Rivers of Astrum is a story that I've had in my head for 30 years. In that time it has been written, re-written and revised countless times, as it has evolved over the years. My three big passions are art, storytelling and creation in general. This is a passion project that I've been working on (in some form or another) for nearly 7 years.
Rivers of astrum is a long-paced story. It has ups and downs just like any other, but this story is intended (in it's final form) to encompass 6 volumes. "Daughter of Darkness" is volume 1 of the Rivers of Astrum Saga.
I am thoroughly interested in any and all feedback anyone may have, as I've received precious little of it. I also love to engage with the players, so please - if you have any concerns or questions at all - feel free to reach out!
It is worth noting that I have a standing agreement with the lead voice actress in the game. She voices NSFW scenes at her own discretion, and stops wherever she chooses. This does lead to some partially voiced NSFW scenes, but I personally feel like that's an infinitesimally small price to pay for the talent and immersion that she brings to the project!

This dark fantasy visual novel is an early-access gem that’s still finding its sea legs, but oh boy, it’s already sailing strong if you’re into rich stories, complex women, and spicy romance. Also, shoutout to the dev for pouring 30 years of world-building passion into this project. That love shows.
About This Game

Storyline
You play as Kimberly Ashmoore—street-hardened rogue, pirate-town legend, and secretly soft lesbian romantic. Kim sets off to investigate a mysterious royal shipwreck, and things spiral into full-on destiny-mode real fast. Along for the ride are Cara, your half-elf lover with fiery vibes; Sandra, a pirate captain with flirtatious sass; and Vex, a mysterious elf scholar. Oh, and Dee, a talking squirrel, because of course. The plot kicks off quick but doesn’t sacrifice depth. There’s betrayal, ancient magic, pirate politics, and prophetic dreams. Every character has layers, and the way their stories intertwine with Kim’s choices makes this feel more like a fantasy novel than your usual adult visual novel fare.
Gameplay Mechanics
This is a classic visual novel setup with a big focus on meaningful choices. Some affect your relationships, others your morality, and a few lead straight to bad ends (thankfully, retry options are there to save your ass). There’s also a light exploration minigame and a whole affection/morality system under the hood.
Visuals & Audio
Character renders? Gorgeous. Backgrounds? Eh, they could use a little love. Animations are smooth and very much in the "less is more" category. The scenes look polished overall, and the higher resolution support makes everything crisp, even if transitions are sometimes just... black screens with a “moments later” tag slapped on.
Pros

Lesbian protagonist with actual depth (finally!).
Story that goes beyond just “sexy times”.
Stellar voice acting (seriously, listen to it).
Content filters let you tailor your experience.
Great character design and relationships.
Pirate + fantasy + LGBTQ+ romance = magic.

Cons

Limited content for now (about 2.5–3 hours of play).
Backgrounds and scene transitions feel a bit placeholder-y.
Animations aren’t as plentiful or varied.

Conclusion
Rivers of Astrum is like getting handed the first chapter of a beautifully written fantasy epic… only it’s a bit thirsty, proudly queer, and definitely not afraid to mix plot with pleasure. It’s not fully polished yet (early access, baby), but what’s already there is compelling, heartfelt, and sexy in a way that feels earned, not just tossed in. At its current price, it’s absolutely worth the trip—especially if you’re craving a fantasy tale that centers queer women, rich relationships, and a story with actual stakes. Whether you’re here for the romance, the pirates, the squirrel, or the steamy sexual content, Rivers of Astrum delivers just enough to hook you, and leaves you hungry for Volume 2. Bring it on. Rating: 9/10 Captain Jack Sparrow should’ve been a character! For full review head over to our website
It looks great but there's too much talking. If every conversation was cut in half, it would be more entertaining and move at a better pace. What we get is a bunch of people walking and talking or sitting and talking. It's a visual novel. Show. Don't tell. Spread out the exposition instead of dumping all of it early on. Don't tell us about the characters actions. Show us. The biggest problem is that it doesn't utilize the "visual" part of the "visual novel". If you have the characters running away from some bad guys, you don't need to have them detail their entire plan of escape. Just have one of them say "I have an idea! follow me," then show us. You have one conversation start during the night before they go to bed. They then continue the conversation the next day until it is interrupted by something. Then, they continue the conversation again after dealing with that. That means it took several in-game hours for these characters to discuss ONE topic. After a while, I just found myself skimming through pages upon pages of dialogue, then I gave up.

