I put off buying and playing this game for so long thinking it was some kind of gimmicky side project for the devs based on what i saw in the trailers and instead focused on other 'Vulkaiser goodness' that the same devs have made spades of in other titles happening in the same universe. No time wasted there as the Gogoh will always be in need of some melee weapon, gun powder and heavy laser based humbling but clearly i should have looked more closer to this title as it is now after a quick 'easy' game up there on the list of my favorite combat focused metroidvanias. Rocketron is cheap, on sales often and very easy to pick up and play and it is one of those games where you are not really ever stuck. You do need to hunt for upgrades to reach areas, key cards, secrets and all that but it is not the main focus. You solve exactly 0 puzzles in this game which is a good change of pace. But you do need to haul a*s all over to reach places and explore. Good well balanced combat is the main thing here along with big bosses flinging a lot of heat your way which breaks your weapons. Oh this one is a good one: Game has a major mechanic in that weapons you carry have durability and the weapon you use right now takes damage when you take damage. So you need to worry about your own health bar + health of your current weapon. (Melee weapon and basic gun doesn't take damage). No healing at save points. Basic rapid firing assault rifle and shotgun can take a few hits but the guided shuriken and laser that are the most useful tools in the arsenal goes down quick. And stays down too for a long time so you are constantly collecting health for both yourself and to distribute some to your dead weapons. Some people have complained about this in their review. I do not agree, it just means your skill ceiling has been met. Either lower difficulty or fight and improve your tactics! Some really tough fights take place every now and then and they are most enjoyable. The breaking weapons mechanic is the game calling out those who spend all their upgrade points on just one weapon -> Very nice, you can still do your 'glass cannon' setups but now you must pair your setups with proper maneuvering skill as well! So one way or another you are forced to use the whole plethora of weapons you have or git gud with the movement. Particularly when the skill level is any level above Easy. So to sum it up: It is not a puzzle focused game as most of this genre games out there but more of a combat focused one and it's a very good one too. Completely overlooked it seems. Well don't overlook it! - look straight at it - and buy it. It wont cost you much but the action is good and difficulty is easy on you for your first ride. Cons? No major ones that i see but i did 'stumble' upon the ending when i was just exploring on my first run trough. Wont happen again though and i will fire this one up for more difficult runs.
0/10 it just doesn't work
Nota 6.5/10. Recomendo!
"Full Controller Support" Well, that was a lie. I love Astroport and I even consider this to be one of their best, but it's hard to condone a modern PC game that many players can't get to work with Xbox One or X360 pads. It's even harder to condone a game that claims it does. Look. it's good. If you're happy to make a steam controller workaround, you'll have fun. But that kind of misinformation makes me feel a little icky and I struggle to let it slide. Hoping the negative review might encourage a rethink or a fix.
Smooth experience. The life/ammo system is pretty original and you can chose which weapons you want to upgrade, depending on your playstyle.
weirdly enough, i like this game. Just please never make music again. I would have loved a game with a lot more work on, legit it's just a good base, with interesting gameplay ideas and weird (WEIRD) controls
Fun little game. I wish it had some teleport system but pretty good as it is!
Astro Port decided to experiment with a Metroidvania here: although less complex than other games of the genre, most of its basic building blocks are there, like a map and upgrades to enhance traversal and offensive abilities. The protagonist works for an organization first seen in Steel Strider and is even assisted by the same AI, fights a cult connected to the original big bad of Vulkaiser but the villain of Zangeki Warp appears involved too; however, it's set a few years before the latter game, and an enemy is clearly an evil version of the ship/mecha from there, which raises a lot of questions. The player makes use of a device called Rocket Musket that works like a multi-directional jetpack as long as there is energy, quickly recharged by landing on the feet for a little while; amusingly, when out of juice a sound like a failing lighter is heard. On the front side, the device has an interchangeable arsenal that comprises, by the end, 8 different weapons including a laser drill. All of them have infinite ammo but the trade-off is that, save two, they are connected to the player's health; generally, the more powerful the currently held weapon is, the less hits it takes to lose it, until enough health icons to repair it are collected. While health, movement speed and weapons can be upgraded with crystals found all around the maps, the rocket depends exclusively on power-ups found while exploring, making possible to cover increasingly long distances. Maneuvering around obstacles in all directions is one of the most fun aspects of the game. Maps and special visors allow to discover secret areas. The style of most AP games is recognizable but it's been made more colorful and "cartoonish". Music is quite forgettable though, they can do much better than that. The initial speed of the character is incredibly low, forcing to use lots of upgrade crystals on speed. It makes traversing the early parts a slog. The weapon system, while fine on paper, is incredibly annoying not just because being hit means losing a weapon that can make the difference in a tight situation, but also because it takes lots of healing items, well beyond restoring the health to full, to just bring a weapon back online, and the chance of enemies dropping them is fairly low; health items left behind by bosses are often not even enough for the character. Worse, save points do NOT heal or repair. At one point there is a boss you can only lose against, after a cutscene you have only the basic gun and the drill, and must repair all other weapons. There are some sections clearly made to farm those items but to make them even more annoying, going out and back in them is accompanied by very slow screen transitions. It's not even some technical issue but a choice as, in case of death, the transition to the most recent saved position is very quick. The level design is quite simple, with a low "density" of maps. The map displays only the current section and doesn't allow to see others. Also be careful as some rooms with items you can't access yet, still count as explored in the map. Long stretches of time can be spent just wandering or with the aforementioned health/repair farming. It can be finished in a couple of hours and yet it feels padded. The localization is buggy, as often text boxes will show up with nothing, including in important cutscenes and in the endings. AP games have never shined in their stories and in how they present them, but here you are just left in the dark in a game that has a bit more of it. The touch of the developers is still recognizable, and I've had genuine fun with the rocket. There is also great potential for speedrunners or hardcore challenges, especially if one goes for spending the least crystals for upgrades as possible. But the thumb you see here is certainly not the same I've given to Zangeki Warp, Wolflame, or any other of their previous games; it should be rather pointed sideways. I can't fault Astro Port for having experimented but for the first time, it seems they bit more than they could chew, making Rocketron their weakest game to date.
Fun retro game, the upgrades and gameplay loop feel super satisfying even with some odd design decisions. I would like to note that the story is clearly incomplete in English, later sections of the game have placeholder dialogue boxes including the final message of the game which you get after beating it, so that was a little disappointing. Good time though.
