Incroyable. Bref jouez-y :)
Insurance inspection is not a profession I expected to produce one of the best games I've ever played, and yet. Return of the Obra Dinn begins with a merchant ship reappearing five years after vanishing, everyone aboard either dead or gone, and the East India Company wanting the paperwork settled. You get a ledger and a pocket watch that takes you back to the instant of each person's death. The rest is your problem. The job is deduction with no scaffolding whatsoever. Sixty souls, and not one of them wears a name tag or waits around to be interviewed. You work things out sideways instead: from accents, tattoos, who's bunking near whom, the belongings around someone's bed, or the fact that the crew is screaming “Captain!” at one particular man, which is the whole deduction, because the manifest lists only one. I spent an embarrassing amount of time on two sailors I'd narrowed down to a coin flip, staring at the same scenes over and over, convinced the tell had to be in there somewhere, until I finally gave up on logic and guessed. The book never corrects you. It waits. Fates only lock in when you get three right at once, which means you can be certain about someone for an hour before the book quietly refuses to confirm them, and then you realize your entire theory rests on a mistake you can't find yet. That's the trap, and I could not stop. The 1-bit art does a lot of quiet work. Every death scene looks like an engraving, and because all you can do is walk through these frozen tableaux and stare, you start noticing things you would miss entirely in motion. The game hands you its ending early and never really builds to a twist. You piece the shape of it together long before the last fates fall, and it seems to know that. What got me wasn't any single revelation but the getting there: the way the last few obscure sailors fall into place on nothing but a shoe and a hunch, and the book seals them in like it never doubted you.
once you've played return of the obra dinn you never stop wanting to beat
edward nichols
with your bare hands.
Its a good detective / deduction game where you play as an insurance investigator as you try to piece together what happened to the crew of once fully crewed ship in the middle of the ocean. The art style felt very cool at first, but slowly became problem as time went on as you are forced to notice every little detail. This art style really got in the way sometimes. Like it art style depicts black men as white at times which can be a real pain you are supposed to notice these things from skin color right down to the color of the sock! I had a lot of issues and was not going anywhere. But then I googled and told me to notice numbers on their hammock. That information helped me understand the game's language and from there I solved most of the fates of the crew. Some of stuff did I help and upon looking at it, I wasn't going to solve it anyways. So yeah, very unique experience , just wish the art style was more consistent and clear for the level of detail the game expects you to notice.
All the puzzling is about identifying the names/roles of the characters, which isn't a very interesting puzzle to solve. The interesting part (the story) is just presented to you. A clunky UI means this game is tedious to play, it feels like work. I can see this being certain people's favourite game but I am baffled by the Overwhelmingly Positive rating since I feel like most people would hate it. I guess it is only being played by people who love this type of game. I would only buy it if you're very sure that detailed detective work is fun for you.
