After having this on my wishlist for 9 months since getting a Vive, I finally got the game once it released and was sourly disappointed. The gameplay isn't RTS, its simply spamming ships against an equally spammable opponent and choosing targets during the ensuing (and prolonged) battle. Neither the campaign nor solo skirmish battles offer any objectives, tactical incentives, terrain, or really much of anything to levy as an advantage over your opponent. The controls are clunky but manageable, the environments are aesthetic enough, and I had a good "feel" going into it from the menu, but the gameplay itself is lackluster at best. I can't even see playing this on the supported multiplayer as having any value over bots since there is a total lack of any strategic elements. I do not recommend this game and am extremely disappointed after having had my eye on it for months as an extremely anticipated VR space RTS.
A strategic game with a great potential and an evident Battlestar Galactica overall mood. The dev is super responsive, is patching every bug we wrote and following community suggestions. The game itself it's still WIP, but yet very enjoyable, and the price is super fair as I expected for the full game with the campaign at least 15-20$ (it's not a wave shooter, it's a roomscale RTS like Homeworld). The interface is growing patch after patch, but I would say than zoom or drag a whole space battlefield with your own hands is yet gorgeous. At the moment 20/20 positive review here, let's give our support to this project.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80_wlz4TuL4 I think the developer of this game deserves much praise for trying something new and risky by undertaking something novel in VR at this point in time. It's very clear to see the inspiration that derived from Homeworld, and that's cool, but the real killer for me is the lack of strategy in the real time strategy part of this game. You have the ability to order troops, but there are no buildings to be built, no workers or mining resources, nor is there any form of battlefield maneuvering, so essentially all battles begin with each side stockpiling as many troops as resources allow, then swarming each other in a really cool looking, but ultimately shallow space battle. You just kinda set it all up and then watch it happen. In fact, this set up and let loose gameplay makes me think that Saga has more in common with Gratuitous Space Battles than it does with other space rts games. One element that's very unique however, is there's a really cool ability to sit in your ship in first person mode which is very cool, but again, the inability to shoot and actively participate in the combat means besides looking cool it is essentially a function without meaning, and just feels like a missed opportunity. The campaign mode offers scenarios with increasing difficulty, but a lack of story means there's no real sense of stakes or investment for these missions, so for example the mission text is telling me we must destroy these space pirates, but why do I care? There are also skirmish modes, allowing for bots, teams and match customization, which is an excellent addition for those who don't want to play multiplayer. The graphics in the game are very good, but not in a realistic sense. It's very peculiar, but when looking down on the ships I get the distinct feeling like I'm watching toy models flying around. It's odd, but actually quite cool! Audio in the game is okay; nothing particularly outstanding or novel, and all the usual space sound effects are there. The control scheme took some getting used to; You can zoom in super close or far out, but it took me quite a while to understand that when I zoomed in I was being zoomed into the motion controller's location. Once I realized that, this system actually makes good sense. Locomotion is achieved by dragging yourself, as well as being able to click teleport to ships. As a result, VR sickness was non existent for me, which is great. The only hassle with this movement style is that when you are zoomed out you can quickly and essentially traverse vast amounts of space by dragging yourself and arms length, but when you zoom in so that you are closer to life size scale, that same drag motion now moves you the equivalent of about 3 feet, which is pretty much useless. I'm not sure what would be best for combating this, but as it stands it means you pretty much have to stay zoomed out if you wanna do stuff besides just watching. An option exists to lock a camera onto a ship, but it's not very practical and the view is pretty limited. As for controlling troops, a tutorial is offered but I found the control configuration was not super intuitive, at least on the Touch. Overall, Saga of the Void feels like it was built on a really great idea, but that it wrapped up a little too early. If this game were in Early Access, I think I would have been more likely to recommend based on it's potential because it certainly looks like it's shaping into something incredible, but by calling this the final product, I can only say it feels a little lackluster. The developer has a great community presence, and I really wouldn't be surprised if his next game builds on this experience to achieve something incredible, but for now I think Saga of the Void is not it. I will note the pricing is excellent at under $8, so you might still wanna pick this one up just to check out how cool it looks, but do temper your expectations that this wont be a deep real time strategy you might be expecting.
