About
SGS Spain at War is a complete standalone game that covers the Spanish Civil war from July 1936 to April 1939.

The game covers the whole war from 18th July ’36, using a system of weekly turns. As the Nationalist you have to bring to the Peninsula your powerful units of the Africa’s army and take control of the key cities to force the Republic to surrender. As the Republican player you must delay the initial progress of the enemy and meanwhile start building the Popular Army in order to be ready to face your opponent’s regular army, and in particulars its veteran units.
Spain at War is a very detailed game where you can find every single unit that took part in the conflict, Falangist and Carlist militias, each unit of the Africa’s Army, dozens of Republican militia units, the Italian aerial squadrons with their historical names and images, all the warships of both side, the International Brigades battalions, Basque, Asturian or Catalan units, Anarchists militia units, the Soviet T-26, I-15 Chatos and I-16 Moscas, the Bf109 of the Kondor Legion and much more!
The players have to use wisely their industrial capacity to spend their resources in new units or in replacements for weakened units to avoid their destruction. But it is not possible to rebuild every lost unit or to replace it, like the case of ships or elite units (e.g. Legion). Cards play also a key role in the game as they bring some variation in the different fields, such as reinforcements, economics, diplomacy, politics, popular support and, above all, combats.
The player will also find in the game nice historical events that bring ‘chrome’ to the game and helps you to feel the historical moment represented.
The knowledge, experience and background of the designer of España: 1936 and Battles for Spain, Miguel Santacruz, has been essential in creating and supporting the development of this game, assisted by the SGS team. A lot of bibliography and data was collected to support the research needed to develop this game so that it feels accurate.
The game will contain a major campaign scenario covering the entire war, as well as another (shorter) scenario based on a scenario where the Republic still holds out in 1939.
We plan to also provide the players with interesting options to explore potential what-if situations.

Historically exciting, with a classic gameplay – but not something you can play casually. I've played a few SGS games before and knew roughly what to expect. Spain at War, however, gripped me more than others – not because of the game mechanics (which are solid and familiar), but because of the theme. The Spanish Civil War was complicated. It wasn't just about left or right, but about a country that was completely torn apart – between city and country, church and state, monarchy, republic, and revolution. The game itself doesn't explain this in detail, but the many factions, events, and locations give you a good sense of how complex it all was. Of course, SGS isn't a political simulator, but a wargame. But that's precisely what makes it interesting: You realize there's a lot more to it, and if you delve a little into history, every decision in the game immediately feels much more important. Conclusion: If you like classic hex-based warfare, you'll quickly find your way around. Anyone interested in history will inevitably read up on the background – and that’s exactly what makes the game special for me. Recomendable.
I eagerly awaited this release to be severely disappointed in the results. One Campaign scenario in the game and only viable for play as the Republican player. One other scenario, again, completely not viable for Nationalist play. Ai is insufficient as an attacker (typical in most games) but this severely hampers play as the Republican player in the two measly scenarios provided. Yet no Nationalist player balanced scenarios were provided (and the Republican AI is horrible as a defender). This was a poor value for the money, and a very disappointing release. This was underdeveloped and should not have been released.
Completely unbalanced game. Defeated The Republicans in 32 moves playing as the Nationalists, which is no where near the 150 moves allowed in the Grand Campaign. The Republican morale is set too low at 1 instead of 2 and they flee after the first round of combat. I cannot recommend purchasing this game at present until the low morale is fixed.
This is a great game and a faithful depiction of a crucial prequel to WW2. There are some initial issues to overcome in understanding the UI, and some explanations of mechanics and game events are not always clear. But if you give it the effort, you are rewarded. The two sides, the Republicans and Nationalists, play very differently. The Nationalists start out with the more professional army, including a steady flow of colonial troops from North Africa, and also benefit from significant assistance and troops from Fascist Italy (Corps of Volunteers) and Nazi Germany (Condor Legion)- Mussolini and Hitler viewed Spain as a crucial proving ground for their respective military. The Nationalists benefit from the loyalty of most of the regular army and police (the Guardia Civil), and also incorporate troops from factions like the Carlists (the Requetes), who are followers of a rival Spanish monarchy, and the Spanish Falange, the home-grown fascist movement. The Nationalists though are the "rebels" here, as they are rising up against the government. The Republicans start out with a more numerous, mostly untrained, and very polyglot force reflecting the wide range of ideologies supporting the government of the Second Spanish Republic. There are some regular army forces that stayed loyal, some militarized police units (Guardia de Asaltos) and the regular navy stays mainly loyal. But the bulk of the forces are hastily raised but enthusiastic militias following various labor movements and political parties, from moderate to Socialist, Communist and Anarchist. There are also ethnic nationalists from the Basque, Catalan and Galician regions who, though allies with the Republic, are more concerned with defending their own areas. The Republicans also get reinforcements from the famous International Brigades, volunteers from around the world organized under the Comintern that included some famous people like Andre Malraux, George Orwell and Ernest Hemingway. The Republicans also have to make some crucial decisions on who to ask for foreign assistance - do they stick with the Western powers like France who may be slow to act due to the arms embargo? Or go with Uncle Joe Stalin and the Soviet Union, who can provide some excellent equipment but at a political price of alienating the Republic's anti-Communist foreign allies? Game play at the start is a chaotic land grab, as the Nationalists race to take as much as they can before the Republic manages to build regular forces out of the masses of militia. The front lines snake across Spain, creating many salients and opportunities for flanking. Players are making strategy and creating armies at the same time. The air war is faithfully handled, with both sides building up fleets of fighters, fighter-bombers and bombers, with much dependent on foreign intervention and supply. The initiative swings back and forth in the air, as the Nationalist initial advantage can be blunted by the Republicans receiving more modern planes from France or the Soviet Union. Then the initiative swings back to the Nationalists, as Italy and Germany send more modern planes. The naval war is modeled, but somewhat of a sideshow since the action is a civil war on land and the Republicans had the loyalty of most of the Spanish Navy. My experience comes via Play By Email with a human opponent. Generally, I think the more experienced player should take the Republican side, since I think the learning curve is a bit steeper there. Player skill, in understanding the game mechanics, armies and terrain makes a big difference. But my sense is that, between two closely matched players, the PBEM game is very well-balanced. Both sides can have opportunities to attack, there are multiple fronts with their own operational problems to solve, and tactics can shift as the armies themselves evolve over time. I would note that I think the negative comments come mainly from playing AI. It is really tough to design good war game AI, and especially tough in a simulation of the Spanish Civil War, given how winding the fronts were. So if you really want to get mileage out of this, recommend finding a human opponent for PBEM. All in all, I heartily recommend this game to those looking to experience the drama and historical flavor of this terrible civil conflict.
Totalmente recomendable. Algún pequeño bug que seguro que arreglarán.
This is the newest iteration of the SGS system, and I am enjoying it a great deal. It has been refined over past versions, and is so much more enjoyable to play. The difficulty I encounter has nothing to do with the game mechanics, and everything to do with my own prejudices. I cannot even imagine playing the Franco regime. I MUST play the freedom loving Republicans. To have any chance of success in this war, the Republic must, MUST play a defensive, smart game. That is a tall order for me. I am not great at defensive play over a long game. Therefore, the real challenge is entirely internal. I have just started a game that goes 150 turns, and so far the attention to detail and historical accuracy is beyond reproach! I'm not a professional historian, but I have studied the Spanish Civil War my entire adult life. I can recommend this game wholeheartedly.
