«Safe House»
The story mode tells the tale of American operatives in a central African country, while an endless mode is more freeform. The game suffers from terrible interface: scrolling across the safe house is very slow even on the fastest setting, the game does not recenter the display so you can see the entire building after an interaction (requiring constant, needless scrolling and zooming out), and mouse input is frustratingly lagged where sometimes a single click is registered but sometimes you need to double click. Money is earned by successfully completing mini-games across various rooms that are placed in the building. Most of these games involve finding words on a list: checking a valid code from a list, picking the right medicine from a list, checking names on a list, picking bomb ingredients from a list, putting together a fake passport (not involving a list!), responding to a phrase with a specific word, and a simple shift cipher. These are relatively entertaining but ultimately repetitive. Agents can also be given missions during each day, but these involve no mini-games or interaction at all, just a percentage chance of success based on stats. In the end, Safe House has some potentially interesting but ultimately repetitive mini-games surrounded by an inelegant interface. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dsr2TKoatuE
We only have books here, totally don’t have secret spy stuff here hahaha If you can’t become a spy, why not be the one that manages them and keep the safe house in top notch condition? Just keep the funding up, repurpose empty rooms, train recruits, and help with some tasks here and there. Easy peasy. In the middle of a political conflict in Kazataire to take down their leader? Well what did you call me in for other than succeeding! When you first start out, you have three pre-built rooms with the others empty. As you find out, two of them hold tasks with the third being your office. In addition to making some profit with the tasks, you have goals to complete before you can move on with the story. Most of them include getting enough money to buy whatever, or whoever, you need so successfully completing tasks and the others include completing missions. So if you fail a task, not only will it go towards a penalty (such as earning less money from tasks) but money will be taken out of your balance. Making it take longer to continue on. Once you’re ready to construct your first room, you’ll be introduced to the different phases: construction, assignment, and regular tasking hours. Construction lets you build a room you don’t have in an empty room or upgrade an existing room. Though upgrading rooms, and by extension the rooms that only give a small boost, doesn’t seem worth it when comparing the cost for the low boost it gives. Once you build the Spy Lounge and Black Ops Barracks, assignment phase can be used as you can recruit agents (costing money of course), upgrade their skills once they level up, and assign them to missions. You’ll have story related missions and side missions that you don’t have to do but will help level them up. However, despite being told to train your recruits with the side missions, you will only get that one paired with the story related mission. So if you fail the side mission, you lost your only chance to level up a recruit before the story mission. So all you can do is keep trying the story mission hoping the low chance of success percentage works in your favor or keep doing it till it becomes a more favorable one by itself. There is also blank mission buttons that show up occasionally that do nothing as well which can be what the system should be doing with the side missions, but I’m not sure. Lastly, and most importantly, is the time you’ll be doing your tasks. You just have to wait till a room gets a task, signaled by the room being highlighted, click on it and the task will be displayed on the screen. Depending on which room it is, the amount of time spent can vary. You can get tasks that are generally quick and easy like: checking if a label matches up with what's on the list (Loading Bay), checking if a name is on a list of people to question (Interrogation Room), or a spy said an acceptable code word in which you say one back and see if they respond with the right one (Front Office). Or you can get ones that take more time like: unscrambling a phrase by figuring out if you need to go up or down a certain amount on the alphabet (Cryptology), forge a passport (Forgery), make sure you give an agent the right blood bag and medicine for their ailment that they are not allergic to (Infirmary), or making three bombs that goes along with the requirements (Bomb Workshop). What makes some of these harder is that many ingredients, codes, or words will be spelled almost similarly (e.g. Hemolene and Hemolyne). All the things you need to know plus how to do them is in your dossier (or cheat sheet). As there are tasks in which the list changes per day, make sure to use it all throughout. Though it does seem weird that only one task is available with the next one taking a while for it to show up (you can even sit on a task for a whole day and it won't progress till you do it). I do wish that all rooms have some kind of task during the task phase, like perhaps if there are missions in progress have tasks you can do to increase the chances if you succeed. With the extra two you can build that solely gives boosts have a task to keep it up and running (like making propaganda for the Propaganda Office). Along with that, the camera needs to be looked at as well. When you click on a room to do it's task, it zooms in but it doesn't zoom all the way out when finished. Making you zoom out and possibly scroll to the side every time. It would be nice if it either zoomed out all the way and centered when you get out of the task itself or gives you a choice whether or not you want the game to zoom into rooms when you act With having multiple phases, I do wish there was a way to test new rooms out even if you can only do it once. That way you don’t waste a whole day or money trying to figure out and do a task correctly. Or even a window that shows up for all rooms on how to do that room’s task when first building it. Weirdly enough, you do get a rundown of the first