I want to like this game, but it's a case study for frustration. It's cool, it's stylish, it has potential, and I want to love it so badly, but it's just frustrating. Not because it's hard, but because it's janky. There's no indication if you inexplicably get out of 'fight' mode or if the game is otherwise paused or not, aside from a far-too-small icon in the corner, which I find keeps frustrating the flow of the game, especially if I'm trying to do some cool zipline move with the rope or the only enemy I'm fighting loses line of sight and I'm suddenly in real-time without knowing it. There's also some other weird quirks with the controls that keep putting me off. Cancelling jumps or choosing not to move during a turn comes to mind. You can press W to use the computers but not to get in an elevator? Not to mention, I can't count the number of times I've been in a fight and gotten killed because my character moved 3 inches to the left instead of actually jumping off of the platform. The forced 'limit break' moves are also annoying, and even though it's generally a helpful thing to have, it's not always the best option at your disposal. I can think of plenty of times when shurikens or a sword throw would have been preferable to having another move that may or may not actually be useful at the time. All in all, I love the concept, there were definitely fights that felt satisfying and fun, and it had some cool moments, but having to constantly wrestle with the game didn't make for a fun experience. If I had to describe it, it would be like playing Hotline Miami except with guns that randomly jam on you. At the price point it's being offered at, it's not a bad deal, but I can't help but think about what a little bit more polish could have done for it.
Playing through this game normally, I found it to be really fun, with a great mix of stealth and turn based combat that really made me feel like a killing machine, wiping out buildings full of bad guys, dodging bullets effortlessly. It's a simple game with enough depth to last through the main campaign. Completing the game on new game plus, by contrast, i felt every flaw and inconsistency of the game acutely. Not all the time, granted. The standard, non-boss levels were a touch more challenging, but still overall enjoyable. It's the boss stages where I struggled not only to complete the stage, but to find the motivation to try again over and over, hoping that this time I won't get spotted by an enemy randomly whipping around to see me stealth kill their mate. Still, I did it and now I can stop playing this game forever. I would recommend it only as a casual playthrough. I didn't have much fun with the new game plus but maybe you will.
One of the first games I 100% completed. Very fun violence based puzzle game!
I wanted to love it, but I couldn't. The many annoyances make this game not as good as it could be. I wish they would release a patch or a remake that this game truly deserves. PROS - unique turn-based action game mechanics - nice, fitting visual style - quick, unlimited retries - runs well on Steam Deck CONS - many small bugs. I often ended up on the other side of an otherwise solid wall or floor after a jump or swing. - sometimes the game decides to switch to real-time mode during combat. By the time you realize it, you might lose 2-3 seconds, which usually results in a retry - sub-optimal control scheme that you can't change in-game. For example, you can cancel your started move by pressing the right stick. But if you move the stick the slightest to any direction while you are pressing it will jump/swing to that direction instead, which usually results in a retry - no Steam cloud save. You will loose your progress even if you change the Proton version! Don't forget to backup before you uninstall it or change the compatibility libs.
No to dzięki za info.
Ronin is a game that showcases its flaws, rather than its strengths. Frequently you will have to switch between turn-based and real-time movement, with both requiring precision in the middle of combat, virtually no controls in common, and almost no indication of which one you need to use. With such precision being necessary, it's frustrating when jump indicators don't factor in environmental information (things that will slow you down, or kill you outright). Or when your grappling hook bugs out, and clips you through a ceiling. The story is minimalist, but still doesn't surprise you the way that the first Hitman game did, so the few beats that are there don't have much punch. That said, this game *is* more than just the fusion of Gunpoint and Hotline Miami that clearly inspired its gameplay, and the soundtrack and visuals are on the upper tier of indie games. I'd feel bad about not recommending this one, if it weren't so old at this point. Get this one on sale.
