Rehtona
A series of cleverly designed levels and easily understandable mechanics makes this an enjoyable but fiendishly difficult puzzler. Curator Info:
Follow our curator page: OCG-Curations if you like and want to see more reviews like this one.

Pros:
👍 ❤️Levels are incredibly well designed and will cause maximum brain ache (in a good way). ❤️Tutorial system introduces you to any new puzzle mechanics. ❤️There aren’t too many mechanics to learn and the ones that are introduced are easy to understand.
Cons:
👎 ⛔It’s quite easy to accidentally push a block when trying to jump over it or move the block too far but there is a rewind button to remedy this. ⛔The illusion blocks cannot be deleted immediately. You need to tirelessly erase each subsequent move to eventually get back to the time you placed it.
Overall
I loved this game, but boy was it fiendishly cunning in places. I use the word cunning because it is so obvious when you come up with the answer but at the time you are convinced there is no possible way you can complete it. The amount of times I would shout at the monitor saying, “This is impossible!” but perseverance, or on occasions a handy walkthrough, always saw me through. Completing some of the levels after trying again and again felt amazing, and sometimes I genuinely felt tired from trying. I think this game has aged me. I was really impressed with the level design. They seemed to be arranged to cause maximum brain overload, but they were so clever. An awful lot of thought has gone into producing them. I tried looking at the screen and planning my moves in advance. This worked on occasions, but there was always something that I had missed. The illusion block was in the wrong place, a plant block halted my way of escape, or I was unable to push a block I thought would be moveable. There are a lot of things you need to consider and therefore a lot of things that can go wrong. The game is therefore trial and error. There are so many moving parts to the solution that you will rarely get it correct on the first go. That is part of the charm. You will need to work for that victory, but at no point does it seem unfairly difficult or unjust. There aren’t too many mechanics to worry about in the game. There are just enough to keep things fresh and entertaining without bogging you down. There is a useful tutorial which introduces each mechanic as you progress through the chapters and they are all explained very well and make sense. They can also be referenced again in the menu if you have forgotten. Any mistakes you make can be erased and you can go back as far as you want and erase as many moves as you wish. The only drawback of the game in my opinion was that you couldn’t immediately delete illusion blocks. You had to follow the procedure of deleting every move you performed afterwards. There are five chapters and 32 levels to “enjoy”. The game should take between 8 – 14 hours to complete depending on whether your brain has not exploded in the process. I would highly recommend this to any puzzle fan.
Story
The world is broken, and everyone has disappeared. A girl called Rhetona is trapped between two worlds and must collect memory pieces to find out what happened. There isn’t much of a story and it’s a little weak and slightly incomprehensible. It only acts as a side show to the wonderful puzzle elements, however. After each chapter you are presented with a short cut scene depicting events of what happened.
Gameplay:
🕹️ You will be able to travel to two worlds. The light world (or ordinary world) and the dark world (or world behind the gate). You start each level in the light world and the first thing you need to think about is how to get the key to open the door to the dark world. Once in the dark world you can collect the memory fragment you need to escape that level. In each world certain objects behave differently. For example, in the light world you can place illusions blocks which appear as stone blocks in the dark world; In the light world plant blocks are alive but in the dark world they are dead and therefore not visible; Purple stones only exist in the dark world and grey blocks only exist in the light world; Brown blocks are stable and appear in both worlds; Bubble machines are a handy aid to jumping higher in the light world but deadly in the dark world. The way objects behave differently in each world means you must think carefully about what type of block you place and where you place it. Ultimately your goal is to escape the dark world with the memory fragment, so you need to think how placing blocks in the light world will appear in the dark world. Will there be any obstructions from blocks that only appear in the dark world? Will you be able to push blocks where you need them to go or will you need to fill in gaps with illusion blocks? Will you be able to escape once you get the fragment? Quite often you will need to go to the dark world to see how your plan is working. If you have made a mistake, and you