finished in less than 20 hrs if you did not go around performing extra stuffs. Purchase on a sale. I give it a 7/10.
some kinda pooor rpg maker like.
I was looking for a little palate cleanser RPG to play between some other lengthier games I've been playing. And seeing people call this title a "short and sweet RPG" made me want to give it a try. I did not enjoy this game at all. I played it all the way through, and was bored the whole time. The story wasn't interesting at all, I didn't care about the characters or anything going on the entire time. The fighting system was so repetitive and annoying, the only saving grace in this game was there are no random encounters. I was also really annoyed I had to buy the DLC in order for this game to work on the Steam Deck (yeah, the base game doesn't load on SD, but when you have the DLC it works.) The DLC really should have just been content they added into the game, it wasn't anything that added value to the game, just some lame filler. I was looking forward to playing the next RPG this developer has made "Quartet," but after playing this game, I'll be passing.
