Painfully boring
This game isn't for everyone. The horror plot is convoluted with often quite surreal. There's also a ton of exposition with a lot of lore that's difficult to remember. The game also offers little challenging gameplay -- it's more like a visual novel than a true point and click adventure game. But it has some good qualities too. It works well in creating a creepy, unsettling atmosphere that keeps you on edge. I also thought the protagonist was quite unique. He's an anti-hero who's religiously dogmatic, morally rigid, and not particularly likable. Not the usual kind of character you find in a game like this. The voice acting is uneven, but some if it is quite good (especially the actor voicing the protagonist), and the graphics are solid. Not a bad choice if you're looking for a darkly-themed point and click adventure game. I got it for under two dollars on sale, and I felt I got my money's worth. I'll give it a 6/10.
Pusztán játéktechnikailag talán a legkönnyebb point and click kalandjáték, amivel valaha játszottam. A zenék is jók. (A régen demóként megjelent, most The Yellow Mask néven elérhető első fejezet szerintem jobb, mint ami a véglegesben van.)
tl;dr - A really weird game with nostalgia visuals that trigger all the best stuff from early 2000's with mediocre voice acting and a really annoying protagonist you'll have issues connecting with. Gruesome story that makes sense, but still somehow still fails to connect everything into a great experience. Yes - if you like gory, no "happy ending" stories and if you can muster Benedek's VA and him squeaming at most things. No - if you want a captivating story and memorable characters (it is a gruesome/gory game) ========= The graphics are what you could simply describe as classic early-to-mid 2000s point-and-click adventure style: prerendered backgrounds with 3D character models. There are a lot of locations to visit around the town of Sveti Kotar, and the atmosphere is really solid. Character animations are stiff and janky, but honestly, I quite liked them. They reminded me of adventure games from around 20 years ago and added to the overall feel. Voice acting is mediocre at best. I’m from Croatia, and hearing heavy accents feels both wrong and fitting at the same time, since you’d expect locals to speak somewhat “broken” English. The problem is that some characters have very posh British accents while others sound American. It just feels weird talking to people who don’t fit the setting. The protagonist, Benedek, is a frustrating character to play. He’s a coward, constantly shaking, screaming, and panicking at the slightest sign of gore, while at the same time speaking in the name of God as if he’s some kind of saviour. He’s also very judgmental toward non-believers, sometimes to an extreme degree, which doesn’t feel natural for a priest. I also couldn’t really connect with him, and the voice acting for him is just okay at best. The story itself had potential. The visuals and atmosphere carry the game for most of the experience, since the soundtrack is mostly made of ambient tracks with only a few actual songs. The rest is atmospheric noise, distorted tones, and sound effects. Sometimes this works really well, especially in places like the dark forest, but over time you do start to feel the lack of a stronger soundtrack. The gameplay is not very puzzle-focused. Most of the progression comes from conversations and following story threads rather than solving traditional inventory puzzles. There are a few side quests, but they are smoothly integrated into the main narrative. Backtracking is also present but never really annoying, and the locations are interesting enough that revisiting them doesn’t feel bad. The inventory system is fine, but not used very often. The game also focuses on branching choices and multiple endings. I’m not a big fan of this in adventure games, since it often means replaying large parts of the game to see different outcomes. In this case, some choices can also lead to pretty gruesome consequences. I played through the main game and the Viktoria prologue and finished everything in about 13–14 hours. I didn’t run into any bugs or technical issues. The Viktoria prologue is solid overall, although it feels a bit strange that you can make choices that Viktoria clearly never made according to the main story. In most cases, those “wrong” choices just lead to an instant death or game over screen. Overall, I still recommend Saint Kotar to adventure game fans. The underlying story and the relationships between the townspeople are interesting, especially once later revelations start coming together. Just don’t expect a happy ending. The game keeps its dark, grim tone all the way through to the end.
Schön gruselig schräg für ein Adventure.
Saint Kotar's logo - the cross, the martyr, and the bracket. all painted in white with cracks in the foundation - is brilliant symbolic foreshadowing. The-Mark Entertainment has conjured a silent, creepy world with foggy landscapes and a great dual protagonist system that juxtaposes a devout priest's struggle with the mental decline of his companion. Voice acting may be a little over-dramatic, and while running fifteen seconds across a screen without a double click to teleport function slows the pace too much, the enduring mystery comes to a satisfying conclusion (or two).
