Return of the Obra Dinn is the best example I've ever played of a story-focused video game that fully justifies its medium. To try to sell you on this game too much would be to spoil the fun of experiencing it. A wholly unique visual style, incredible score, unflinching gameplay vision and maddening structure combines to create a video game I would not recommend to everyone, but if it clicks with you, then it will definitely click with you.
Quite possibly my favorite game ive ever played and without a doubt the most special gaming experience. Truly one of a kind game concept.
Incroyable. Bref jouez-y :)

Ever since I finished Outer Wilds, I've been chasing that feeling of solving a mystery instead of just playing through one. Everyone kept recommending Return of the Obra Dinn, and now I get why. At first I was completely lost. I didn't understand what I was supposed to do, who anyone was, or how I was ever going to identify 60 people. But slowly you start noticing little details.
Uniforms, accents, friendships, where people sleep, where they work...
and before you know it, you're connecting everything together yourself. The best part is that the game never treats you like you're stupid. It trusts you to figure things out, and when something finally clicks, it feels incredibly rewarding. I'm also really into drawing, especially black-and-white, high-contrast ink work, so I absolutely loved the art style. It's simple at first glance, but every scene is so carefully designed that it's impossible to forget. Huge respect to Lucas Pope for creating something this unique. Now that I've finished both Outer Wilds and Return of the Obra Dinn, I'm left asking the same question again: What's the next mystery game that's going to completely pull me in?
Amazing detective adventure with brilliant puzzles and a unique atmosphere. Perfect if you love point-and-click mysteries and logical deduction.
Absolute masterpiece of a puzzle game. I devoured it in a day neglecting sleep and work - like a good book, one of the few games to ever evoke that feeling in me. Almost everything about it is perfect. Graphics, writing, gameplay, etc. I only have two nitpicks - first one is guesswork/bruteforcing being too viable sometimes. Apparently I missed a clue to definitively solve a small chunk of the mystery without guessing. Second nitpick is the ending and the missing chapter being an underwhelming reveal. And that's it - it's one of the best puzzlers ever made otherwise. Go in completely blind and stay away from any discussions while playing.
The game is an absolute treat. It is so very very close to being a perfect game. I am in equal parts happy and sad that it fell just slightly short of being perfect Visually 10/10 The premise 10/10 The execution 8/10 The idea in and of itself has lots of intrigue. A detective in the 1800s investigating the loss of one of his majesty's ships. It was this premise alone that made me buy the game. The art style is great too, it really gives the game a creepy atmosphere. HOWEVER, I have three main gripes with how the game is executed. [olist] [*] When encountering a new scene, you are forced to sit around for a scripted fade out. I found that when this happened I either had too little time to do any deduction or too much time given the emptiness of the scene [*] The art style makes it very hard to read what's being shown sometimes. In particular:
fire and things on fire read very poorly
[*] I feel the game was needlessly obtuse and should have done more to communicate the level of detail that goes into a scene. A Rubik's Cube is hard on its own but it is a thousand times harder when you don't know the objective is to make all sides one solid color. Even the simplest puzzle can become impossible if you don't know the nature of the puzzle. In particular, you should pay attention to
outfits, shoes, accents, hammock numbers, even skin color (bearing in mind skin color is another thing that the artstyle makes hard to read)
[/olist]