three rooms when you first build them but not for the others. If only some rooms get the treatment of being explained before doing it, then all of them should. There is also the problem with the interface that deals with all the mouse interactions and the shortcut to open the cheat sheet. When I first started, the shortcut did nothing and double clicking was the only way to get the room’s task to activate. After a couple times of sessions, the shortcut finally did work and single clicks finally registered, however sometime it doesn’t. It’s a toss up whether a single click will register or not so I (and I’m sure many) will just double click as that trust is gone. If you’re really unlucky, the room will register the first click and the second click will click a button to reject/accept a code, making you fail the task without it even showing. The shortcut to open the cheat sheet also seems to not work on the first day, but works afterwards, despite being told that it should that early. Sadly, that is not all in the buggy department. I also had an occasional bug with the submit button in the Bomb Workshop where it would not work. Thus, forcing me to either take the penalty as this is the only task you can abandon midway or start the day over. The last bug I encountered a lot is regarding the spies and soldiers. I constantly had trouble with the button to upgrade a skill to actually register and had to go for another skill or at worst not able to register for any of them. I also noticed occasionally that a skill would have 0 points in it despite each spy and soldier starting out with 1 in each. I didn’t delve much into endless mode, going through story mode multiple times to get all three endings was enough for me, but if you want more Safe House you can go there. From the looks of it, you start out just like you would in Story Mode with the first three rooms pre-placed, just without the story popping up.
Verdict
Safe House really teeters between a game that I would recommend and a game I wouldn’t. It’s a decent task manager game, but the foundation is a little rocky and needs to be roughed out. If all the bugs are dealt with, more improvements were made, and more variety put in Safe House can be a better game. Hopefully more updates are being planned but for now, pick this up only if you can deal with the shortcomings. The game was 100% better looking in the greenlight trailer. It's downright hideous to look at. The original direction had a much more cellshaded, stylized look and now all the character portraits look like they came out of google paint. Despite the game looking quiet ugly, it somehow drops in framerate constantly. The controls are awkward to handle, you have to double click everything including opions in the options menu. The camera to view your base is also is way to slow, even at max setting. The game also demands that you have pin point accuracy when pressing buttons, and if your not pixel perfect it'll tell ya to f**k off. Speaking of settings, the game lacks any sort of real opions like lighting effects and doesn't even provide a windowed mode. The story was really what I was hoping to be it's saving grace, but it immediantly failed to intrest me. It's relying on the typical "Poor, unstable Middle Eastern/African nation being invaded/protected by big daddy USA". Along with terrible character portraits I couldn't stand to look at the game for more than a half hour. It really is a shame, I had been wait for this game for a year, it promised to be close to Papers Please which is a fantastic game with a sterotypical communist russia setting, but it's dry humor, random events, and the thought of the morality of your actions helps keep it interesting. What Safe House failed to realize was that it wasn't the busy work that kept people intrigued with the game, but everything connected to the busy work. A foundation to build many great elements on, while Safe House only has the foundation.
I recommend this... very hesitantly. I think there's still quite a way to go. The premise is pretty cool, and is why I backed this game on Kickstarter. However, several aspects about it ruined it for me very quickly (as you can see by my playtime). - Gameplay feels VERY slow. Everything from the events taking a while to occur, to the camera movement (even with maximum camera speed in settings). - The camera is just plain annoying and needs reviewing by the dev ASAP. My camera should not still be moving 1-2 seconds after I release the directional key. Dev has tried to do something fancy, but it doesn't work. I want the camera to stop moving the instant I take my finger off the key, not when it eventually runs out of momentum after travelling around the world twice. And as previously mentioned, it moves way too slow. - Feels like I want to zoom out a touch more. When I struggle to fit the whole house on my monitor (a 2k widescreen), it feels like everything is just way too close to my face. - The camera zooming to each room when I click on it to perform an action is annoying, meaning I have to zoom back out every.single.time... - Might just be me but doesn't seem excellently optimised. Only getting 30-40fps and my PC sounds like it's about to take off with GPU temps at the maximum. This is on a decent gaming rig that can handle most AAA titles with high settings. Overall though i'm still recommending it, as it has the bones of an awesome game. I just don't have the patience to play through the issues above - i'd love to remove them from my review if the dev decides to implement any changes,
The safe house is way too slow and boring. During the period where you are earning money you have to repeat the same task time after time which just becomes boring right away. The infirmary is made way too complicated as one can not see which medecin helps for what, which should have next to the medecin itself and not the secret book, which means one how to use longer time than nessecary on a boring task. Bug report: The front door code system does not work probably. When one spy got in, I lost money because I used a code word in the right colunm, after the second respond. So I thought the right colunm didn't count towards the spy. But when another spy showed up, I lost money because I did not use a code word from the second colunm.
