Survival is just the beginning. Six years have passed since the biological disaster in Raccoon City. Leon S. Kennedy, one of the survivors, tracks the president's kidnapped daughter to a secluded European village, where there is something terribly wrong with the locals.

After playing Requiem and being disappointed by it, I decided I should at least put out a review for this remake. RE4 2005 was my second game in the entire franchise (OG 3 was my first) and is one of my favorite games ever, but this ain't it. Don't get me wrong, I personally think the remake is a decent game ON IT'S OWN, but I don't like it as a remake. With me wishing steam had a neutral option out the way, I'll try and explain WHY I don't feel all that good about it. The gameplay. No more tank controls, but all the animations are long and smooth, cinematic. Good on paper, bad for the gameplay feel. The original had a ton of I-frames, but in this game you will often be put in a situation where you're parrying one enemy, but the moment you exit the animation another enemy hits you, or just in general you'd be dealing with one enemy only for more of them to team-pile you. And oh yes, the parrying. Awesome on paper, but terrible because Capcom, in all their wisdom, decided to give weapons durability, and the durability of said melee is VERY LOW without upgrades, obviously to prevent knife-cheesing. Then you have crouching, and crouching some attacks feels really ass, that's about all I have to say about them. By far the most offensive things about the combat re-imagining in this game are the crosshair bloom and shake and the lack of proper stagger on enemies. In the original you would have laser pointers for each weapon, so you could always tell who your shots are gonna be hitting. In the remake you still have that... But only for some pistols and unlockable for side-quest currency (yes, this game adds sidequests and marks stuff for ADHD brains like other AAA games of current age), aside from that you ONLY get a crosshair which takes quite a while to tighten up, and Leon seems to be a heavy drinker suffering from tremors. Don't get me wrong, his hands were shakey in the original, but often times you'll get the feelings bullets just vanish in this game and it's really dissatisfying to encounter. As for the stagger, yes, this game still retains limb-hit stagger, but in the main story (and Separate Ways) it feels really assanine and enemies don't slow down, they just shake as they move and that's it. With gameplay flaws that came to mind out of the way, I wanna bring up that in my humble opinion the game lacks artistic direction of the original, which is kind of a problem of the "realistic look trend", but I'd say it's a minor nitpick, seeing as Ethan games, for example, despite being realistic had some artistry to them. Remake 4 just feels... Dull? It's pretty, don't get me wrong, but it lacks an artstyle, especially with the UI elements being minimalistic. The characters. Here's where things split into 2 camps: some people like the "renewed" characters, some don't. I land in the latter. Leon in the original felt like a charismatic macho who's one-liners lightened the mood, but in this game... He just feels like an angsty teen's cool OC, and he sounds just the part. No shame to the voice actor, but MAN does this voice not do Leon justice. Sherry is... Ok, I guess, but she feels a little more independant in the game, she's about the only character I don't have any strong opinions on. Saddler was absolutely butchered as a story character. Remember all the dialogues between him and Leon in the original? Gone. He's basically a background character who you forget about up until the final fight. Krauser... O-oh that one stung me personally. OG Krauser felt like a betrayed wise soldier who's been scraping by on the evil side, but in the remake he's just an absolute lunatic with cliche voicelines, constantly calling Leon "rookie". Luis... I actually don't mind the new Luis, but I think a little too much emphasis was put on him. Right, I think this section is growing long, but I also can't avoid bringing up Ada. Like the new looks, but damn does her voice actress not care at all for what she's doing... She just sounds bad an I miss the "mysterious lady" aura she had in the original. Oh yeah, Wesker was also underwhelming, imo. So, with everthing out the way: the gameplay is ok, but it certainly suffered from the TLOU syndrome the franchise has been infected with, ALOT of characters and story bits were rewritten and/or retconned. On top of all that, several bits from the original Leon campaign are missing and are being sold as Separate Ways which... It's not bad, honestly, it's just not accurate to the original's story. Separate Ways is way better in the remake in my opinion. I gave my opinion above, it's a pretty good game, but I still prefer the original personally. I guess I just needed to get this weight off my shoulders in a review form.
