Pretty much everything about this game is terrible, which is a great shame, since the first Initiate was almost decent with a few clever puzzles and some interesting design choices. The sequel had a fantastic idea of playing as several characters stuck in different but neighbouring rooms helping each other, but it was seriously let down by bland and unoriginal puzzles. Well, in Room 208 the inspiration has completely left the developers. The story is nonsensical and doesn't explain anything, the voice acting is horrendous, the writing is atrocious and still ridden with spelling mistakes. The puzzles require no logical thinking whatsoever, only observation. Most of them have been blatantly taken from previous games (arranging candles, rotating pictures, taking out books from a bookcase and so on). The idea of using lighter and having to refill it in order not to die in the darkness is also lacklustre. Since you have no quick saves, you just have to carefully go through each location, use all your refilling liquid to study it, then load the game and do everything that's necessary but ten times faster. Obviously, the game doesn't reward exploration and constantly hurries you to an extent that even forgets about some puzzles, which you don't have to solve at all. The jump scares are awful and take away everything from the alleged 'horror' atmosphere. Startling isn't how you make a creepy game. If you want some good puzzles, play the first Initiate. If you already have, stay away from Room 208 by all means. 3/10 is quite generous for it.
Deceptive Games Ltd. is an indie gaming company that I've become familiar with over the years. Alone? (2016) and Silent Descent (2018), two of their previous releases, were given positive reviews in my curation, and while they passed me a code for another game called The Initiate, I just never got around to playing it. The company are known for their horror puzzle titles, and their most recent endeavour, Room 208, is no exception to this so-far-established rule. In Room 208, you play as a psychic medium named Victor Rockford, who has been asked to come and investigate the mysterious room in a hotel in Fleetwood Vale. Poltergeist activity has been observed in the room by previous occupants, so it's up to Victor to figure out exactly who, or what, is causing the mysterious haunting. To do that, he'll have to solve an array of puzzles and visit different versions of the room by travelling interdimensionally via crystal balls. Each version of the room has unique enigmas to resolve, and upon resolution will give Victor pieces to the puzzles of other room versions. There is a sanity meter in effect, which depletes the more that you witness paranormal events and stay in the dark. You can replenish your sanity by standing in the light. You also have a small lighter to illuminate the area and keep the poltergeist at bay. The ghost only really starts appearing more towards the middle and the end of the game, and it's worth saying that his character model is... hilarious at best. There's nothing spooky about this entity, and you'll probably catch yourself laughing at any of your encounters with him. In fact, there's not really anything scary at all about Room 208; sure, there's the odd glass shattering, vase dropping off a shelf, or book that goes flying across the room, but ultimately there's just somewhat tense background music that attempts to rile up the scary-factor. And as many of my followers always urge me to point out: yes, the enemy is a one-hit kill type. The unfortunate aspect here is that you're always working on an unseen time limit. There's not a true timer, per se, but rather you have a limited amount of pills to restore your sanity and fluid to refill your lighter. These items are scattered around the environments, so while exploration is key, you shouldn't spend too much time exploring, lest you go insane or run out of light, or both. These mechanics put a bit of a damper on the experience that the game tries to offer, as it rushes you through its campaign. Of course, if you're pretty good at puzzles or you already know what you're doing, there will appear to be an abundance of these items scattered around, and you may even finish with some spare pills and fluid at the end, but just barely. In addition, there is no true pause button to this game either, as the game is still fully active when you are in the menu screen. When it comes down to it, Room 208 isn't Deceptive Games's best work. Even though their first title, Alone?, had a plethora of problems, it still had a charming scariness to it that finds itself lost and unrepresented in this release. There's a much higher focus on puzzles this time around, with everything else coming secondary, and that makes it feel a lot more like a more in-depth The Room release, or any other 'escape the room' game. There's about an hour-and-a-half to two hours of content here, three tops if you find yourself having a difficult time finding some solutions, and the majority of it is simply spent combing over minutely different variations of the same location. It's worth stating that the puzzles are pretty good, and it's nice to play a puzzle-centric horror title that doesn't think finding keys constitutes as "puzzle solving"; there's a great range of unique mechanics here that'll tickle your brain, but be ever mindful of how long you're spending on each one due to the lack of pills and lighter fluid. In the end, you should only pick this one up on sale, and only if you're into escape the room style puzzle games with a horror undertone. Better luck next time, Deceptive Games.
As a medium, you were hired to investigate the evil that lurks in Hotel Room 208. If you played previous titles of Deceptive Game you will notice that this time the Room changes when you activate one of the 3 portals. The game focuses mainly on puzzle solving and horror jump scares and events. This title is an improvement from the amazing Silent Descent because this time the game has more of a storyline with actual characters. If you love solving puzzles in a horror environment I highly recommend that you purchase this game. Well i liked it 8/10 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4zIVq31nGs&feature=youtu.be Pros: - Puzzle - Ambience - Graphics - Sound / music - Story Cons: - The hotel receptionist Jaon or Jason because of a spelling error has big flaws like lips out of sync and one simple animation. - Some puzzles are hard but this might be a positive for others. - Well i had to find bad stuff too to be fair...
Too many bugs for this to be on sale. The game also requires you to keep replenishing consumable resources, which is kind of annoying if what you want is to solve the challenges and so on. This one needs to be pulled from the shelves and subjected to a lot more play-testing.
For the price point that this game is at there are far better experiences to be had. The graphics of this game are beautiful and the voice acting is great, but beyond that there's not much else good to say. The mechanics of it are clunky and the choice of having your sanity meter go down even with the lighter out is abysmally infuriating. Every few seconds into a puzzle you have to run back to a ball of light as it's your only true light source and the only thing that will make your sanity go back to normal. The dude you're playing as only lasts bare seconds in the dark even with his lighter despite being a psychic who's likely used to these things--at least, he never sounds fazed when he has his voice lines. While one scare got me, it was unsatisfying. All the noises are canned and repetitive, with no real danger and they only serve to irritate you. For the price asked of this game you could play two other indie horror games that have more scares and more satisfaction than this one has to offer.
This game is completely broken and unplayable. I should have listened to the other reviewers, but I've enjoyed Deceptive Games' other titles and was too tempted. I feel like a sucker. I'm sad because this game could have been amazing if it wasn't so broken. But I'm angry because this is so amazingly broken that it should not be sold. Deceptive Games, please do the right thing and remove this from Steam. Stop ripping off other innocent fans. Because, as it stands, you are living up to your name. And, by the way, the most infuriating breakage here is not due to bugs, but due to an incredibly awful design decision! The whole game is essentially on a timer. When the timer runs out you are left in the dark and the only way forward is to start a new game. So, I guess the expectation is that players would fail at some point, then restart and race to do everything quickly to get to what stumped them the last time. Rinse and repeat. It's hard for me to think of a worse way to play a puzzle game. To add insult to injury, the description says "Full 4K support with volumetric lighting". Ahem, no, the game tops at 1440p, not 4K. Because if you're already deceptive, why not go all the way?
Way too glitchy, very frustrating.... it's too bad because looks like it would be fun
Not a bad attempt at mixing horror with puzzles. The puzzles are decent, some can be difficult, which I prefer. Hate having my hand held. Jump scares are "OK" and wouldn't say they were predicable or anything but are nothing special however the atmosphere more than makes up for it. Overall a decent attempt, solid 7/10. Pros: - Atmosphere is great. - Sound. - Puzzles. - Mix of tension and puzzles. Cons: - Proof reading. - NPC animations.