often will, you can either go back a move or restart the level and try again. There is a handy tutorial each time a new mechanic is introduced which is well explained and available for reference if needed. The mechanics you will need to use during the game are: Illusions – You will only have so many of these in each level indicated in the top left of the screen. It will always be between 1 and 3. You can place an illusion in the light world and these will appear as stone blocks in the dark world. They are useless in the light world. These are crucial to completing a level. Where you place these will determine success or failure. Bubbler pressure switch – When the bubbler switch is pressed in the light world a blue bubble will emit enabling Rhetona to jump higher. In the dark world a rapid succession of killer bubbles will rise unless the switch is pressed down. Cargo Box Switches - When the lever switch is pressed on, an unmovable box will drop from the sky and land on the nearest platform in line with the cargo box. If the platform disappears the box will fall further. Turn off the lever and the unmovable box disappears. You can use this as many times as you like but only one unmovable box can exist on the screen at any one time. Wall switches – A retractable wall will expand at a specific position and become a platform. The wall retracts when the lever switch is turned off. Gravity Areas – There are areas that are affected by gravity where Rhetona can only move sideways. A cargo drop will force object downwards and a high jump or fall will mean a deeper drop into the field. You generally get one mechanic per level but towards the end the game will throw a few at you at the same time. They are all used very cleverly and some of the solutions require some very lateral thinking. Often you will need to travel backwards and forwards from the light world to the dark world to tweak your strategy and complete the level.
Sound:
🎵 The sounds are very basic but adequate for a puzzle game.
Graphics:
📺 Again, they are basic but do have a charm about them. They’re perfectly adequate for what the game needs to do.
Conclusion
A complex and challenging puzzler that will have you scratching your head throughout. Not easy, but achievable with careful thought, and very rewarding when you complete a level. New mechanics are introduced at just the right time to keep the game exciting. If you like puzzle games this is an excellent example and highly recommended. This product was received free through Curator Connect.
A review copy was provided by the developer.

Follow my Curator page, Fruit N Doggie Reviews, so you can be updated whenever I post a new review.

Overall Rating - High Quality ★★★★☆

First Impressions
I wasn't really sure what Rehtona (RE) would be like, but the visuals gave me the impression of a really charming puzzle game. Ultimately, that's more or less what RE wound up being, yet with a distinct approach in its puzzle design. It impresses me how creative people can be for designing puzzles, and if you have the patience for it, can be some of the more unique and rewarding types of games to triumph in.
Gameplay
RE is a puzzle platformer, and unlike some games in that genre, doesn't focus on overly difficult or taxing platforming. A few stages could have been tweaked for easier mobility, but none of the puzzles are going to push the player's ability to make tricky jumps. Instead, the emphasis is much more on navigating stages and figuring out how you need to move the objects around to solve the puzzle. I know that when I'm already trying to figure out a mind stumper, I really don't want to mess with a difficult jump that wastes my time and attention span. The main focus of RE's puzzles is switching between the light and dark world versions of a stage, as there will be significant differences to the same layout. For example, the plants of the light world are immovable and solid, but they'll wither away in the dark. Before you can access the gate to transport to the dark world, you have to navigate the light world first and gather the key. Then you'll have to get the puzzle piece and make your way to Musii in the dark world in order to finish the stage. There are other examples, but some of RE's mechanics include block shoving, blocking instant kill lasers, creating platforms by copying yourself, destroying walls, and getting mad jumps on bubbles. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2796005168
Controls
In spite of how complicated things can get with a puzzle game, there's not that much to the controls; the sheer basics for platforming, activating her illusion powers, and rewinding your mistakes. Due to how some blocks were placed directly over head when you're trying to jump upwards, a few jumps were a tad annoying to make. I've also accidentally pushed blocks too far or started shoving them when I didn't mean to, but you get used to this and learn to avoid it. Aside from these minor annoyances, the controls handled well.
