SanctuaryRPG: Black Edition is a distinctive roguelike dungeon crawler developed by Black Shell Media and published by Plug In Digital that boldly embraces retro aesthetics while delivering surprisingly deep role-playing systems. At first glance, its ASCII-driven presentation may appear minimal or even archaic, but beneath the text-based visuals lies a complex and carefully constructed RPG experience. Rather than relying on high-definition graphics or cinematic storytelling, the game leans entirely into imagination, strategic combat, and procedural variety to carry its appeal. The most immediately striking aspect of SanctuaryRPG is its visual identity. Everything—from characters and enemies to environments and effects—is rendered in animated ASCII symbols and vibrant text colors. This stylistic choice is not simply nostalgic; it becomes integral to how players interpret the game world. Enemy types are differentiated through clever symbol usage, and animated text effects convey impact during combat. The aesthetic evokes early computer RPGs while remaining dynamic enough to feel alive. For some players, the presentation requires a brief adjustment period, but once the symbolic language becomes familiar, it transforms into a unique visual shorthand that enhances immersion. Combat operates through a turn-based, menu-driven system that hides significant tactical depth. Each encounter requires deliberate planning rather than button-mashing reflexes. Players must manage stamina, abilities, defensive stances, and positioning within the constraints of a structured turn cycle. Reckless aggression is often punished, and even minor foes can become dangerous if approached carelessly. The game encourages learning enemy patterns and understanding the interplay between abilities and equipment. As runs progress, the difficulty steadily escalates, reinforcing the importance of preparation and thoughtful resource allocation. Character customization is one of SanctuaryRPG’s strongest pillars. The Black Edition significantly expands the number of playable races and classes, offering a wide array of combinations that drastically alter gameplay style. Different builds encourage experimentation, whether focusing on brute-force melee combat, spellcasting versatility, or balanced survivability. Equipment diversity further amplifies build variety, with hundreds of weapons, armor pieces, and items available. Randomized loot ensures that no two playthroughs unfold identically, fostering a constant sense of discovery and adaptation. The roguelike structure adds weight to every decision. In its default configuration, permadeath is enabled, meaning a failed run results in starting over from scratch. This design reinforces careful play and heightens tension during critical encounters. However, for players who prefer a less punishing approach, alternative modes allow for a more forgiving experience. This flexibility broadens accessibility without compromising the core challenge for those who seek it. The sense of risk, combined with procedural generation, keeps replayability high even after many hours. Beyond combat and loot, SanctuaryRPG incorporates additional systems such as crafting, side quests, and hidden secrets scattered throughout its procedurally generated world. Exploration rewards curiosity, and subtle narrative threads are woven through item descriptions and environmental text. While the overarching story is not heavily emphasized, the game’s tone frequently shifts into playful and self-aware humor. Item descriptions and encounters often contain witty or absurd commentary, lightening the mood and preventing the experience from becoming overly grim despite its difficulty. That said, the game is not without its limitations. The turn-based combat loop, while strategic, can become repetitive during extended sessions once optimal tactics are discovered. Randomized loot drops occasionally introduce progression variance, where luck plays a noticeable role in shaping the strength of a run. The ASCII presentation, though intentional and charming to some, may deter players who rely heavily on graphical clarity or detailed environmental visuals. These elements may limit its mainstream appeal but are consistent with its retro-inspired identity. Ultimately, SanctuaryRPG: Black Edition succeeds by committing fully to its vision. It blends old-school ASCII aesthetics with modern roguelike sensibilities and expansive RPG customization. Its strength lies not in spectacle but in depth—strategic combat, extensive build experimentation, and high replay value anchored by procedural unpredictability. For players who appreciate challenging dungeon crawlers and are willing to embrace its unconventional presentation, it offers a rich and rewarding experience that stands apart from more visually conventional RPGs. Rating: 9/10
Weird
Decent RPG game with the ASCII style is interesting and fun to play with the story being okay and the combat is expected from this type of game. Overall, buy it if you want to experience something unique and retro.
It says it's a roguelike on the store page, but I missed that. I was expecting something more like an old fantasy MUD and I didn't enjoy my time with this game at all.
It took me about 8 years to get around to trying this and it's not bad. I like it because I'm old and I played games like this when they were cutting edge. The music is from around 1992, it sounds a lot like SoundBlaster music. The gameplay loop is from around 1983. The ASCII art is very good. Most of the humor is just dumb, honestly. Game dev humor is never as funny as they seem to think it is. It's not like your normal roguelike, Don't expect this to be like ToME or ADOM. it's like a text adventure where you move from one encounter to the next and you've got a 'base' where you can sort of pick from different things to do. On balance, it's alright. It's got good atmosphere if you're into the retro aesthetic. It's very shallow strategically and there are probably more engaging games that you can play, but it's OK. You won't be unhappy with it. Is it worth $8 at this point given that it's like 10 years old and not all that deep? Probably not. I'd get it on sale. Though I mean it's only $8, if you're not hurting too much for money. It's not an enthusiastic recommend here, but it's a solid recommend.
One of the BEST soundtracks ever. Combat is intuitive and nice, vibes are immaculate and hella nostalgia. Core gameplay is tight and the writing sublime. Buy it.
relaxing experience
Great text based RPG, some casual mechanics to enhance the main gameplay loop that are really well done! Congrats to the devs.
