room13
Very good and bloody game You start in a room and u have to kill the zombies who are after you, You can use a lot of different weapons to once you completed a room, you can choose different directions to go to for the next room some rooms have traps that makes it harder for you to complete it alive https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MdieFbEr0GY
Buggy as hell but still a blast. It's something I keep coming back to and I'm not exactly sure why. The customization of both your character (via masks that grant abilities, some timed some passive) and your weapons (too much to even mention) is probably my favorite part, even if I always end up just trying to get the chaser bullets so I can spam attack and not have to actually try to aim for enemies. Getting stuck in floors and dying randomly is definitely frustrating especially when you're on round 34 and need to get to round 35. There's also the matter of needing 50k zombie kills and I am not even at 18k after 11h in game.
Stairs and controls are your greatest enemy. Greater than the zombies, monsters and traps, you will die more times trying to climb on or off the stairs than anything. The game is action packed, and fast, until you have to go up platforms, where you immediatly have you make sure you're not only in the sweet spot, but holding the direction perfectly, or you run right off. It's hard to recommend, but I'm sure some people can adjust.
Clunky and poorly-designed, tutorial text that tells you keyboard inputs when you are using a controller, sloppy and non-intuitive controls, tons of bugs, boring graphics, missing lots of polish like audio feedback cues, enemies don't cue when they are going to spawn, spongy enemies with no damage indication, etc, etc, etc, etc. This feels very much like a beginner project. They got it working, but it is not a good game.
It would be a funny game for short game intervalls. But the controls are so bad, you mostly die because you can't take the stairs. If there was an option for better controls, I could enjoy the game. But with this, not worth any money.
I should be upfront and say that my "playtime" shown doesn't reflect the true amount of time put into this - it's from idling it. In reality I played about 30 minutes of this game, and got effed off with the controls which are really bad. It's a fun little side-on shoot em up platformer (or, at least, would be....) that takes place in a single screen environment. Zombies pour in from various places, and you shoot / stab them with randomised weapon drops. You can throw things like hammers and axes, or pick up a machine gun, or if out of ammo use up some of your health to spit gobs of blood at enemies. Sometimes traps in the environment become active, and you can lure enemies into them but also can be damaged yourself. Ammo isn't all that plentiful, so surviving the wave of enemies becomes a frantic mix of bashing their heads in whilst running for the nearest drop of bullets and health, or leaping over them. It's a simple game, but a fun one...up to a point. That point is when you try to aim, or go up stairs. Aiming is rubbish - you can only aim horizontally or vertically, unless walking up stairs which allows you to aim diagonally. The problem then is that it's really fiddly trying to get your character to go upstairs, as you have to press diagonally up to make them connect and half the time they won't do it. Unlike other games where just jumping above the level of the stairs would see you "sticking" to them upon landing, here I always had to remind myself to do it, and it wasn't intuitive or consistent. Pressing up and jump won't do it, only pressing diagonally up will. But if you get it slightly wrong then you just jump through the stairs, and it's a pain in the backside! The game tells you to play with a controller, and then handles like a piece of crap when you do. Aim with the right stick - but only in a two way direction??!! Why can you not aim in 8 ways unless you're standing on stairs? The game is so close to being a recommended that it's a shame something so fundamental is poorly done, and infuriatingly sloppy. The mechanics are sound, it can be fun and exciting, it looks quite decent and has a good soundtrack. To have it undone by something so simple as the controls being a load of stinky poop is a pity. Whether I used the dpad or the control stick it never felt quite slick enough to handle the challenge the game throws at you, and after half an hour I'd had enough.
4/10 -Cool art -Only fun for a few hours -Interesting bosses -Different special power based on equipped mask It's pretty much a mobile game really. In that it's designed to addict you by unlocking upgrades with little else for substance. If story mode actually offered more story behind the bosses than a 30 second section of how they "died", presumably leading to why they kill the way they do, it might be interesting. In four hours I already have 70% acheivements and feel like I've only seen five different rooms. Really don't know if I feel like getting the last 15 achievements because at four hours in, doing the exact same thing over and over is pretty much stale... Having to die 10,000 times to unlock something also really puts me off. I've died 145 times in four hours. Why would you lock anything behind having the player die that many times. It's really quite irritating. Controls are pretty trash too, running up or jumping on stairs is way too clunky half the time. $2 dollar.
Ugh, the controls suck, even with a controller. The fact that the game will sometimes just decide "Right, time to use the keyboard" is annoying. It does look neat.
Too grindy, and clunky controls. Other reviews have expressed similar and its true. Its a real shame because I really like the vibe of the game, and the two bosses I have come across seemed very cool. However, the game is hard because of the wrong elements. You start off with pitiful health, traversing stairs is always inconsistent, enemies spawn out of no where (even in loot crates!) and when you do die, you lose ALL of your progress, aside from masks. After a while I was able to defeat one of the bosses, I was ecstatic, but when I went to investigate their dropped item, it just froze in a white screen. All that effort for nothing. Other things must be unlocked by dying THOUSANDS of times, no thanks. I didn't play for that long, but I can still tell the effort won't be worth it. It felt like I had made ZERO progress in 2 and a half hours. The only runs that went anywhere was basically due to lucky RNG, and despite my best efforts, most of the time I died due to falling zombies and stairs :/ I wish I was able to discover more of what this game had to offer, but the game works against you.
