How many games have I played in my lifetime? More than I can remember. How many Rougelikes have I played in my lifetime? Quite a lot of them. How many games have I played where the final boss was Charles Darwin riding a velociraptor, and you could beat him by complimenting him to death? One. This one.
Back in the day I picked up the game after watching TotalBiscuits "WTF Is... - Renowned Explorers: International Society?" -video. It looked like lot's of fun and I had to try it myself. What did I know Renowned Explorers became one of my all time favorite games and it's still to this date the only game I have 100% achievements unlocked. The mechanics keep the game interesting like how changing the team captain changes your run a lot and you can play around so much with the crew composition. While I can now plan what crew I pick and decide on what expeditions to take and aim for certain outcomes, a new player can just pick up what sounds interesting and head out on an adventure to calm down the angry sheep and see what kind of secrets they will uncover from The Globus Cruciger. I personally love board games and to me this game has lot's of similar feeling to those. You pick up starting setup and build and optimize your strategy, but even well laid plans don't always end up like you thought. I recall one of my favorite expeditions was attempt to take on two 5 star expeditions with Victor on my team who has campfire story that allows you to take on harder expeditions than you could normally. It was quite the epic adventure, and I think I got my own highscores there. I am still waiting for Renowned Explores 2, thankfully Reus 2 has bit of the same feeling that I enjoy in this game so much, so that will keep me busy for a while.
Do yourself a favour and buy this game. The only strategy / tactics roguelike I've played that's in the same league as FTL. Not quite as easy to jump into as FTL, but then again it has much more in-depth and engrossing quests and side-quests.
It's hard to say if this game is bad or just not "for me," but I didn't really get enough fun out of my initial playtime to want to come back for more. Everything about the presentation(sound, music, graphics, animation) feels extremely generic, like I am playing a bottom of the barrel browser game, so nothing there really sparks joy. The writing is short and generic, and too much of it just feels lolrandom. lololol lmao ice cream truck in desert sports. That kind of humour. So the jokes fall flat and there's no drama or character development to care about. Mechanically there is a conceptually interesting game, something very along the lines of Quest of El Dorado(a board game), but due to being singleplayer, instead of being able to challenge the player with competitors, you're instead challenged by RNG, and you're often making relatively blind moves. Oh, yes, there's a BLUE EVENT here where a BLUE CHARACTER might help and then a completely BLUE character only has a 20% chance of a success and an 80% chance of a crippling drawback. But, you know, I could somewhat live with that if the turn-based combat livened things up instead. But the problem is that it's both almost 100% deterministic(only a few things have a possibility of different effects or missing) and very simple(physical attack, speech attack, special attack for each character's options, and their stats usually make one type of attack an obvious pick over the others) in a way that means barring completely freak incidents like 80% hit chance attacks missing, every fight is determined by your stats and buffs going in, not really by any decisions you make during. Once again, I could possibly have lived with this if the game was short, snappy and lent itself to quick restarts and playthroughs, but unlike FTL, where everything has a minimum of embellishment and is primarily text, here everything needs to be accompanied by fanfares, menu popups and overwrought, repetitive attack animations, which slow everything down. Mostly this just made me want to play Quest For El Dorado again. Anyone up for some board games?
Very fun. When killing is not the only option, and you can defeat your opponents in several different ways. Dynamic, changing-on-the-spot combat as well is a huge plus. Adaptation is required everywhere, on battle, local and global strategic map. 10/10.
You get to do a lot of layered decisions and decide how you approach any given problem. The visual style is charming and the difficulty feels just right. Give it a go if you like tactical combat mixed with turn based strategic planning.

Is very good! Feels like playing an Indiana Jones Movie, but with more fun character interactions and hijinks. Lots of room for figuring out cool strategies and synergies
