About
ROGUE-FP is a blend of old school classic roguelike gameplay with new school first person controls and perspective. There is no movement grid and no rigid turn system to slow you down.
The Fighters guild has a high bar for entry. They want you to delve deep into the Dungeons of Doom and return to the surface with the Amulet of Yendor! A perilous quest few have completed, for within the dungeon are terrible monsters, devious traps, and mystifying magical items.
To survive you'll have to identify the dungeon's items, navigate it's procedurally generated dark labyrinths, and fight your way past it's monsters. With enough skill and a decent amount of luck they say it can be done. Give it your best shot!
Just like in the roguelike days of yore, there are
Procedurally generated levels!
Perma-death!
More than an alphabet's worth of monsters!
Many magic items with different effects including rings, weapons, potions, scrolls, and wands!
Yummy slime molds!
But in ROGUE-FP there’s also
First person controls
A innovative smooth turn system
No grid to restrict your movement
Multiple bonus dungeons
Hacked off bits of monsters to stick onto your armor
ASCII art sprites
Dungeonsynth soundtrack
A difficulty level for every level of skill, including one that removes item identification
Your personal gold hoard that grows larger with every run

Quite unique take on a classic rogue-like, liking it!

Do you like the original Wolfenstein & Doom? What about turn-based dungeon combat & loot? Does the idea of a Doom dungeon crawler that functions like Super Hot sounds interesting? Then this remake of Rogue will do it for you! As someone that's had their first exposer of Rogue-likes/lites from playing Diablo I back in the late 90s and not really a fan of the originals this has somehow clicked in a very pleasant way. So glad I gave this a shot to see where my love for the genre originated from and to see the OG get refreshed with new modern mechanics has hit a joyful spot I didn't think an early 80's game could ever do! The new mode "Dig Dungeon" is the bread and butter of this remake as it changes the basic procedurally generated rectangle room level layout into a more complex & non-square dungeon you tend to see in modern Rogues. The escape of being on a turn-based grid system and is now based on movement makes every millisecond of navigation matter ever more in a good way. A window of information pops up for each enemy you encounter to help you understand why things happened and the crosshair that changes color to tell you that you're within striking range adds more excitement before an encounter begins! It even add more challenge compared to the original mode in a fun way. My first run on Classic I made it to floor 11 without much of an issue as oppose to the new mode where I'm lucky to reach floor 3 BUT that's a good thing since it makes every floor you reach feel so rewarding. Weird how that works lol. Pleasant music (changes when enemies are nearby), delightful ASCII tile art (preferred over pixel style), great 3D physics when you slay enemies that gives the game more life, ambient particles in the air that float around you, easy to understand UI, movement is solid, actions are not confusing, great tutorial to help you with the basics (if you're afraid of getting confused like I was this bridges that learning gap by a lot!) and most importantly all this together along with the original Rogue RNG mechanics brings tension with every run! This is coming from someone that plays games like Enter the Gungeon, Diablo II, CS, Arc Raiders, Deep Rock Galactic, HellDivers II, all kinds of modern FPS and classic turn based games. Worth the asking price, no need to wait for a sale to save a dollar. You owe it to yourself to see where the roots of this genre came from. Edit: To the devs, please add an option for the fullscreen map to match how the minimap looks. I love looking at the old school ASCII text at the lower left of the screen while playing in Hybrid mode but both Texture and Hybrid on fullscreen map just... doesn't fit IMHO. It will also make it easier & faster to read the layout since I rely on the minimap's simplicity.
solid RL fun
Awesome game, true to the original.
Incredibly well executed first person version of Rogue. Good QoL, beautifully done graphics (The hybrid set immediately blew my mind at how cool it looked), and awesome synthy soundtrack if you like that kind of music. I would 100% buy the OST if I could. Very impressed overall and love how clearly passionate the dev is, frequent bug fixes and updates.
I love this. So much fun to play Rogue again
significantly more immediately understandable than the original rogue, and quite fun to boot
This game is a legitimate surprise to me, and I mean that in the best possible way. I was more or less expecting a one to one remake of the original "Rogue" and how wrong I was. So many quality of life improvements were made to this fantastic remake from actual graphics, to better controls, to even having a difficulty options menu for those not as hardcore. The core gameplay of the original "Rogue" stays pretty much the same, just in a first person perspective. Explore, kill monsters, loot. It's an addicting cycle that had be continuing to play repeatedly even after death. The game looks beautiful with it's pixel art, and that visual is the cherry on top of this fantastic game. Overall this game is incredibly good, only held back by it's simplistic design due to it being a remake of the literal first "Roguelike" ever made which makes that forgivable. I personally can not wait for the next game release from this developer after playing this game, especially if it's a fully original Roguelike dungeon crawler.
It really be Rogue in first person. Plenty accessible with its difficulty options, however, and has some good dungeon synth to set the mood.