Story
There isn't really an introduction to what's going on in RE. Without knowing anything about the world around the main character, or her place in it, reality starts bending and acting out of sorts with no explanation as to what's causing it. As she interacts with different visions that emerge as you finish the jigsaw puzzles, it's still unclear for much of the game what's going on and whether she's talking to herself or some variant thereof. Despite the game mentioning a branching story line, it only amounts to two different endings based on whether you got every gem or not. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2796005534
Visuals
While looking at the over world map and town, RE really reminds me of a picture book. The simple townsfolk going about their business, a serene atmosphere, and what looks like a busy, developed location from the background buildings. Even when everyone is transported away the area still looks nice, and the dark world doesn't look horrific or nightmarish. With all the color sucked away it looks dim, and the floating buildings are disconcerting, but it's more like the light world gone a bit wrong than a sinister, evil dimension.
Sound Design
With how much concentration a puzzle game demands, I never noticed the music of RE while playing. Intentionally paying attention to it, I realized it's probably because the music is rather mellow and still. There's not a strong percussive element to establish a beat, and it sounds more like calm humming in some ways. You certainly won't remember it, but it does a good job of not diverting your attention. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2796005385
Pros
🌟 There will be puzzles that stump you for a bit or seem complicated. However, RE does a good job of not having too many moving pieces and variables to keep track of. Later stages do get tricky, but it avoids the pitfall of being so obtuse even replicating a video solution is cumbersome. 🌟 I really like how the character's hair has the appearance of someone's arms while running. It gives her character some visual interest and personality for a game where she's largely mute.
Cons
❌ Rewinding your mistakes is slower than I think is strictly necessary. The presentation for the game is more involved than I've experienced with others, but I still imagine it'd be possible for this process to be much faster. It takes around 10 seconds each step you want to roll back, so restarting can be faster in quite a few situations. ❌ It's super petty, yet I despise how those little birds fly toward me if I sit still and think. I know they won't move as soon as they land, but that subtle motion on the screen distracts me every stinking time.
Tips
🔍 When you can definitely rule out moves that you have to make, no matter what, it leaves less options behind on what is possible or what you have to accomplish. If you're getting stuck, it can be helpful to experiment between the light and dark worlds to see how different objects interact when going back and forth. It's not always obvious or works as you might expect. 🔍 One consistent feature to the design of the puzzles is how you can see them as having two distinct parts. The first is gaining access to the key and the dark world. This may or may not have some overlap with getting the puzzle piece, but focus solely on the key at first, and see how things change in the dark world. 🔍 Once you get used to how you need to approach these puzzles, the solutions become more obvious. For instance, not wasting a copy of yourself to make a platform when it's possible to use a replenishable crate to temporarily fill the gap instead.
Final Thoughts
Having finished RE, I'm glad that I finally got around to playing it. One downside I noticed was some inconsistency in the difficulty curve. Aside from some early boneheaded moments on my part, the game starts off easily enough, but I wouldn't say there's a consistent difficulty arc as you progress from one chapter to the next. Sometimes, with a bit of trial and error, I figured out the solution fairly quickly and painlessly, thinking the stage was rather basic. Other times though, even in a stage before that one, I'd look it over time and again and not be able to figure out the missing component or how I was going astray. However, when I was able to work out the puzzle, it made for an enjoyable bit of mind crunching. There's a few rough edges to the game, and it's fairly short if you break down and look up a walkthrough as needed like I did, but I'd still recommend it overall. It balances puzzle mechanics and platforming well, and that alone is noteworthy. 很棒,希望早日把手机版本的DLC拿到PC版本上,谢谢
Rehtona is a great puzzle-platformer, with crisp gameplay mechanics, clever level design, and beautiful pixel art graphics. However, if you're going to spend money on it, buy the mobile version. The desktop version is way outdated, has no extra content, and generally doesn't seem to be supported by the developers anymore. In comparison, the mobile game gets regular updates, and has way more content — tons of DLC levels, as well as a level editor — all of which can be acquired for about the same price as the desktop version. The only downside to the mobile version is that it's very demanding, so slower phones and tablets may have trouble running it. Update: as of April 2021, the mobile version has also stopped receiving updates. But otherwise, everything above still holds true, so I still recommend getting that over the desktop version.
