Rivals

This story is compelling and the right level of challenging. I finished it in a little over 2 hours, and don't regret it. My one complaint is that I REALLY would have appreciated subtitles. I have audio processing issues, so a dozen+ retro-styled audio files (e.g., bad mics and static!) without in-game captions meant that part of the puzzle was inherently harder for me than intended, and required more listens to catch what pieces were needed to solve the puzzles. Please consider accessibility in future releases, especially if using audio.

A short (2hrs or so) and sweet little puzzle game where you're a journalist piecing together the story of two musicians using interview snippets, magazine excerpts, a little bit of online sleuthing and your very own deduction skills. Nothing too challenging, but very engrossing for its duration. The music is also excellent: the Wilco/Uncle Tupelo influence of the story inspires the score as well, with a dash of mid-2000s artsy indie rock thrown in for good measure. The song snippets make me wish these discographies were real.

This game deserves some more attention. It's fairly short, I completed it in about an hour which might be fast, but it's got some neat little puzzles that require you to make inferences, refer back to things, or look things up outside the game. The music is pretty solid too, listening to the songs even helps you figure things out. Having to read a fake reddit post about someone's favorite albums in order to construct a timeline made me laugh. There's quite obviously some influence here from Obra Dinn. The only thing I didn't like was that you could put one guess on multiple different time slots, to increase your chances of having 5 right answers, which I think could prevent players from pinpointing the time in the intended way. If you like story puzzle games I'd check this out, totally worth 6 bucks.

Rivals is the commercial follow-up to the freeware game Family. Both are puzzle games where you pour over letters, interviews, voicemails, and more first-hand sources to learn the story of fictional musicians, in this particular case focusing on the rivalry between two alternative country musicians. These games work similarly to Return of the Obra Dinn in that you won't know which details you've figured out correctly until you have correctly assigned a set of five dates and titles, giving you hints about which ones you have right and wrong while discouraging brute-forcing the answers. The story in this one is a bit more linear than in Family, but it's still a classic behind-the-music story, and it's no less enjoyable an investigation that its predecessor.

Вот что я писал в обзоре на другую игру тех же авторов - Conspiracy!: берём Возвращение Обра Динн и упрощаем, уплощаем, во всех смыслах. Как и в многих других детективных играх упомянутых в видосе от GMTK тут надо распутать события, а точнее их последовательность... ...есть 20 событий и 20 дат, есть стартовая инфа в виде нескольких текстов и отрывка аудио, и возможность навесить до 8 дат. за 5 правильных дат игра фиксирует результат и выдаёт дополнительные тексты и аудио... ...на последнем отрезке игры становится совсем просто тк часть дат будут понятны а те что непонятны можно перебрать буквально одной перестановкой по остаточному принципу. такой вот примитивный геймплей основная сложность которого в "услышать что там в аудио говорят и распарсить акцент". ну из фишек - события иногда отсылаются к реальности и чтобы понять в каком временном периоде они происходят - возможно придётся погуглить что-то, банально узнать в каком году 16 сентября выпадало на субботу (условно). Но в целом тут не очень много "игры вне игры", да и вообще интерфейсно игра - это один экран, минималистичней некуда... ...и про тайминг - у меня ушло чуть больше двух часов, можно было успеть и рефанднуть, с другой стороны игра стоит копейки. Стоит ли она своих копеек? ну, кажется есть более хорошие и интересные примеры детективов, но и такой сойдёт. Я привёл здесь тот обзор почти полностью потому что он почти полностью подходит и к этой игре... но не совсем, сразу после "конспирации" я прошёл Rivals и посчитал что оно как предыдущее, но получше, сюжет теперь про жизненные отношения двух музыкантов, событий и дат стало 30, интерфейсно сделали поудобней, а ещё теперь кроме кассет и записок есть пара постеров с инфой, ну и до кучи есть несколько треков этих вымышленных музыкантов (одними из событий являются выходы этих треков например и среди записей есть их описания на форуме без упоминания названия, так что придётся послушать чтобы понять что там похоже на радиохед а что нет). История стала более приземлённой и понятной, это плюс и в общем я подумал что создатели сделали скачок в развитии а потом прочитал что это первая игра, а "конспирология" - вторая, так что видимо наоборот, была деградация. посмотрим что будет в третьей...

Rivals is a detective-like game, where your objective is to sort through recording tapes, songs and texts to piece together the story of two musicians and their relationship through the years. It's a short but really sweet game, and the story holds up well. One thing that I need to point out: The songs are AMAZING, really really good. I would listen to them while reading the texts and found myself wanting more. Clearly there was a lot of passion from the developers while creating this gem of a game. I bought it at full price and have no regrets. If you enjoy detective/puzzle games, don't think twice, this is an awesome game.

I've enjoyed this creator's previous game "Family", so I was looking forward to playing this. The tweaks to the formula made this a bit more of a slog than Family, to be honest, but for its price it's still a game worth playing if you're itching for some deduction.
