They're taking down the forums and deleting every post. Goodbye, 14 years of hard work and community games and assets. Never buying anything from GGG any more. ♥♥♥♥ this.
don't buy this or any rpgmaker release from gotcha gotcha games with the RPGMakerWeb forums shutting down by their hand in december 2026, taking down over a DECADE AND A HALF of resources and tutorials with it, it's clear that GGG does not give a damn about the community that powers these engines. archive what you can via wayback and rpgmakerchat.com and the like, just don't support this trashheap of a publisher.
I absolutely cannot recommend RPG Maker if you are a serious game developer looking to create something unique in terms of GAMEPLAY, it's better to use any other game engine and never consider using RPG Maker, because it will limit you in every possible way. BUT, if you are an artist, or story writer, or musician like me, and you don't care much about gameplay, you can create a very simple game, like a walking simulator or the most simple JRPG. If your art is unique, no one will care about boring or simple gameplay. If you are a serious game developer: never use RPG Maker. If you are an artist who just wants to create a world or make your art interactive and doesn't want to break your brains over creating unique gameplay: RPG Maker is your best choice. RPG Maker isn't made for games, it's made for art. Think of Yume Nikki, Mogeko Castle, Black Souls, Demons Roots, Ib, Cradle of Nightmares, Fear & Hunger, Omori, Ao Oni, what are they best at? Art, atmosphere, world, music, characters, everything, but gameplay? It's on the second plan, just exist to make the art interactive. Don't repeat my mistakes! Use this engine to create interactive art, not games, because unique gameplay will be VERY limited by bugs and engine errors that simply can't be fixed without coding and headaches.
The devs/ publisher are destroying YEARS of community resources, guides, assets, support, etc. Preserving this knowledge would be so incredibly simple and IMO absolutely essential to keeping this franchise alive and thriving. This is absolutely unacceptable. And all for what? To try and force people to use a separate system that is unintuitive and barely used. I encourage you to NOT buy this software until the devs/ publisher screw their heads back on and show an ounce of respect for all of the hard work people have put into to make this an incredible software to use.
The forums are being shutdown. Over a decade's worth of guides, plugins and technical help are being deleted with no official archive.
Out of the blue Gotcha Gotcha Games corporation decided to effectually kill off the vast, English-speaking part of the community by disabling their official forums and offering no viable alternative (their pathetic excuse of a forum isn't one). Their products were always very far from perfect and required jumping through many hoops to create anything that wouldn't resemble an uninspired mid 90s jrpg clone, but some people after a lot of effort actually made decent, original games with it. This boneheaded decision though has, most likely irreversibly, damaged what was the best about their product: the vibrant community of helpful people, plugin makers and artists who helped other people like me to do the stuff we wanted in this engine and its other iterations. Why would any sane person support such company and their products? They deserve nothing but bankrupcy.
Don't buy ANY product from Gotcha Gotcha Games unless they revoke their decision to shut down the RPG Maker forums. We can't let almost 20 years of history and community-made content, which includes A LOT of resources that the community still use to this day, be lost because of greed.
Gotcha Gotcha Games will soon be shutting down and deleting the RPG Maker forums, erasing a decade and a half of user made resources, tutorials, and assets for the wider community to use and learn from. I don't recommend anyone purchase their releases because they show so little disregard for the community and its history.
The owners/devs of RPGmaker are killing the 14 year old forum. hundreds of thousands of guides help and tutorials will be lost and they refuse to archive it. I imagine there will be a community effort in order to preserve this but for now I will give a negative review. Get into Godot or something.
I bought this program when it was on sale for like $6 I actually forgot it was so expensive normally. I've used it to make a game before and I found it frustrating. Most of the support comes from the community though plugins and tutorials and I would have given up trying to use this otherwise because I feel like I have to fight with it at every turn. I'm still on a quest to find a game making program I enjoy. I'd label this as "usable but not preferred".