Alongside a colorful cast—Cara, the passionate half-elf; Sandra, the flirtatious pirate captain; Vex, the enigmatic scholar; and Dee, the talking squirrel—you’ll navigate tense negotiations, magical threats, and moments of raw intimacy. Your journey weaves political intrigue with deeply personal stakes, allowing you to define Kim’s legacy in Astrum—whether as its savior, its ruler, or its downfall.

[th]🏆Verdict:[/th]

Rivers of Astrum: Daughter of Darkness feels like the opening act of a much larger, carefully planned fantasy epic. The narrative already shows a level of depth and character work that many adult visual novels never reach, with every heroine having her own motives and growth instead of being there just for scenes. Early Access does show its limits — some transitions are abrupt, certain backgrounds repeat, and not every NSFW moment is fully voiced — but the strong writing, well-performed voice acting, and the rare focus on a lesbian lead make it stand out. The nearly 40 content filters are more than just a gimmick; they let you shape the tone and kinks of your adventure without breaking the story flow. For me, the most promising aspect is how the choices feel like they actually belong to the world — not just “pick a scene” options, but decisions that change alliances, romance dynamics, and how events unfold. If the next volumes keep building on this foundation, this could end up as one of the most memorable queer fantasy sagas in the genre.

[th]✅Good:[/th]

👍 Deep, branching story with meaningful choices 👍 Rare well-written lesbian lead in a fantasy setting 👍 Customizable kinks via content filters 👍 Professional voice acting adds immersion 👍 Strong cast with memorable personalities

[th]🛠️Could Be Better:[/th]

👎 Limited content for now (Early Access) 👎 Some backgrounds and transitions feel placeholder 👎 NSFW scenes not fully voiced 👎 Minimal interactivity beyond story choices 👎 Animations could be more dynamic

