I reserve judgement as I've not played the whole game yet but so far so good. Decent atmosphere and sounds. Puzzles so far have been ok, nothing to strenuous. Something to entertain my Sunday while its raining outside :)
Room 208 is a puzzle game, only played it for a short bit considering it was gifted to me by the developer I felt obliged to give it a try, here is my first impressions. Right at the beginning of the game, the frame rate is lower than it should be, however once you get in the Room 208, it is fine at least on my system. It is a puzzle game with a few jump scares in the way, and some resource management mix in, that is one of the potential gripes i had with the game, Puzzle and time limits each is given trew 2 different mechanics ( the lighter fuel and sanity) doesn’t quite make it happen for me, but that is a personal issue, however there is another issue that i encountered during the brief time i played, that was a couple bugs, first bug i encountered was a floating object, that happen when i was interacting with a candle chandelier and i closed a drawer, that could been part of the horror of the game, but it didn’t feel like it, the other was a message telling me it couldn’t save a puzzle though i was able to complete it after i left the room, the message kept being on screen however. Ambience was nice, however the “Jump Scare” models could have been improved a bit. Overall however if you like puzzle games, maybe you can enjoy this game, it is not an action game as is mentioned in the steam tag system, just a standard okayish Puzzle game.
Room 208, is a high quality immersive mystery horror game with some fantastic graphics, it also features some decent studio recorded dialogue and audio effects to immerse you. It has an interesting story line where you play the role of a man who can apparently communicate with the dead, and he uses his gift to help dead people. You have been asked to use your ability by the hotel owner to help fix the strangeness and happenings that are occurring. The atmosphere at the start of the game feels very good and this is backed up with some incredible world creation, it features some decent ambient lighting effects. When the games starts, (and it does so beautifully) you are in a small street and you have to navigate to the front of the hotel… it’s not far away, but I’m surprised the DEV hasn’t used this opportunity to create a small control tutorial to help the less experienced gamer get into it more, and a nice prompt for the player to begin would have been welcomed. Inside the hotel, this is where the game jumps leaps and bounds, after speaking to the manager and getting your key card, you have to find your hotel room, (not difficult) but personally I found this brilliant, it gives you the layout of the hotel and it shows again the detail and time injected into this game which I assume has taken the creator an extremely long time to design and compile, on a side note, I sincerely hope the developer has several backups of this source code! Upon entering your room you can explore and open doors and wardrobes etc. and it also features a nice touch with item interaction, where you can pick up and item and rotate it 360 degrees, perhaps this is for finding clues etc. Now this is where the review is going to not be a little vague because I don’t really want to talk about future things without ruining your exploring experience. A few things that stand out for me is that you need to use the light switch…. The idea of the game is to find out what’s causing the strangeness, you have an insanity meter and this increases if you stray out of the light... when exploring you can find spirit fragments, there is a few to find… all will be revealed after your exploration. One thing that I like about this game, is you have clues etc. and you have to figure things out for yourself, I also like the fact there is no arrow pointing to your next objective. I really hate it when games practically guided you around, it feels like your just following a script. But no, this is do what you think is right, well done dev! I really like this game and I am really stuck in a certain area, again without ruining your experience it’s certainly worth a play if you like puzzle / exploration and nice looking ambiance… Couple of bugs; I found in some areas that it was impossible to move, it seems like some kind of bug perhaps interaction with floor tiles, this can get annoying in areas, however it can be quickly fixed by pressing the tab key (inventory screen) then closing it again. I found the game play overall to feel nice, however sometimes a touch laggy in certain areas; in the sense I was underpowered to play it. (I am water cooled high end system) perhaps it’s the amount of entities, NPC…and lighting effects, perhaps the world just needs a bit of optimisation, like a clean-up of hidden overlapping textures and hidden skyboxes or something, however, the game is more than playable and it just sometimes feels in parts that its skipping a frame or to. I rate this game 7.5 out of 10 and I would certainly bump it up a bit more if a few of the bugs were squished. I would also like to have seen support for screen resolution 3440x1440 (the game does support 2560x1440). I would personally like to thank the developer for giving me access to the game and for allowing me to share my experience. Time permitted I will play this game again. A very slow paced game walking is too slow n the story is too slow but if u r looking for a game to waste alot of time on this is the game for u
Edit: revised review. It's still a thumbs down because of several issues, but it's not a 0 out of 10 anymore. Room 208 is about some medium who's able to walk in 'the other world' and talk to ghosts, seemingly to help people out. No further background is given. You're asked to investigate Room 208 in some luxery hotel because strange things are happening there. The game looks very good though faces, ghost and demon are low budget. There's a lot to discover and just like the games The Inittiate 1 & 2 you'll need to gather clues from different rooms to progress. Some puzzles are quite easy, others did cost me a lot of time. Overal, I think the puzzles were fine. Mood is tense. A bit too much. Reason: lighter fluid (or the lack thereof) and a sanity meter, requiring you to get back to a light source as quickly as possible. And this happens way too many times. You´ve hardly any chance to explore or think about puzzles because both the lighter and sanity are going down FAST. And there isn´t enough lighter fluid in the game to keep strolling around. In fact, I had to start over two times. The first time to investigate everything as far as I could, then run out of lighter fluid, effectively locking you out of the game. Second time I made some errors which cost me another run. And the third run was basically a speed run and lots of menu pausing to read the next thing to do from my own notes. Why I don't recommend the game boils down to these issues: Terrible gameplay decisions: - You're constantly on a timer by lack of both lighter fluid and sanity pills (mostly the fluid). And these go down FAST! - Light intensity from the lighter quickly diminishes even halfway before it runs out and the game gets incredibly dark (there's no brightness slider in the menu). - You need to restart an entire area if you get caught. - There's no manual save. Once you're out of lighter fluid, you'll need to start from scratch on a new save. Bugs: - Some things are named incorrectly, including colors. - When interacting with objects, they sink in or are partially obscured by the tables or cabinets they stand on. - Escape for main menu mostly doesn't work.. often need to press it several times to trigger. - There's a crouch button [C], but it's not mentioned or configurable in the key bindings. - The save system doesn't save evereything, you can lose progress because of it. - Sometimes, essential items can't be placed where needed or bug out when misplaced, resulting in a permanent error message on screen and possibly a soft lock preventing you from finishing the game. - A few broken achievements. It's highly likely that you either get extremely frustrated by the gameplay or simply can't finish it because of game breaking bugs. 3/10 - could have been good but was released in a broken state and never fixed.
No puedo recomendar este juego. He intentado darle más de una oportunidad, pero el juego es confuso, con unos puzzles que dependen más de la suerte que de la habilidad. Además falla en lo más importante, no es divertido.
Mostly Negative? I loved this game! Total recommend if you play with anyone watching, it creates a lot of speculation. I played it on my channel and it got a good response from fans too! What to Play Next
Although there are a few issues with the game play, I'm working my way through it and enjoying it thoroughly. The graphics are superb and I'm having a lot of fun with the puzzles which I think are very cleverly thought out. Keeping the lighter fuelled long enough to do a complete search of the various areas in the game is a real challenge and has had me starting a new game on several occasions each time avoiding having to search unrewarding areas. All in all great fun though and I'd highly recommend this game.
