Well can't say we can give SGS NATO'S Nightmare a thumbs up at this point. Been playing computer wargames since the 80s and this one is failing to deliver on a variety of fronts. As a veteran gamer I expect 1) game documentation which explains the basic gaming systems for starters and none exists, which makes it very difficult to get going and enjoy. I understand the designers are keeping components in the abstract, but with no understanding of how supply works in the game, what units can be applied in tandem for combined arms or technologies, what the difference is between having units stacked or not stacked in same region, etc is both annoying and frustrating and takes the fun out of playing a game with this level of unit complexity. It's like playing chess with only your knowledge of checkers to play the game with; 2) no ability to watch a replay of opposing turn via PBEM and only a "live action' ability to review any action when playing vs AI or PBEM which makes it very difficult to follow in a small game and I have no idea how a large scenario would be trying to observe the action a single time (movement and combat need REPLAY capability to understand what is going on and why), 3) Upon completion of the final turn there is no FINAL RESULTS phase whereby you can send the completed game results to your pbem opponent nor any Final Results information to review beyond the final score. By contrast, Flashpoint Campaigns has a granular information Final Results review phase which is amazing. With this game u can't even click a Complete Final Turn button it just sits in your final turn leaving you to try and figure out what happened. Tons of typos/misspellings in the game texts. Further, their website has information for their previous games, but fails to be updated to include the corresponding info for this game which says to me they rushed it to market and it is NOT a finished product which should be purchased at this point. I am posting this review here for developers, but probably won't be playing it again unless a wide number of playability issues are addressed. Disappointed as we were looking for a strategic ww3 game to play but 👎 on this one 😟at this point.
Terrible. There is no manual for this monstrosity, just a web site for a bunch of other SGS products. The interface is horrible. The cards are a chaotic mess. And the game seems to brag about being a "monster wargame" with many of counters; I can't imagine playing this game with more counters given how poor the experience is. I'd refund it if I could.
Imagine finding a large, complex cold war board game that looks really cool at a garage sale, but it comes without a manual. That's the best way I can describe this game. The scenario, learning curve and complexity all appeal to me... but my god what am I supposed to do without instructions? The tutorial videos provided merely scratch the surface and don't explain any of the in-depth mechanics. I watched them all, jumped into the game and promptly had no idea what was going on. You can tell it's super complex and detailed, but the lack of instruction makes it impossible to make large scale, strategic decisions. Unless you're a serious SGS veteran and understand how all their games work, forget this one. Unless the developers add some comprehensive instructional tutorials and a detailed manual specific to this game, new players stand no chance. Shame, I still think it could be good.
Like a lot of SGS games it looks cool on first impression, then you realize it's not actually finished - glitches, imbalanced mechanics, lack of documentation, major campaign bugs, lack of scenarios, etc. It really should be EA. Take the positive reviews here with a grain of salt & note the number of hours those writers have played it - most are very early impressions. You won't find many w/high hour counts. The main designer typically pops up occasionally w/meandering posts promising major improvements & fixes, then goes dark for months, then promises again, but it's been over a year & a half with nothing delivered. Feels like he really likes the *idea* of designing a wargame, but not the attention to detail or follow-thru it requires. He also straight-up admitted that SGS releases large numbers of not-quite-finished games that they don't have the manpower to fully support, in order to make more money & fund new projects. Not surprising if you're familiar with their products. If you want to scratch that Cold War Gone Hot wargaming itch, the two WW3 Flashpoint Campaigns games are way more deserving of your time & money.
The store description features prominently 4 shorter scenarios that were supposed to be included a month after initial release. The game relased in May of 2023. Only one of those scenarios is available as of September 2025, and you'd have to search through multiple news posts about updates for *different games* and read all the changelogs to get that info from what the developer is providing on the Steam page. IMHO, this constitutes false advertising and that alone is reason enough to give this game a thumbs down.
不要求华约多强,起码得平衡吧?三个国土防空战斗机师没拦住一队北约飞机甚至还被人打下来两架,是不是太离谱了?还有北约逆天城防,要不再加强点吧?让华约彻底不用玩得了
a fun in depth cold war gone hot turn based strategy game. it takes a little getting used to the mechanics, and turn cycles, but its a lot of fun
他妈的骰子灌铅了是吧? 不是,TMD为什么对方溃败之后胜利的还是他们??
Too many times I have looked at an SGS game and thought...nah. I love good strategy but this game from the outside looking in looked to be too much chaos. Tried watching a few youtubes because there was so many positive reviews. And I did think it was vastly overpriced....was I wrong!! Purchased during the Steam summer sale and with only 90 minutes in realize that this one could be the ultimate war game. I still need to learn the mechanics but very much enjoying the process. Got to go watch more of XTRG videos. If there are any other good youtubes please do not hesitate to share.
The mechanics of this game are so different from the mechanics of other games of this type that it virtually requires a an in game tutorial which it completely lacks.