TLDR. VR so far has seen quite a few titles, which are just "copy paste" of many other games in the same genre. Particularly "The wave shooter." So we are always asking for "something different." This is... "something different." If you like Homeworld, and always wanted to (literally) be in the thick of things, with the ships the size of buildings, all around you.. here it is. You can view the very detailed ships from a "command deck," and out in space. And have them In "VR size" anything from model scale, right up-to the aforementioned "life size" pretty scary. So a homeworld type game but in VR. Does that ound like something you have wanted to play.. The audio is spot on with an easy on the ears military beat (remember the scene from Aliens where the marines are boarding the drop-ship).... you got it. Now remember this is still in EA, so there are gonna be a few bugs, And that's what EA is all about right, helping the devs get it 100%. But at 6 quid. (or regional currency) this is a complete no-brainer. And for the next week, its even got a 34% discount. Get it, play it, give feedback.. and welcome a whole new genre in VR.
CapitalShip VR has the beginnings of an epic game. However, it falls short of reaching the goal line. With only three skirmish maps (all of which appear to be the same with different backgrounds) and five difficulty settings, CapitalShip VR is missing the rest of the recipe for a great game. And as an RTS, it falls flat on it's face as the strategy is simply making as many miners as possible and overwhelming the fleet; The AI does little to respond to your assaults. Controls are not very intuitive and the tutorial does little to alleviate the confusion. The game promises that you can make formations but it seems each time I have tried the ships just kind of move toward the enemy, at their own paces and not as a formation. Selecting and deselecting ships doesn't seem very natural as the selection is done with a sort of cone and you tend to grab the wrong ships or clusters of ships that you don't want to move. On that, ships tend to crash into each other without even attempting to avoid collision. And yes, they appear to take crash damage. Combat is somewhat lackluster. I have no indication of how damaged the enemy ships are until they explode in a disappointing boom. Carriers, when told to move, seem to leave their strike craft behind. This can cause issue when you issue an attack command and the tiny attackers have to traverse the entire map in order to get to their target. The name of the game is CapitalShip. Yet the actual capital ship doesn't really portray that. The larger craft such as the cruisers and carriers are almost as large and the miner ships are much larger than the capital ship itself. Even with the above issues, Capitalship VR does deliver on several fronts. The ships themselves seems varied, each with a particular function and the ships are very well detailed and look stunning. I found myself pausing the action just to move the camera around the ships to take a good look at each one. The detail is all there and you can even make out the menus on the bridge of the capital ship. Very cool! I cannot stress how friggin' cool it is to issue commands to the fleet, and watch the action take place from the bridge, overshadowed by Jupiter and its moon, Europa. It truly is one of the coolest things you can do in a video game. All in all, the developers need to take a look at successful space RTS games, chiefly, Homeworld. It had a sense of purpose and strategy. Both sorely lacking in CapitalShip VR. At the time of writing this the game is still early access and the developers need to take a good look at the best ways to improve this game because they are sitting on a gold mine, a real treasure that can push the forefront of both VR and RTS.
Its great. Got the homeworld vibe going. Though could use some polish First RTS game on the Vive that has a great sense of scale. Its aweing to see ships duke it out from the bridge of your capitol ship. Pros: Skirmish Mode with varying difficulties Very intuitive controls, was very easy to get pick up and play. Absolutely massive sense of scale. Variety of Ships with different roles and attributes Active Dev. Cheap! Cons Sound FX, Music could use some work. While the ship models are beautiful, the visual effects (explosions) could use an update. Some Performance issues in some of the larger battles. Pathfinding needs a lot of work. Ships will often collide with each other and don't seem to maintain formations. Overall this is an excellent start. I enjoyed this game and look forward to more.
It's early, but there's a lot of promise here. The ships look great and the controls are intuitive. I like that you can use roomscale or choose to stand/sit with no disadvantages. The game just needs more to do in the campaign and skirmishes but I've no doubt it's coming.
Disclosure: I was a tester with no vested intrerest in the dev. This game looks and feels great - a nice, atmospheric, Homeworld feel with some great graphics. It can be a little glitchy in places, but the dev has been VERY active in addressing these. It's also not a particularly fast paced play, which I do not mention as a criticism, rather to emphasise to prospective buyers that this is a strategy game, rather than yet another wave shoooter. It is, however, still an enjoyable space battle game, large cruisers, miners, battle ships, fighters, explosions, missiles and lasers. Looks fantastic. It's early access, for sure, but emminently playable - I have been waiting for a space strategy VR game, and, especially for the price, Capital Ship should not disappoint.
It's a very good idea for a vr game... a few bugs but for it to be in early access and like $5 I'm coo with the few hicups. The dev has been very helpful and has fixed a few of the bugs i pointed out within hours of posting them. The controls are simple and easy to pick up.
