When it comes to classic shoot'em-up games, I'm not excactly an expert-in-field. But when it comes to a puzzle games, you can pretty much call me and amateur-proffesional-ish player, who simply has to prove himself that he's not as stupid as everybody's telling him. And then comes Galacide. Game that made me feel as a man with not so bright future in action puzzle games. Now, let's scrap all of that and focus on the game itself, which made very interesting enterance by its combination of both said genres, being classic shoot'em-up and puzzle games. You, as the commander of the greatest ship in the known universe*, have to move yourself trough great number of enemies and vast network of... colorful... nice... blocks... that will make your life a living hell. Choosing from several ships offering different abilities, your main goal will be to get from left side, to the right side. Pretty simple, ey? WRONG! If this game would offer the same sort of repetitive gameplay as most of other shoot'em-up games, I wouldn't honestly like it. But this game does offer something twisting to the known mechanics - a "quick-thinking tactics of puzzlers". And that, ladies and gentlemen, is what makes Galacide so very unique game using so very known genres and gameplay. During your missions, you, along with different types of enemies, will encounter a lot of colorful blocks... "block-ing" in open space and especially in (and) your way. In order to destroy them, you must line up at least four block of the same color. AKA Bejeweldy Tetris (tm). So not only that, you must also awake your mad matrix skills and don't get shot by enemies. You have to literally think about your next move in miliseconds. Otherwise your career will go to the bottom on the unkwnown faster than that one of Hayden Christensen after Star Wars Episode II and his compaining about sand. From the left side, only death awaits. Around you, only block. On the right side, only enemies and "scraps" which can be used to create new block and ultimately destroy them. Navigating yourself through very narrow and tight spaces around blocks, picking up those scraps you need, shooting them, destroying them and also shooting enemies and evading their shots. THAT is what makes Galacide a Galacide. THAT is what makes Galacide a unique games. THAT is what makes Galacide a game you will either love or hate. Or both. This game offers not only a campaing, made up from 7 missions (each lasting around 10-20 or more minutes), but also Endless Play and Puzzle Play. Which, as you might've guessed, is puzzle-only mode. And here, you find 25 levels divided into 5 categories, each aimed to test your brain in different manners. But nonetheless, in every level, you'll have to shoot scraps and destroy blocks (bits, as they are called in game). This game also offers something extra, which you'll have to discover yourselves. When it comes to an audiovisual of the game, there's pretty much nothing bad you can say. Sounds are nice, music is thrilling, graphic itself is very colorful and pretty and animations along with effects are superb. The game also has minimum of bugs, but it may get repetitive over time. Especially when the levels are so long, it just gets "not-so-exciting" after a while. If you are fan of both shoot'em-up games and puzzle games, this is sort of must have game. For that price, it's a deal of the year. But if you don't like shoot'em-up games or match-four types of game that much, you should probably wait for either a sale or just skip this game. Galacide is really for only few "chosen" people. But it doesn't make this game any bad. It's fun. It's challanging. It's interesting and nice. What else to say? Galacide awaits you. Pros: + Fun and challanging gameplay combining classic shoot'em-up with logic match-4 elements + Very nice audiovisuals + Minimum bugs + Up to 4-player coop + Puzzle mode and Endless mode + Price Cons: - It may get repetitive after a while, especially "thanks" to long levels - More diversity in gameplay mechanics could be nice too - It may be hard for some players Rating: 7/10 -- moderately above average *may not be true. Depending on type of player you are.
Final Score: 36/50 Very good game with a unique twist on the shoot 'em up genre. Warning: Shoot 'Em Up fans must try this game. If you are not a fan of the Shoot 'Em Up Genre, then please move on. Galacide creates a very good twist on the classic genre Shoot 'Em Up. Not only will you have your own arsenal of guns and ships to choose from, you also have to think quick in order to solve puzzles. The classic color match "bubble" genre like Candy Crush or Bubble With is mixed with side scrolling shoot them up games like R. The controls were very tough to get use to at first. The Z button shoots your gun while the X button is used for the gems. I found myself constantly sucking in the gems then farting them out behind me. I eventually got the controls down pact and it became a lot more smoother. I reccomend playing with a supported Xbox360 Controller. The graphics were clean and so far the enemy variety is decent for an early access game. The endless mode is fun and challenging. The multiplayer option is fun and game supports up to 4 players, but only tested with two. Basic game and graphic options. Please do not buy with out first understanding this is an early access game. No special skin options or anything that would set it out visually different than trailer. Category Breakdown: Graphics/Style = 8 Creativity = 9 Gameplay = 6 Controls = 7 Functionality = 6 Thank you for reading my review! Final verdict, if you are a Shoot 'Em Up fan, buy this game, if not then wait for it to flush out and grow a little.
I don't like giving Galacide a thumbs down. The game is well made and I saw no broken mechanics, glitchy design or engine crashes/malfunctions. Had this been a game I made, i'd be proud of selling it on Steam as well. The problem is that I found the game so boring, that I didn't want to launch it again - which is unfortunate since i love Shmups and combat puzzle games like Puzzle Quest. I was ultimately not entertained by the maze management with only three colors, with the shoot 'em up mechanics largely taking a back seat. Long maze sequence and repetitive music made the experience boring for me, despite the action of having to juggle "puzzle pieces" along with dozens of enemies attempting to hurt you with contact damage and occasional shot patterns. The game might be better served with the puzzles segments being shorter and less frequent - but I honestly don't know what will make the game more fun for me.