As someone who doesn't seem to like the same games everyone else loves, I find Safe House refreshingly different. Put as simply as possible, it is really a collection of mini-games of varying simplicity, packaged in a storyline. The story is interesting, and where the mini-games are so simplistic that by themselves they would not really entertain, the format that has one rushing to complete them as quickly and efficiently as possible so as to maximize the number completed each "night" gives them some life. I played the entire game through twice, making different decisions in order to experience different endings; it retained that much replayability, but some design flaws and errors made that the most I could bring myself to play. In case a developer is reading, I will ennumerate some errors and suggestions below. In all, I found the game worth playing for awhile as someone who wanted a different kind of game than what seems ubiquitously out there, although game errors, interface and coding issues, ultimately made the game only enjoyable for a couple play-throughs before it became too tedious, repetative, and frustrtating to continue. One of the biggest frustrations is that the Safe House does not fit entirely on the screen, and scrolling the screen around to see the unseen areas is so annoyingly slow and cumbersome that it proves a constant nuisance. The game would immediately be more pleasant if the Safe House were resized just a little bit smaller to fit entirely on the screen at once, and then perhaps zooming to enlarge with greater definition if a room is selected. Sometimes a double click is needed, and sometimes it is not, in the clunky interface... in the end, one begins automatically double-clicking, and occasionally instantly failing a room because the second click registers as a click on an incorrect response... very annoying. In some cases, missions for operators and spies are blank. In some cases, the costs for hiring new spies are cited differently than charged (for example, the fourth spy you hire is priced at 25K, but only actually charges 10K when hired). There appears to be no coding to prevent the randomly selected names and pictures for spies and Black-Ops characters from repeating - as a result, in one of my play throughs, I had three Black-Ops characters with identical images and names simultaneously. Very confusing. Even though spy and black-ops characters are sometimes female, the text about their missions and results use only male pronouns... very confusing and a bit off-putting. There are numerous type-os in the text throughout the entire game. The task base reward amount REALLY should be varied to reflect the length of time it takes to complete the task (the infirmary and bomb-making tasks are very time consuming, while the receiving and interrogation tasks are very brief... since trying to complete as many as possible in the allotted time is the main game mechanic motivating the mini-games to be worth playing, it is important that you get a much larger proportional reward for completing much more time consuming tasks. Since this is not done, it results in a bit of dread for randomly being assigned the longest mini-games, as it is a sentence to not completing many missions at all that night, but doing as much demanding rapid solving. When looking at the Shooting Range for the fourth upgrade, I was charged the cost of a third upgrade and then suddenly reduced to an unupgraded status and offered to buy the first upgrade all over again... very annoying.
I so wanted this game to be good.... Yet it's essentially unplayable. Even if the interface, (which lags like a turbo engine from the 70's), was fixed, what you're left with is an inane set of pointless and boring mini-games. Scroll, click, then match some letters or decode a message using an alphabet-shift (you need to write down) and you get some money. But why?! Why am I doing this simple and boring task?! You get no information from them, no advancement in the story...just some money to buy another room so you can play a different version of the same mini-game. I've had head colds that were more fun. This is supposed to be a strategy spy game...so where is the strategy? When do I get to make decisions, plan an operation, decide if someone is lying to me or not? If the answer is after several hours of 3rd grade letter puzzles, you've failed Intro to Game Design on day one. As a huge le Carre fan, I was looking forward to a cerebral espionage game that wasn't just another shooter in a tuxedo. Instead this game is nether; it's more Sudoko but less sexy and thrilling. DO NOT BUY, stick to Spy Party.
Your primary (perhaps only) view will be a side view of the safe house similar to the XCOM games. You'll initially start with two rooms, and each room has these sorts of mini-puzzles that you must complete each day. As you build more rooms, each one will have a new mini-puzzle that you complete when the room blinks. Some of the mini-puzzles are extremely easy, others can be quite a bit more challenging. Failing a mini-game results in a loss of money, while succeeding will earn money. The money is then used to build more rooms in the safe house. The gameplay starts out very simply, but as you continue building your house, things will get more complicated as you get more and varied tasks to complete. There is a bit of story that is delivered by text dialogue, and it's interesting even if it's rather simple. Overall, we've been enjoying Safe House, though it perhaps might not be a game for everyone.