I absolutely love this! It's stupidly uncommon to find a renpy/VN game that has actual interactivity and lets you move around an environment. Yeah, it's pretty limited movement, but it's still there. The voice acting is fun and sounds great, love the music too. Seems to have a solid story going on. Really look forward to getting more of this gem :)
As a bi girl gamer when I read the info for this game, bc unlike others that write negative reviews and are apparently just swiping purchase like its Tinder without reading from seeing the pics XD, and I saw that the story was based on a LESBIAN MC, I literally squealed with excitement and bought SO FAST!! The story is seriously SOOO Good and the characters are seriously sexy AF and well voiced, yes that's what I said, the main characters in the game have a VA! The naughty bits are HOT AF and I was laughing from CAPTAIN Sandra Gale on so many occasions....she seriously might have outshone the MC IMO...def recommend ^-^
Rivers of Astrum: Daughter of Darkness is a dark fantasy visual novel developed by Paper Tiger and published by Paper Tiger Games L.L.C. that sets out to do far more than simply deliver a sequence of adult scenes. From the moment the story begins, it establishes a moody, morally complex world where magic, politics, piracy, and personal identity are deeply intertwined. Rather than rushing into spectacle, the game takes its time introducing its setting and tone, grounding the player in a realm that feels dangerous yet intimate. The narrative focus is clear: this is a story about power, desire, consequence, and the slow shaping of a protagonist’s identity through difficult choices, all wrapped in an unapologetically mature framework. At the heart of the experience is Kimberly Ashmoore, a protagonist who feels refreshingly human in a genre often defined by shallow player avatars. Kim is not merely a vessel for the player’s decisions but a character with emotional weight, vulnerabilities, and evolving convictions. As the story unfolds, the player’s choices guide not only her romantic and sexual relationships but also her moral direction and how others perceive her. Decisions frequently carry long-term consequences, sometimes leading to failure states or darker narrative paths that reinforce the game’s themes rather than undermining them. Importantly, these outcomes feel earned, encouraging experimentation without punishing the player with unnecessary repetition, which makes replaying different routes both appealing and respectful of the player’s time. The supporting cast is one of the game’s strongest elements, each character offering more than a single defining trait or narrative function. Relationships are written with care, allowing bonds to develop organically through dialogue, shared experiences, and moments of conflict. Companions range from confident, commanding figures to playful or mysterious personalities, and the interactions between them often reveal as much about Kim as they do about the characters themselves. Even lighter or comedic elements are woven naturally into the story, preventing the darker moments from becoming oppressive while still preserving the game’s overall tone. This balance gives the world a sense of life and unpredictability, making each conversation feel meaningful rather than transactional. Visually, Rivers of Astrum: Daughter of Darkness presents polished, high-resolution character artwork that places strong emphasis on expression and body language. Character renders are detailed and consistent, helping convey emotion even during quieter scenes. Backgrounds and environments, while sometimes less elaborate than the character art, effectively establish atmosphere and setting, whether the story takes place in shadowy interiors, coastal settlements, or mystical locations. Animation is used selectively rather than constantly, but when it appears, it enhances key moments without distracting from the narrative. The overall presentation feels cohesive, with a clear artistic direction that prioritizes mood and intimacy over sheer visual excess. Sound design further elevates the experience, particularly through its music and voice work. The soundtrack supports the emotional beats of the story, shifting subtly between tension, tenderness, and introspection. Voice acting stands out as a notable strength, lending authenticity and emotional nuance to scenes that could easily feel flat in lesser productions. Performances are delivered with confidence and restraint, avoiding melodrama while still conveying intensity when the story demands it. This attention to audio detail significantly deepens immersion, making character interactions feel grounded and personal rather than abstract. The adult content is extensive but carefully integrated into the broader narrative. Rather than existing in isolation, intimate scenes are framed as natural extensions of character relationships and story progression. A comprehensive customization system allows players to enable or disable specific content types, ensuring that the experience can be tailored to individual preferences without disrupting the story’s flow. This level of control demonstrates a thoughtful design philosophy, acknowledging that players may engage with the game for different reasons while still preserving its thematic integrity. Importantly, the erotic elements feel purposeful rather than gratuitous, reinforcing emotional stakes instead of replacing them. As an early access title, the game does show signs of being a work in progress. The current length leaves players wanting more, and some aspects—such as environmental variety or the consistency of animation across scenes—have room to grow. The interface, while functional, could benefit from further refinement to improve navigation and clarity. However, these shortcomings are outweighed by the strength of the writing, character development, and overall vision. The foundation is solid, and the ambition on display suggests a project that aims to evolve into something substantial rather than remain static. Taken as a whole, Rivers of Astrum: Daughter of Darkness stands out within its genre by committing fully to narrative depth, character-driven storytelling, and meaningful player choice. It respects its audience by offering both emotional engagement and customization, weaving mature content into a world that feels coherent and alive. For players drawn to dark fantasy, complex relationships, and visual novels that prioritize consequence over convenience, this is a compelling and promising experience that already delivers impact while hinting at even greater potential in its future chapters. Rating: 7/10

Criminally Underrated Gem – A Dark, Beautiful Journey Rivers of Astrum: Daughters of Darkness is one of those rare visual novels that completely takes you by surprise. It's atmospheric, emotionally intense, and beautifully crafted. A dark fantasy adventure that doesn’t pull its punches and isn’t afraid to dive into mature, morally complex territory. The writing is outstanding. Every scene feels deliberate and layered, with characters that are more than just archetypes. They evolve. They hurt. They push back. The world-building is rich and immersive, and the balance between narrative, eroticism, and character development is masterful. Nothing ever feels thrown in for shock value, everything serves the story. Visually, it’s stunning. The attention to detail in the environments, character expressions, and lighting sells the tone perfectly. The sounds complement the mood and adds to the emotional depth of the scenes. Rivers of Astrum: Daughters of Darkness deserves so much more attention than it’s getting. This isn’t just another adult VN, it’s a work of art wrapped in shadows, desire, and consequence. If you're even slightly into darker fantasy storytelling or narrative-driven adult games, you owe it to yourself to give this one a shot. A must play!
Great AVN, Paper Tiger! I love the new update! Can't wait for more!