I can't offer much constructive criticism - most store page reviews seem Positive. I might enjoy this game more on a harder difficulty or in co-op, but I'm not compelled to go back unless a friend wants to co-op with me perhaps. $7 seems like a very fair price for what is available -and it's clear other people are able to enjoy this game.
Update! 7/28 - Launch Day! First Let me congratulate Puny Human on a successful Early Access and the Wonderful game Galacide! I've gotten a chance to play some more of Galacide since the initial review and wanted to update my review. This game is still great and now with the polish through-out early access it has gotten even better. Now with an overarching single player mode where you select your levels from the 'starmap' (there's even a little story to go along with your puzzle solving). I also wanted to point out the tutorial/introduction level, it walks you through the mechanics of the game very well, even introducing what I think is a new mechanic that allows you to morph bits and change their color (this is great especially if you get trapped in a wall of puzzle pieces). So now in the finished version of Galacide you have 6 worlds of the campaign mode, an endless mode, and the newly introduced Puzzle Mode, which is premade puzzles where you must clear all the blocks from to complete the stage. With all this added content I still highly recommend checking out Galacide as a unique, fun, and challenging Puzzle Shooter. ************************************************************************************************************** Galacide is a side-scrolling shooter puzzle game, full of action and challenge. https://youtu.be/-FG87bSfi7g The goal here in Galacide, is to blast through enemies and collect the bits they drop, which are different colored squares. As your ship moves to the right of the screen you must shoot these bits at a moving wall of other bits to make matches of 4 or more to clear your path. So not only are you dodging enemies and bullets, you must also try to clear the puzzle to fly onto the next zone. The game keeps the pace with some great music, and design. Meshing the shooter and puzzle genres together in a fun and challenging way. There are three of four ships available in the Early Access, each with it's own unique blaster and tiers. As you progress your weapon tiers up. So, for instance, the start ships tiers are. Single laser, tri-laser and a giant death beam of death murder (totally not what it's called) which shoots a giant laser across the screen. It destroys just about everything. Currently, all that's available is the training map and an endless mode, however, those are enough for me to recommend this game. With the promise of a campaign mode and additional ships, this game will be a fun challenge for puzzle seekers out there. To progress through a level, the player is required to match 4 "bits" of a color, while avoiding the barrage of enemy ships and lasers. This experience is mixed up by a bossfight every now and then, which is a pure shoot'em up experience. Gameplay: This genre mixup seems unusual, and it often ends up feeling like the game would've been better off focusing more onto one aspect. I have finished the storymode within just two hours, and after that I felt like I've seen it all. Whilst the gameplay generally works, it doesn't really work as a shoot'em up experience, since the pace of the game is forced to be rather slow, since the player needs to manage destroying the puzzle bits in front of him. Enemies are more often than not blending right in with the floating bricks and bits, leaving the player to just randomly fire all the time, which for me at least, proved as quite an effective approach. This segways into a big problem of this game: The screen is too busy. Now, if you've ever played a shoot'em up, you know that screens tend to get busy, but the issue here is, that you're only to avoid 50% of the debree flying towards you, since the other 50% are required for solving the puzzles. The only real taste of shoot'em up I got, was the bossfights inbetween the levels. And I have to say, whilst not too challenging, they were fun. Throwing in different ideas (whilst still often being the bullethell experience) they are more creative and fast paced. Both aspects (puzzle/shoot'em up) work, but none of them feels fully fledged. Offering variety is generally difficult with puzzlegames, this game does it through it's shoot'em up bosses and different usable ships. It also offers a variety of modes, including a puzzle only and endless mode. Pros: +Variety in ships/modes/genres +Fun bossfights Cons: -Lack of focus on either genre -Too busy screen Conclusion: If you are a sucker for puzzle games, this game might be for you, but don't expect a fledged out shoot'em up+puzzle mix. 5/10 is my final verdict.
Remarkably polished and fun shmup which other games should seek to emulate. Everything here is solid, from presentation to execution the game feels tight, responsive, and smooth. If you enjoyed anything like dragon spirit, space harrier, bust a move, doctor mario, or 1942 this game does a remarkable job of combining puzzle / shmup gameplay.
I figured I would try this game out and I wasn't disappointed. It was fun streaming the game, although I was getting a bit on tilt when I faced the boss in Expert Mode (Damn, did that thing hit like a truck XD). I'll definitely consider streaming this more when there are some more updates to the game. So here's what I can say about the game with a first impression: Good points: - Good Graphics and Background - Good Music - Good controls - Gamepad Support - Relatively easy to pick up, even if you're completely new to the game's style - Difficulty levels scale pretty well so far - The different kinds of ships come with their own pros and cons, which will shine in multiplayer - Settings are nice and simple Bad points: - Multiplayer is only local at the moment. Hopefully we can see a network multiplayer in the feature, because this would be a blast to play with friends from my community. I'm already imagining the chaos we would cause in Expert Mode - Only 3 Campaign Levels, but there are more in development so this is just a minor thing I was alone during the review, so I can't say much else about the multiplayer aspect. The game looks pretty promising so far and I hope there's a lot more to come :) Full stream of the game can be found here: http://www.twitch.tv/yuuhi_x/c/6800254
A great mix between a puzzle game and a side scrolling shooter. Funny and entertaining, this game deserves more love. Try it.
