Love this game, generally love the SGS series. However, my game has been stuck with a game breaking bug. I'm aware that the devs are working on sorting but until they are sorted, I cannot recommend yet.
I've known this game since the old cardboard counters days of Avalon Hill. It was nice picking this title up during the Steam Summer Sale so I add a new era to my wargaming collection. I heard a lot of good things about SGS's work on turn based warfare so I am trying it out. After three run through's of the Canada invasion which is the shortest vignette I feel capable as Commander of the Continental Army to meet the British in other regions. The tutorials are useful but getting in there and just following the in game suggestions and experimenting with the combat system will work well enough. I love the history lesson, Art is fantastic, taking an Indian village bug seems to have been fixed. Moving counters in and out of stacks is a bit testy sometimes but no major complaints. I see many hours of Continental warfare!
This is my first SGS game. I have spent over 3 hours on it and I have no idea how to play the game. The tutorials are for people who know the system. There are no useful YouTube play through videos you can follow-along with. I have heard if I bought another game that is easier, I could figure this out. Why not create proper documentation? How much money do I have to spend to learn how to play this game. My advice: if you don't know the system, pass on this game.
I've been playing wargames for many years and this has been a most frustrating experience. I really wanted to like this game but the control interface is painfully bad. Half the time units wont move where you want them to, refuse to fight enemy in the same region or are simply impossible to control in any meaningful manner, and does the game tell you where you are going wrong..... no, nothing in the way of feedback or guidance... very frustrating. Have tried two different scenarios to learn the game but have now given up until it gets a dramatic improvement. The first scenario was an obvious win for the British (me) and achieved all of the stated objectives, but, at game end the result was announced as a draw 33-3 - obviously a bug that should really have been picked up in testing. In the second game my forces flatly refused to move North and advance on Quebec. It appeared as though one enemy unit, in the same region as my major stack, was stopping forward movement, but I could find no way to move on, nor fight this enemy unit. This went on for around five turns until game end when the result was again declared a draw. Altogether, a deeply flawed game that I would love to return, but cannot, as I have had the misfortune to waste five hours on it, in the spirit of 'giving it a good go'. I will not be buying another game from this series (and perhaps this company) again unless something changes.
I was looking forward to playing this game and learning the mechanics. But I guess this game isn't for me. The manual is spread out across several small tutorials available on a web page but in game, the mechanics just didn't click for me. A lot of mechanics are not explained well in-game with no pop up hints or anything else to help you figure out how things are working. Combat happens quickly and I have no idea if I am succeeding or getting my butt kicked. Other users seems to have figure most of the mechanics but I guess this game just wasn't for me. Some sound-effects in game would have lent some semblance of familiarity with other strategy games. eg. such as having a sound play when clicking on a unit. Devs seemed to have had some roadmap laid out after release but feels like a lot of bugs have not been addressed and probably won't be at this point.
Another amazing game! Please do a Roman campaign in the future.
This is absolutely the spiritual successor to Birth of America. The card/dice driven combat and events keep the games fresh without grossly altering the historical narrative. The AI could be better, and the manual could be... existent, but those are fairly small gripes. A classic wargame experience without any setup.
