I really want to like this game, but simply can't. I really tried, too. The main premise of the game is to combine up to 3 runes to make new and unique spells, which sounds like it would be a lot of fun as runes drop like crazy. The problem is that you need an additional item called a 'combiner' to create a spell, and these are incredibly rare. 1 combiner is required for 2-rune spells. If you want to create a 3 rune spell, you need an 'advanced combiner' which I have never seen, though you can make one using 4 regular combiners. I have also never seen 4 combiners in 1 contiguous game. I was looking for a game that had a mechanic like this, forgot I had Runers and fired it up. I got probably 10+ rooms into the first dungeon, found around 8 runes but 0 combiners, then got killed using the starting weapon, again, and remembered why I stopped playing. I have put 6+ hours into this game and I've combined maybe 2 spells total, and those I had to look up because I didn't want to waste runes (well, not the first one because I didn't know about the combiner mechanic the first time). This game should be about experimentation, but it practically requires a guide so as not to waste the arbitrarily rare (and in my opinion, unnecessary) combiners. Booooooo, I know this game is 10 years old, and the developer is most likely long gone, but this 1 mechanic has always kept me from being able to play this game despite desperately wanting to do so. If there could be an easy mode without combiners, or remove them entirely, it would be totally worth playing still. I'm honestly surprised they thought this was a good idea since the game brings 1 thing to the table, freedom of spell creation, but locks it behind this stupid rare drop.
Remote Play Together
TLDR: It's a really cool concept, but it's also repetitive, lackluster, broken, and has terrible controls. The cool thing that sells this game is that it has a custom spell maker, where there are over 200 spells. This is a pretty cool idea, but it's also pretty basic. Like, you just combine different things to get the spells, so basically, there's hundreds of spells, and depending on what you have in your inventory, you can craft them. That's it. There's not really a good customization aspect to it, it's just that there's a LOT of spells, and you pick your favorites. The game is broken, where I just entered a room that essentially had two things happening at once, which shouldn't happen (I know you haven't played the game, but essentially it was two types of rooms on top of each other, which didn't make much sense). When dying, the whole game crashed, and crashed my computer. I couldn't even force close it; I actually had to hold the power button on my computer, which is a rarity, and shouldn't ever happen with a game. The controls are horrendous. Basically, you can have six spells at once, which is cool, BUT how you fire them is bad. You move with WASD, you use a spell for each RMB and LMB, but then 1-4 also do spells. So, the mouse is easy enough, but then pressing 1-4 while pressing WASD is impossible, especially since the cooldown on spells is usually less than a second. Also, if you have auto-fire enabled, you literally cannot push 1-4, which just shows the devs didn't playtest this too much, considering that's a game breaking element for the auto-fire, which means the auto-fire is useless. The graphics are bad. The sound is terrible. It looks like a kid drew it in paint, and then the sounds all sound like some dude and his girlfriend just spoke into a cheap headset mic. Like honestly most of the SFX are the enemies saying, "ugh" when you hit them, and it sounds like some random person just saying "ugh". It's almost funny actually. There are also not SFX where there should be, like the player being hit, or standing on fire and being damaged. The gameplay itself is basically just running around dodging enemies, shooting as many spells as you can. The level up system is pretty stupid. There are tons of different options for levelling up, and the game randomly selects a few for you to choose from. This is a cool roguelike element that I usually like (Ziggurat did this well, a lot of this game seems to be drawing from Ziggurat). The problem is, the vast majority of the level ups are incredibly build specific, so they will almost always be quite useless. Overall, levelling up just doesn't feel rewarding basically ever, and you don't really build your character.
I would love to recommend this game. The mechanics are solid, the gameplay loop really hooks you in, and it's so much fun to discover spells, especially with a friend! However, ceaseless crashes keep this game from reaching its full potential. I don't mind when roguelikes don't allow save states or level skips, but to do so requires the final product to be free of frustrating crashes, and Runer is not. Crashed once on the third-to-last floor, and once on the second last floor while trying to use a special item. Both cases lost me about 2 hours progress each, and on some fun, but tricky achievement runs. A near-perfect game, cursed with crashes and an absent developer.
I'd LOVE to see a sequel to this! graphically it could use some work and there are quite a few bugs that cause me to crash. maybe a little diversity in the enemies
A fun game with a lot to discover. Once you find the right combinations you'll become a terrifying warmachine that can't be stopped!
Has some of the most clever progression between runs I have seen in a roguelike. The first couple of runs will be spent creating lots of spells with combiners to see what they do, not really knowing what everything is or what everything does. After a few runs though, you have some array of spells you can create without combiners and you know which ones are good and which ones aren't. At this point you can start refining your playstyle and focusing on upgrading certain spells/choosing the right level-up abilities. From that point forward it becomes a blast to play through.
It's a lot better than you might think.