More reviews on our Curator Page Rehtona or 幻境双生 in Chinese, it’s the very first game published by the Chinese indie studio Dot 4 Joy, and for those who think the Chinese market is mostly Visual Novels or MMO’s, seems it’s far from that, as new releases are coming up regularly! Rehtona is the perfect example of beautiful graphics, solid gameplay, and well executed puzzles. Above the clouds on floating lands, lives a young girl named Rehtona, taking her routine calmly and peacefully, she flies from cloudy islands on top of her friend Musii, a wooden eagle that has been with her since she was just a child. Together they fly across the skies, visiting neighboring cities, but one day, it all changes. Rehtona wakes up normally, puts on her panda cap, and flies off to catch the farmer’s market in the plaza, with her trustful companion! Upon arriving, a strange event occurs, and everyone disappears, leaving the curious girl wondering what happened. To make things further terrible, a strange stone gate rises, hiding a deep voice, that calls for her. Such weird occurrence will trigger her biggest adventure ever, traversing the realms in search for her true self. Rehtona delivers a simplistic but appropriate storyline to match the surroundings, which consists of the concept of change between two dimensions; The normal colorful world where the young girl is used to, and the obfuscous realm of mystery and darkness in which her mind floats, completely lost. As both ethereal realms collide, they both become affected, as Musii can no longer physically help Rehtona, until she unlocks her memories. Subsequently, she can’t advance until unlock the missing parts of the puzzle! The concept is simple, well executed and the presentation is quite appealing. Rehtona is above everything else, a puzzle-based adventure. There are a total of 32 levels to test your reasoning, logic and rationality. Even if visually it’s extremely soothing and appealing, some of the puzzles are quite challenging! Players control Rehtona, in 2D platform based levels, and the goal is to collect crystals, keys and ultimately, the puzzle piece. Crystals serve as collectibles and powers our protagonist, keys allows the player to enter the shadow world, and the piece of the puzzle represents another unlocked fragment of a memory. Sounds easy, doesn’t it? Well, it’s actually quite ingenious, particularly, when Rehtona learns new abilities, and therefore challenges become tougher as well. While in the shadow world, some objects may change, such as vegetation. But others might appear, creating new pathways, or blocking them. Things change and it’s how you deal with them that matters. Rehtona can jump, and double jump, push objects, and pull levers to manipulate crates. Her most useful ability is the capability of creating a reflex of her own image that will solidify in the shadow realm, becoming pure stone. This ability will become handy when platforming, but remember there’s a limit to how many times you can use it! Some of the challenges waiting for you include dangerous lasers, illusions to confuse you, gravity fields and some other interesting obstacles. Not all want you to fail though, some are playing on your favour, and others can become to your advantage. Thankfully, Rehtona can’t permanently die, so if you find yourself evaporated by some of those red lasers, worry not, no progress is lost. There’s also a Rewind function that pretty much does what the name suggests, it rewinds the player last action. This ability can be used as much as one needs, and can rewind the whole level, but sometimes it’s just better to start over. Control sensitivity is slightly higher, as sometimes just the slightest touch when moving our character near an object can make her push it, which that rewind option always serves well. It’s still worth mention as I’m sure a lot of people will feel the same, however… Taking in consideration the fluidity and speed of the game, I don’t necessarily feel this to be an issue. Visually, Rehtona is magic to the eyes, as those beautiful 16-bit and 32-bit pixels jump right in front of you. Heavily inspired by Asian culture, the design is fantastic, with tremendous details. One can see layers of distant content, such as buildings, cats on the roof, vegetation, a large variety of colorful houses in the back, and even adorable yellow birds that sometimes fly over to Rehtona and land on her shoulder. The design works were done with love, and it’s that obvious, even on material surfaces, it shows its passion through reflexes and contrasts used. Doesn’t matter, where’s the location, it will look stunning, with the obvious factor that the shadow world looks darker and grimm, as it was the purpose, but even then, there’s an artistic abstract sense of confusion among the dark ruins of thoughts and memories. Levels aren’t considered big, and they will mostly fit on your entire screen, even though there’s quite the room for experimenting several possibilities! Developed with Unity, we don’t have much in terms of customization… Audio volumes are either On or Off, with no bar to select the percentage desired, common among Unity games it seems. There’s also an option to use Fullscreen or Windowed mode, and since Vsync seems to be active by default, that’s all the options available. There’s full controller support, as its usual with the engine, which is perfect for these types of games! Rehtona it’s not just Another 2D puzzle game, it’s a testament of good quality games from worldwide studios. It’s hard to say how long one takes to finish the game, but there’s definitely content, at least for 5 or more hours. A journey that will take Rehtona to find herself, and discover secrets hidden behind strange mysteries, surrounded by a simple and an ambient soundtrack to inspire your concentration!
Introduction
Rehtona is an interesting puzzle game that experiments with different mechanics every few levels and isn't afraid to give you some really challenging levels, though sometimes tedious. Along with a great little story, and some cute graphics. (TL;DR Below)
Gameplay
Rehtona makes great use of simple cutscenes and dialogue to tell a simple story about their home world. There is nothing complex about the story at all, in fact the charm of it is because it's so simplistic. The cutscenes that play are great as well, there is no voice acting but it's all told with a little bit of text that is easy to follow. When it comes to the actual meat of this game, you'll be surprised to know that there is a fair amount in store for you. The puzzle mechanics that you learn aren't just dumped onto you in the first world, but rather each world has it's own different unique mechanic that you learn to use. I really liked this, as it adds a nice amount of variety throughout the puzzles on each level of the worlds. One of the main features of this game that is extremely useful that I wish other puzzle games would have is a rewind function. After pushing a block or spawning an illusion and you feel like you've messed up you can easily rewind that action and continue. I like the fact you don't have to restart the entire level just because you messed up. However, as a result of this some of the levels are trial and error based, for example there are some levels need you to spawn a illusion right at the start of the level. So without prior knowledge of the level or extremely good planning before taking action in the level you'll have to restart entirely there. As well as this, there is the occasional level that is extremely tedious and difficult to complete. For example, on level 5-4 you have to push a block at the bottom to get the block on the next level across and do that a few times to get through half the level. Maybe it's just me and my lack of ability to be half decent at puzzle games, but I restarted this level multiple times before seeing the solution. Kinda wish there was a hint or skip feature that you get after being on the level for X amount of time to avoid this. Despite this, there are some challenging levels that aren't as tedious and really make you think about your actions before you take them. And as all puzzle games should be like, in the later levels when you finish a puzzle you'll feel like a total genius afterwards.
Graphics
I'm a sucker for pixel graphics, and throughout the game there are a nice variety of different backgrounds and tile sets used to give a different kind of feeling in each world that you go through. Especially love the character that you play as, although the detail on her is kinda plain it fits with the background.
Pros
+ Nice cut scenes that explains the story in a short amount of time + Great mechanics throughout the game that expand + Rewind feature that lets you reset the last turn + Few but challenging puzzles + Great little pixel graphics + Little touches like in world 1 if you stand still for a few seconds then a bird lands on your head and stays there till you move
Cons
- Some puzzles need you to plan at the start of the level, therefor needing a complete restart - No rewind ability in tutorial levels for some reason - If on a conveyor belt and use rewind, you'll rewind but die afterwards (bug) - Occasional tedious level (5-4)
Closing Thoughts
If you're looking for fairly casual puzzle game then this is for you. Some great varied pixel graphics along with a decent variety of mechanics that'll always keep you thinking. A fine little story to keep you interested, though some tedious levels here and there, there is a decent amount of puzzles to keep you occupied for about 6 - 8 hours. Would recommenced grabbing this if you can. 我是个弱智,我1-2都过不去
The level design is very smart. If you are a puzzle game fan, you will be amazed by this game. Every level with different puzzle theme, It gets harder and harder. You have to think about how light world and dark world effect each other to solve those puzzles. People may critic that the story line is kinda weak, but Who need story when solving puzzles. If you get stuck on some level, dont worry , I made a video how you get pass every level with all purple crystals. https://youtu.be/A2EQiDx2WEc
